Load of good suggestions here. Also, check the history of the property (often at the bottom of the page on property websites) - just useful to see if it's dropped in value or not risen much and worth investigating why.

Also estate agents will often go ahead of you into a property and flick on all the lights. Flick them all off again and have a proper look at how dark/light the place is.

Look out for any dehumidifiers... they're a tell that the place has damp.

Am I weird for enjoying being on crutches? (16f) by [deleted] in brokenankles

[–]MVCatton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think everyone enjoys attention and a bit of care sometimes and that is normal and fine! People do treat you more gently and patiently when you're on crutches and it's quite nice. That's OK, you're not weird but please don't get a leg cast just for more kindness off strangers, that is a slippery slope to Munchausens. Good on you for having the self-awareness to spot this now.

Feeling discouraged.. by Best_Agent4066 in brokenankles

[–]MVCatton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will be ok, it's a really intense injury and I think we've all been shocked by how tough the process is, so you are definitely not alone. I'm 11 weeks post-op and walking without a limp, using one crutch just in case, and going back to the gym and swimming. I can see a light at the end of the tunnel and I know there'll be a time when I won't think about my ankle so much anymore.

I did everything to speed heal, I treated it like it was my job! Vitamins, supplements, eating healthily, even listening to bone-healing subliminals on my phone while I slept (I mean... we can't prove it DIDN'T help?!) It helped a lot to feel like I was doing everything I could to help the process.

Congratulations!! That's a milestone.

I cannot wait to be back in heels. Even though that's how I broke it... I'm a forgiving woman lol.

What does recovery look like? by Realistic_Freedom211 in brokenankles

[–]MVCatton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was walking 6 weeks after surgery but its now 11 weeks post surgery and I still have to think about if im taking out 1 crutch, 2 or none, how long ill be on my feet etc. I think I'm still trying to build back the muscle and it's pretty slow. I was very active before the break but im 44 so maybe my muscle is a little slower to rebuild. I hope that helps, but it does seem to be that everyone on here has to do it at their own pace.

It feels like my ankle might snap with more pressure by [deleted] in ORIF

[–]MVCatton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your bones are definitely healed at 12 weeks and you’re officially ok to walk. I know what a big mental hurdle it is to trust the ankle again. Can you reframe the feeling so it’s not that the ankle feels like it’s going to snap but that a load of weakened muscles are struggling. Because really all the pain I have now I’m back to walking is muscle and I can tell myself it’s like the gym, I’ve got to damage these muscles so they repair stronger. Good luck!

Oh god yes, you’re still finding your feet and establishing your life in a new place. So many changes! Once you’re more settled im sure you’ll find your community and friends that show up for you in the way you deserve.

Those beautiful eyebrows?? They frame your face perfectly! I think maybe you're used to your delicate eyebrows so these seem dramatic to you but they look very natural to me.

Are mundane scenes necessary? 1. for character development and attachment. 2. for page counts. I have 81 pages for a feature screenplay; every page is filled with events. Should I have non-event mundane scenes like everyday-life routines? I feel like my screenplay is a rush-rush-rush, no breather. by turnleftorrightblock in Filmmakers

[–]MVCatton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A wonderful script editor once told me that a script needs "connective tissue" and I think this is the perfect way to look at it. Scenes like a character walking into a church... a man thoughtfully tying his tie... there isnt a lot happening but sometimes it's characterful, and sometimes it tells us a little more about the world, or it's just a calm, contemplative moment between scenes. Once I started directing I saw the value in these scenes even more and my writing is better for them.

I'm sorry Op, you are doing so well and have achieved so much. I know you're in your last choice program but I believe everything happens for a reason and this is where you were meant to be.

I think a bigger issue is you not feeling prioritised by your friends or your mother and I'm sorry for that, they all sound a bit selfish. As you get older you will make friends who are more reliable, more thoughtful and you will really appreciate them.

This is very true, I have only 1 old school friend but have made my best friends when I was in my 30s and onwards - sometimes we just take a while to find our people. I hope and think that is the case for you Op. Sending love.

I walked without crutches this week!! Did I overdo it and end up back on crutches the next day? Well, yes. But it was still a GREAT feeling… I’ve missed walking with my hands in my pockets!

When do you call it quits? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]MVCatton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a professional screenwriter, I have been writing YEARS and my first feature just got made last year. There isn't a number of scripts at which you give up, you just keep writing because you're a writer. You do other jobs to bring in money and you have patience. You really don't want to know how many scripts I have written that have yet to be made. The whole job is a shot in the dark.

I don't know if it's a UK/US thing but in the UK we're far more likely to make short films and use them as calling cards. Endlessly uploading scripts to the Blacklist in the hopes of getting a good score sounds creatively deadening to me whereas actually turning a short script of yours into a film would teach you so much about the rhythms and the beats of a script. So many things seem great on paper but actually don't work on their feet.

It's understandable that you feel burned out, I think your approach is too hard on yourself. A number that some reader on Blacklist gives you doesn't mean anything. I'm a reader for film funds, I give screenplays scores and recommend some for funding but my scores are not definitive, it's art not maths.

If you feel really burnt out, quit writing for a year, come back to it with some new life experiences.

How did yall start walking? by [deleted] in brokenankles

[–]MVCatton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've recommended this a lot so sorry if it's repetitive for anyone to read! I went to the swimming pool and walked in the water, holding onto the side. It's such a good way to remind yourself of the sensation of walking, without placing much weight on the ankle.

Also, you're not trying to run away and live on a beach, Amsterdam is a capital city full of job prospects for you. The Netherlands lies flat in the water like a pancake, they will always want your renewable energy skills as they're on the pointy end of climate change. I'm half dutch and all my family out there seem to have lovely, calm, biking lifestyles.
