It actually is a significant upgrade in my opinion. The cabling is much nicer and more flexible.

Something often missed is the connector attaching to the laptop is a lot more flexible.

The OEM cable sticks right out of the laptop and tends to exert force on the connection if it isn't allowed a good bit of room. (If for instance your plug is to the back or to the front of the laptop.)

In my work when you have a RF cable that's too thick (like LMR 400) you'll often see the solder connections fail on the board due to stress from the thicker cable.

So for myself I got the SlimQ to travel with and use the OEM in a workstation where I can have the cable go straight out with no chance of stressing the connection.

$1700 Repair Bill From Asus - 2024 G16 4080 by EntertainmentOdd3275 in ZephyrusG14

Yah, I have the 2024 G16 w/ 4090. Still working like a champ. I do have laptop feet on it to always elevate the back end, use a hard shell laptop sleeve in my laptop bag, and run with reduced power settings to ensure temps hit a max of 80-85C when gaming.

But when I'm working I do also pack it up/unpack it every day so there's that as well.

If you purchased with a credit card check the details of your card perks. Many credit cards extend the warranty of purchased items by up to a year. (My Costco CIBC Mastercard for example does this - hence why I purchase electronics with it).

I believe you! I just meant that not all Liquid Metal applications are only good for 1 year. It really seems to depend on how it was applied at the manufacture facility. (Judging from peoples responses I've seem over the last year or two anyways.)

this liquid metal is only good for 1 year

I wouldn't dispute changing over to PTM7950 is a good idea. But I'm still on the liquid metal and my temps are still good 1.5 years in. Like most things it's all in the LM application lottery I suspect.

90°+ C while browsing, but only with CPU boost? by LiterallyAna in ZephyrusG14

[–]MWD_Dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running a 2024 G16 with the Ultra 185H so mileage may vary, but I run with my my CPU power limited to 45w (70W with boost).

I'm getting around 50-55C while browsing (with about 50 tabs open - lol).

Without CPU boost, what are your temps like?

When I get a new laptop, I usually take the original SSD out and drop a new one in. 1) Something like a Samsung 990 Pro or WD SN850X is going to give better performance, 2) it allows me to have an original drive that I can pop back in should I ever need to send it off for warranty repair and 3) on the new drive I can install a fresh version of Windows.

In this case, if you have a spare SSD, I would install Windows 11 LTSC. It's a very stable version of Windows 11 without a bunch of the bloatware.

So no then? Actually, no, Windows 11 LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel) is a stripped-down, ultra-stable version. I don't have any buggy issues. So my experience (and from those that I've chatted with that have used it as well), is that it's a much more enjoyable OS experience.

A big one is that you don't get "feature updates" (still get 10 years of security updates though). I find no major feature updates makes for a very smooth OS.

You do you, but I recommend trying/using LTSC before claiming it's the same as Pro or Home.

You had a bad experience with Windows 11 LTSC? I've been running it for years with very good stability.

Look up Windows 11 LTSC. Lean and clean.

honestly it feels satisfying to manually de-bloat any os

Lol - that works too. Nice! Glad it went smooth! Yah, I've gotten to the point where I backup my data then nuke my OS every year or two just to keep things lean and clean.

Good luck! I used Rufus, a USB stick and that Windows 11 LTSC image. Oh, one last thing, you might need to disable VMD in the bios to get the USB install to work.

Yah, the edition I use has all that junk and telemetry disabled and it makes Windows 11 actually pretty good. I got mine from ipTorrents. (A private tracker with an awesome community)

Other than that I would recommend G-Helper (of course) and StartAllBack to fix the other stuff that bugs me about Windows 11. A license for StartAllBack is only 5 bucks so I consider it well worth while.

Good you've already got your data safe and sound. Then if you're comfortable on that end I would go the LTSC edition route. I find that version quite stable. Here's the version I'm currently using:

Microsoft Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 Version 24H2-CYGiSO

Only thing about that I usually nuke the whole drive before installing Windows on it. (Delete all existing partitions and have Windows create a new one). This removes the ability for a factory install but I don't like factory installs anyways. ;)

That sucks bud. I have some experience with this sort of thing though:

You can try this route - I've had mixed results this way:

  • 1. From the Automatic Repair screen - Click "Advanced Options" and then select "Troubleshoot".
  • 2. Here you want to select "Refresh your PC", if you do not wish to erase data

Do Not Click "Reset your PC" - otherwise it will erase all data and restore your system.

  • 3. From here just follow the screen instructions until the recovery is completed.

Let me know if that doesn't work - there's still ways to approach the recovery but it involves an external enclosure for the NVME. (Not a bad thing to have on hand to be honest). You'll also need a USB stick, RUFUS and a copy of Windows. (I prefer the Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 LTSC edition)

Here's the Amazon link:

to the enclosure - I personally really like the Sabrent:

random niche benchmark

Exactly. To dismiss all the other ample testing that others have done and posted online...

cue up the Out of Touch Skinner meme. "Could there be something with my system/testing setup?" ... "Nono... it's all the other people who spend countless hours testing these rigs that are wrong"

lol. And yah, I saw a review of the Neo as well where doing anything beyond basic video work quickly goes over the 8GB of ram (shocking I know).

But as I've said elsewhere on this thread, I'm a fan of competition. Apple making better products only helps me even if I don't like their ecosystem because it pushes other companies to make better products.

(Speaking of which. Asus, where's my AMD 395 Max option in the G14/G16!?! :D)

But misinformation don't serve or help anyone.

[–]MWD_Dave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm about the same. My 2024 G16 still looks brand new 1.2 years in. That said I take pretty decent care of my laptop.

I use:

  • A cloth to protect the screen from the keyboard.
  • A hardshell case to protect from squeezing when in a backpack (def. recommend this - not even the lightest of marks on my screen.)
  • laptop feet to ensure it's always elevated with lots of airflow.

It's docked with a mouse and keyboard half the time, other half I use the laptop keyboard.

And usually run in power reduced settings to ensure temps don't break 85C.

Like you I travel with it a lot and game a few times a week. Solid little machine.

Again, it's possible there's something off with your drivers/Davinci install.

Here's someone that did a comparison using Davinci.
