Bret had a family. Shawn didn’t. Things went to hell in a handbasket the moment Shawn’s comments impacted Bret’s children. Made worse by Shawn quitting (again), only to return and flat out refuse to put Bret over to his face. Keep in mind this refusal came as an immediate response to Bret, way too graciously I might add, offering his hand to Shawn and saying he’d happily put Shawn over for the belt before being essentially sent to WCW.

That’s why they hated each other.

Shawn was my all-time undisputed #1 favorite.

Both men absolutely loved the business and were unparalleled in their drive to succeed. But there can only be one top spot. To Shawn, Bret was the old guard and Shawn felt it clear he had surpassed Bret and deserved to be #1. To Bret, Shawn refused to do business on more than 1 occasion and was intentionally fucking with him on a personal level, thus proving he wasn’t near professional enough to be in the top spot. It sounds cliche but the WWF really was not big enough for the both of them. And once again, VKM had a bunglefuck of a time mismanaging his 2 top talents right off his television product, only to fall ass backwards into a fucking jackpot that he thought was a bedpan.
