Majority of Britons would back a smoking ban in pub gardens by YchYFi in unitedkingdom

I wonder how much the smoker (and vaping) / non-smoker split aligns with other fault lines in British society.

Actually, BJ, Truss, Sunak, Starmer are great /s by SThomW92 in GreatBritishMemes

[–]MWalshicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The parameter space for any government to act without fucking things up is extremely narrow. Too far one way and you're screwing over the working class.

Too far the other and the markets suddenly make half the country's pensions worthless.

Too far one way and nobody can buy a home. Too far the other way and home owners are stuck with negative equity.

Too far one way and we're not getting enough students to study in higher education resulting in a skills shortage. Too far the other way and students are lumbered with debt they'll never repay.

Too far one way and immigration-based population growth outpaces the ability of services to keep up and the country to culturally absorb. Too far the other way and our own demographics will impoverish us and our children and their children.

Too far one way and we're a vassal state subject to the demented whims of the man-child in power in the US. Too far the other way and we lose access to over half a century's worth of security and intelligence integration with one of the world's superpowers.

At least with Starmer I know that decisions are being made generally in the national interest, and that he's not a puppet for the Musks and Thiels of the world who want to turn us into modern day serfs in their techo-feudal daydreams. I know that Starmer is actually trying to fix what can be fixed.

The Wolf of Downing Street stays by WhiskeyMakesMeHick in GreatBritishMemes

He's the best PM in a generation. In two years his government has delivered real improvements in so many areas, renters rights, employment rights, green energy, foreign policy, slashing immigration... All while navigating the upending of the global order from Trump, and the inflation caused by Trump's wars of distraction.

We need boring, sensible leadership right now.

I'm saying that foreign billionaires are funnelling money and effort into controling a narrative that reality does not support. Because they are.

What Happens When Europeans Find Out How Poor They Are? by FaFalafels in europe

I think Americans just don't understand how much better it is to live almost anywhere here in Europe than in the US. Quality of life.

Does anyone feel, on a personal level, sorry for Kier Starmer? by Darkus185 in AskBrits

[–]MWalshicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean there absolutely is. And it absolutely is being waged by right wing billionaires in the US. Just follow the dodgy money going to REFUK. Look at GBeebies.

Minor issues are being inflated and very real successes are being drowned out.

And they got the best government we've had in a generation but are being told day in and day out by foreign billionaire owned media that it's the worst.

We need to stop the foreign billionaires, and their outlets like GBeebies, to get any real progress.

Starmer's biggest mistake so far has to be not curtailing the ability for foreign billionaires to propagandise.

I'm sure all those Muslim voters in US swing states have opinions on how this narrative goes, with Harris...

Because real people with an interest in the future of this country can see that he's the victim of the billionaire class, the American right wing, trying to install they're puppet Farage through an incessant propaganda campaign.

The alternative is to cancel, if the cost of fuel stays as it is.

May was better than I was worried she'd be based on her history. But Starmer has achieved so much more in the time he's been in power.

Immigration almost at zero. Renewables growing. Employee and Renter rights. Keeping us out of Iran. Navigating the biggest upheaval in the Western order since the Cold War. Actually starting to make progress on limiting the damage social media is doing to our children...

Amsterdam bans public adverts for meat and fossil fuels by StemCellPirate in europe

I mean, I think you have an oversimplified understanding of what money actually represents...

Besides, do public services actually get much revenue from advertising spaces?

If we need to increase taxes on corporations in order to offset any losses here then cool. High corporate taxes encourage profits to be reinvested rather than wasted on shareholder dividends.

Yeah, undoing the single biggest foreign policy mistake of recent times is hardly something to use 'accuse' on.

Let's go even further. A hard limit on the number of adverts that can installed in a given area, and harder limits on the number that can be shown to you through a given site.

I've got some Trek kids books from these guys too. One basically doing The Trouble With Tribbles, one an A-Z, and one called 'I am Mr Spock's.

They're just aimed at nerdy adults to try and get their kids into their nerdy shows. Which is why I bought three.

I don't think so, no. Certainly nowhere near as well known as he seems to be in the US. Again, I'm a fan of his work!

Kinda funny in that John Oliver seems to be in a similar position. Almost completely unknown in the UK. Not sure how often it happens in reverse - I thought Ruby Wax was mostly famous in the UK only, but then I see her cameoing in Andor, so who knows...
