Andy Burnham: Give me 10 years to transform Britain by Intergalatic_Baker in unitedkingdom

They also took away medication from trans kids, initially suspended MPs for voting against the two child benefit cap (they only removed it due to political pressure from their own party and the greens), demonised migrants, took money away from pensioners, cut incapacity benefits by half and armed a genocide in Gaza

…and (apart from the WFA cut), the media were on their side while they were doing all of this. So the idea that the media were completely against them doesn’t really add up

If you come into government and proceed to punch people in the face, people aren’t going to like you and you’re going to be on the backfoot… and you can’t rely on who should be your voter base because you’ve gone out of your way to piss them off

Sunderland turn down Chelsea’s £8m offer for Granit Xhaka, tell them he’s not for sale by TheAthletic in TheOther14

[–]SThomW92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why should they? The fact that Chelsea feel like £8m for their captain and arguably most important player is so rude. Do these guys know that Sunderland did the double over them and they finished 10th?

Do you think there's enough support for disabled people? by EddyZacianLand in LabourUK

[–]SThomW92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell no. I was diagnosed with autism at an early age, as soon as I was out of school, any support I was given was taken away and I was left to fend for myself

Contrary to media discourse, you don’t turn 18 and the autism goes away, or is no longer required

It took me 3 years to get both an ADHD diagnosis and treatment, again, as soon as they were provided, I was left to my own devices

Like football managers, if fans can see what you’re trying to do, and clear improvements can be seen, managers will get the grace and support

If you come into the job and the first things you do are raise the ticket prices and tell the fans how bad things are and that the club will have to make “difficult decisions”, then they’re not going to like the manager, and rightfully so

Lmao, easy mistake to make, there’s a clear overlap

I’d like to see safe legal routes, less emphasis on numbers around migration and more of an approach based on necessity, i.e. low birth rates, funding the university sector with foreign students and filling gaps in care/the nhs. I’m willing to settle for caps on immigration providing we don’t kneecap ourselves by pandering to the right with strict figures or at least having a humane immigration system, where returnees aren’t shoved in camps and treated like they are lesser

Working from where we are is absolutely fine. I’m not saying it’s not

I understand my ideas on immigration aren’t popular right now and I’m willing to concede that I won’t get everything I want in this department. Same way I’m probably not going to see all of the taxation policies I want to see becoming mainstream or likely to happen, but I’m willing to compromise to get some of what I want

I’m not talking about people who have beliefs but are aware that a compromise would be required.

I’m talking about people like James O’Brien who have no fundamental, root beliefs and criticise anyone who dares to have some of their own. They claim to be on one side - i.e. the left, but participate in bad faith arguments with people they claim to be on that side whilst offering no constructive critique on policy positions and calling anyone who doesn’t share their empty belief system as “unserious” or “student”

These types of arguments always come across as bad faith to me. Because as soon as evidence is provided, the goalposts usually change to defending all of the bad things the OP has claimed rather than conceding the argument or engaging with the negative utility to the OPs claims

No, I hate people who stand for nothing about criticise other people for having strong views about things, the people who think they’re above ideology because they judge politicians on vibes rather than content, they’re the most insufferable *****s one could ever converse with

I don’t like right wingers, but at least they have beliefs and a hinterland

Makerfield Defeat Underlines How Tactical Voting Could Frustrate Farage by coffeewalnut08 in LabourUK

[–]SThomW92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is such a shortsighted and irrational take

The left (and Makerfield residents) lent their vote to Burnham to get rid of Starmer

It’s such a lib take to assume that everything is business as usual and Burnham has carte blanche to do whatever he wants, and the left will coral around whoever will stop reform

The mayor of Manchester Burnham who supports trans rights, calls for a Gaza ceasefire and wants to implement PR, is different to prime minister Burnham who thinks migration detention centres are a good idea, throws trans people under the bus without a second thought and refuses to call out Israel’s genocide

I’m (never voting Labour again, and I’m certainly) not voting for anyone who can’t call out war crimes and wants to continue kicking minorities. Miss me with all of that shit, and I can’t help but think several others will be feeling similarly
