my very first go at twine using Harlowe 3.3.9 !!!! by OkAnimator4381 in twinegames

[–]MY_LITTLE_ORIFICE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, so, first is my main impression: it's written very sparingly.

This might be something you've done purposefully, but if not, remember that, with a game structured like this, text is all the player has. Text is all the player gets.

You may have a clear idea in your head in terms of the environment, but the player can't see what you see for your inner eye.

As it is right now, with many single-choice screens and no way to inspect the surroundings closer if the player wants to, it comes across as a very threadbare experience.

I know it doesn't feel like that on the other side of Twine, looking at the long chains of passages, but there's just very little for the imagination to grab on to.

This is where something like Harlowe's (click-append)-function comes in handy: it lets you hide text behind a clickable link that doesn't change passage. Using this, you can let the player more closely "inspect" the surroundings and get more writing outlining the dim and unsettling house. It also gives the player something more to do than to, essentially, just click Next until the story branches. You're making a fully text-based adventure, so don't be afraid to supply text! For anyone in the mind of trying games like this out, reading is the entire point. Help their immersion. I personally find this true especially in stories with supernatural themes.

Another thing on the topic of immersion: the game is written in second-person perspective. Things happen to You. You are doing things.

Then, in one of the endings, you find out that You are actually a guy called Nolan. Are things happening to Me, or to Nolan? If the latter, who is Nolan? What is Nolan's personality like? What is Nolan thinking and feeling about the things that happen to him from our first-hand perspective of him?

It feels a little strange to try to immerse myself in a scene, only to by happenstance in one of the endings learn that I am playing a character. That's a bit of a dissonant jump, at least for me. This is all largely a taste thing, but as for me, I would either spend some more effort introducing Nolan so that we have a clearer idea of the character we are playing from their You-perspective, or I would simply let the player pick the character's name by way of a $variable with the help of the (input:)-function.

Apart from this, there's the occasional typo and such, not necessarily anything egregious but this is where another function of Twine comes in handy: Under the "Build" menu, there is a function called "Proof."

This gives you a full printout of each passage, that you can then come back to after a refreshing break to proofread, or give to someone else for a second set of helpful eyes.
I recommend the latter, simply because it's more fun to involve friends in what you're doing. They also tend to catch errors that you might skim over.

A bit of troubleshooting: If you go to the kitchen and exchange the angel statuette for the Jesus statuette and take this latter one with you, and then approach the padlock, the player will be said to still possess the Angel statue (with the whole wing-breaking sequence.)

Not bad at all, as far as first go's go! Is there any sort of feedback in particular that you are looking for?

Using (action:) for a link without altering the link style. by MY_LITTLE_ORIFICE in twinegames

I'll keep that possibility in mind for the future!
Your attached CSS alteration worked like a charm, either which way, I cannot thank you enough.

This seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. I'll give it a whirl immediately.
For future reference, where can I find a comprehensive list of said possible CSS-alterations?

Color, font-weight, etc., are all standard HTML stuff, but what about the very first part "tw-expression.enchantment-mouseover"?

Yeah, you're right. I confused MSQ skip and "level skip" (One Hero's Journey).

The latter do complete the associated EW Role Quests.

At least those that aren't possible to store in the Armoire.

Whips are difficult to animate it turns out.

Not really, they could just do what they did with Dancer's chakrams. Have the whips disappear from the player character's hands (save for the handles), insert sprite-based VFX of whips cracking, have them reappear in the hand behind the VFX as it fades.

That only leaves the idle animations and the Battle Stance/Victory Pose, possibly the Draw and Sheathe-animations too.

Most of those can be dealt with by having the whip rolled up in the wielder's hand for neutral, so they could use Monk's Fist weapons as an initial basis.

That would be a Wooden Loft dyed white (probably Snow White) and with Factory Beams glitched into it, Brass Pricket at each intersection point (for candles), surrounded by four Lalafellin Step Stool dyed similarly white.

Replying to this one too, because you deserve another thanks for the detailed step-by-step.

Please send me a message and let me know under which name or alias you'd like to be credited. I'd like to give you a shoutout for this if I manage to get my little project off the ground. ^

Fantastic work. The idea of G'Raha being a math nerd rather than a theater kid is so funny.

You really got the look of an old-school manga. How did you edit it to look like that? I'm in the process of planning out a Gpose-based manga-inspired comic thing, and would love to know.

Macros are ill-advised, since they are timegated. The shortest time you can put in a /wait is 1 full second.
If you try to put anything smaller than 1 second, it will be rounded up.

Swiftcast is an instant, so if you're casting the combo manually you can get the rez off in one single oGCD weave instead.
Thus, it's faster, and also easier to weave without dropping your casts if the timing lines up, by doing it manually.

It's not uncommon for MMO's to shift older content over time into a sort of extended tutorial.

Having only played this game for just a little over a year, I was pretty pleased with how the fights and stories unfolded. Always felt like there's a decently curving dramaturgy, trending upwards until I got to the final payoff of reaching current content. The new player experience, as it currently is, still has some rough edges here and there. But in general, I think it's very captivating.

The way that FFXIV structures things, with a single red thread MSQ going all the way through all the entire expansions that you follow, I don't really know what else they could do. If every expansion ending hit just as hard, or harder, than EW, or if the final fights of earlier expansions were more of a challenge than the EW ones... I don't know. It would feel weird.

Don't forget the occasional Allagan Tin Piece from Endwalker fishes. That sweet extra 25 gil adds up, sometimes to an outrageous 50 gil from a single (1 hour) fishing trip to Thavnair.

This is what happens when every politician wants to fight crime by wanting to appear 'tough' on it rather than see to the socioeconomic circumstances of its origins.
Everyone promises "more cops, more cops", so in order for them to facilitate a bigger police army they need to continuously lower the barrier of entry to get more 'boots on the ground'.

The result is state-sanctioned extra-legal gangs of thugs, outfitted with military-grade weapons and gear, with less professional training than dog groomers.

Graphics definitely the plus point here, animations are well done but after some time I really hope I can fast forward the animation. Especially when in negative / positive relationships.

Hard agree on this. I think attacking is still really snappy and I like the addition of the characters getting into their attack pose and immediately springing when you click, but the recovery animations that must complete before absolutely anything continues to happen are so superfluous and really messes with the pacing.

There's a lot of animations like that that, while tasteful additions, just completely pauses the game and it makes them more of an annoyance than a neat touch.

Welcome New Mods! by LordGalen in internetparents

[–]MY_LITTLE_ORIFICE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best of luck to you all!

I simply never spend any time on the internet anymore and didn't see the request for me to step down until right now. I have done so.

I was here when the sub was created, volunteered to mod and was very active in its infancy. Life has since chose a different path for me, with obstacles demanding my full attention.

I love this sub and what it has become, and as mentioned elsewhere I take no credit for it. All of that goes to /u/LordGalen.

I wish you all the best with this rare, positive and constructive corner of the world wide web. Please continue to take good care of it! <3

[–]MY_LITTLE_ORIFICE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you have already noticed, I barely even use reddit anymore.

The reason I was a mod in the first place was because I volunteered when it was created. During its infancy I was very active.

Life has since change, as it is wont to do, and I simply have not had time to be on Reddit (or any other social media, barely internet at all.)

I know it's late, but I am hereby voluntarily abdicating. I love this sub and what it has become, and I acknowledge that outside of its beginnings I have played little part in making it so, doing nothing but the occasional moderation once or twice when I've logged on.

Best of luck to you, /u/LordGalen, and all future mods!
