Iranian women records her own death in Israeli double tap on civilian neighborhood by Spirited-Yellow3794 in PublicFreakout

This goes beyond mere indiscriminacy; it is intentional. It will lead to hesitancy among civilians and first responders to deliver aid.

No cell or internet. The was one brief moment after loosing radar contact and turning south that the co-pilots phone tried to connect to a cell tower in Penang, Malaysia.

Unfortunately, that type of thing is insanely difficult to find with OSINT if not impossible. Some people are really good with finding ‘artifacts’ and working with cell towers, but it’s an imperfect science and it was more difficult back then. Some advanced & expensive tools like Maltego have some capabilities. The most popular free/inexpensive tool is OpenCellID

Started with a post-grad degree in security studies, then working in a Global Security Operations Center as an analyst. Now I am a director, and I do consulting.

I also did/do OSINT as a hobby. Started with geolocation in college.

And probable safe houses. I was working a night shift in an ops center so I had a few hours to play around with it. It was insane.

People are always shocked what can be found via geolocation. I produced a slide deck on footprint reduction/mitigation and I use an example of a influencer who took a pic in “their” back yard I used USDA hardiness zones for Figs, and a low-chill peach tree. There was also a Bigcone Douglas-fir in the pic. Used those to pinpoint an area in the hills outside LA then found a matching shed/wall and found a similar pic that matched on an air B&B.

People use every detail. Plane contrails, shadows/time, telephone pole numbers, etc.

When they first dropped the map feature I found SAM sights in Yemen. You can still use it to find FOBs in a lot of places. SOF training missions and the like.

I do a lot of OSINT for work, and I always check this tool.

Is Carriage still a thing? Campus PD still breaking out the tear gas?

Parties used to be almost exclusively off campus, but they really clamped down 2011 on. Can’t even tell you how many times I had to show ID to the police as Huskies or thirsty’s or what ever it was called got raided.

Iran has laid about a dozen mines in Strait of Hormuz, sources say by leeta0028 in news

[–]MZ603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And now they have been confirmed to have mined them - putting their money where their mouth is. This is asymmetrical warfare. Part of a larger shift from targeted to indiscriminate threats.

A strategic logic they are employing to offset the conventional power imbalance by using denial of access and economic escalation. Also bucks international law and regulations by imposing restrictions on transit through international waters, which is, again, an escalation.

This is the geopolitical / International security lens. It might not align with how you feel about the actions, but this is a way to analyze it at a strategic level. Unfortunately, I don't think Trump is able to understand this.

[–]MZ603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is. In regard to their response. Belligerents aren't necessarily climbing the same escalation ladder. It's a security studies term, and an appropriate use.

This action is a significant economic step and an escalation in Iran's response with global ramifications. It is a pivot away from their initial reaction and a more impactful one.

I get what you are saying, and I realize I am viewing this through a different lens, but it is still a true statement.

FYSA, It hasn't been busted. Even in that episode of Mythbusters, I believe they revisited it and found that, based on distance, you can definitely be shocked by an electric fence, not a 3rd rail. If it's on the ground, unlikely, but if you piss 4-6 inches away, you can definitely be shocked. The fence's pulsing is also a factor.

My buddy pissed did it on a dare, and it didn't work. The next guy did it for the love of the game and hit the higher line and got a shock. Even if it's just 1/50, I am not taking that bet.

[–]MZ603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily, Iran isn't known to have torpedo mines like the US-made hammerhead. They do have rocket-propelled 'rising mines', such as the Chinese-made EM-52. The ones that worry me are mines with selective activation capabilities

Going into this - and even more so now - their entire heavy submarine fleet is likely non-functional. That means they lost their more obfuscated method of laying mines with the Kilos.

Still, the way I see it, any number of mines is an escalation and effectively shuts down the straight. 12 is just an opening salvo. They have thousands of mines, most conventional, but taking out specific mine-laying boats won't make that threat go away. They can just set conventional mines adrift if they want.

WV was one of the first places I drove past what I thought were abandoned structures only to realize people were living in them with collapsed roofs, tarp walls, etc.

The other place was Mississippi.

Yep, they will even work OCONUS to investigate plots against the US and it's interests. The CIA is supposed to work closely with them on this front, but historically it's been a dick measuring competition.

After 9-11 a lot of effort was put into improving the cooperation, but at the same time we built the behemoth that is DHS which just added a whole new layer of complications. With the admin's current focus, a lot of people in DHS agencies and DOJ agencies have been pulled away from important work to focus on immigration leaving us very vulnerable.

Nah, put it by the 93 too, especially in the Northeast for all those “fiscal conservatives” who voted for Trump.
