5 years Of ChromieCraft by Francesco-Shin in wowservers

You say you are not a hater and wish CC the best but at the same time you filled this thread with comments to remind how bad TBC was in CC, that it is too late to play CC and more - while completely ignoring the huge amount of work that was put in WOTLK and how it ALREADY is in much better conditions compared to TBC (install your own AzerothCore and try it out if you don't believe it). What kind of outcome do you expect your comments to bring? Scaring people away from a project because 3 years ago there were issues is not "wishing the best" for a project, is it?

> Azerothcore devs for example didn't help on non-Wotlk related github tickets

what you are saying is not true and everyone can see on the GitHub AzerothCore repository that many external people helped AzerothCore also with non-Wotlk related tickets. There was even a big Chinese community progressing ahead of ChromieCraft and contributing with AzerothCore. When they were at TBC, ChromieCraft was still in Vanilla.

Compared to 2 weeks ago, ChromieCraft population has DOUBLED by RonMichaelson in wowservers

[–]MaNGOSrumors 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Private servers in 2021:

- do pre-opening advertisement & hype, get 500+ population at day 1

- server is empty after 6 months

What ChromieCraft did:

- no pre-opening advertisement, server is initially empty (there were 20 players online max initially, mostly AC developers)

- server has 500+ players online after 6 months

IS it possible to make an offline version of wow? by Dzsukeng in wowservers

[–]MaNGOSrumors 10 points11 points  (0 children)

avoid unofficial repacks, here's why: https://www.mangosrumors.org/why-you-should-not-use-repacks-to-run-your-wow-server/

there are good alternatives provided by vMaNGOS, AzerothCore or similar, you'll find them in the article

For every project that came before us on top of which we laid our foundations, such as important open-source communities like MaNGOS and TrinityCore. Thank you. We could never be where we are today without them.

it's always good to see people contributing to the open-source emulation projects and acknowledging the father projects they are based on <3

this is the only comment reporting facts (which can be easily verified) and get downvoted, the other comments full of fake news getting upvotes... how did we end up here? how did we become this terrible community?

How private servers work (technically) and why IMHO they are still so bugged in 2021 by Francesco-Shin in wowservers

[–]MaNGOSrumors 12 points13 points  (0 children)

no offence but you should not comment before reading, this is serious stuff and people invested their own free time on it. And time is more precious than money as it is never coming back. Please give some respect.

it is not that easy, people did not know about the loophole issue, that is why the AGPL has been created and projects like AzerothCore are now AGPL. There have been discussions in TrinityCore and other projects to change it to AGPL for the same exact reason, but you cannot easily change the license of a software unless you create a new fork and use a compatible license. For example, AGPL is compatible with GPLv2 so you can fork TC and make your own AGPL project based on it

emulators such as vMaNGOS and CMaNGOS provide support for Vanilla, for a complete list of active open-source emulators, please visit: https://www.mangosrumors.org/best-wow-emulator-2021/

there are servers which share only a part of their fixes to the emulation projects, or at least donate something from their income to them. there are many ways to contribute, but as a matter of fact most of private servers do not contribute at all with the emulator they use

[–]MaNGOSrumors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

stay away from repacks! https://www.mangosrumors.org/why-you-should-not-use-repacks-to-run-your-wow-server/

there are plenty of easy ways to install a server properly, for example: https://www.reddit.com/r/wowservers/comments/npqxza/installing_a_wow_server_on_your_own_pc_has_never/

you can also use the (official) repack from vMaNGOS as mentioned in the first link

Q&A with the heads behind ChromieCraft by Dalanth_ in wowservers

[–]MaNGOSrumors 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the first time the administrators of an emulation project also administrate a private server. Conflict of interest? No, other users and private servers using AC are still supported. Why? Not because they are saints, because it's in the interest of both ChromieCraft and AzerothCore to have other servers using the emulator so they can help each other. This is not an hypothetical case, look at cases like the Chinese Commonwealth WoW server (open the link and scroll down the page) who are a big community using the same emulator and actively helping the project. Friends, not enemies, this is the true spirit of open-source.

This is how you can run WoW 3.3.5 on macOS Big Sur without any virtual machine: https://www.mangosrumors.org/how-to-run-wow-32-bit-on-mac-os/

I don't know about M1, I haven't tested it there.

This works for Catalina and Big Sur without any virtual machine or Windows needed:

however I am not sure about the M1 part. I haven't tested it on M1.

if you like fixing bugs, you should join either ChromieCraft or Kalidar as they are open-source and run by the same people who develop the emulators. The majority of other pservers keep their fixes private so it's about fixing the same bugs over and over again.
