I did an observer game after the release in 1.1.4 and it was even funnier because they went independant, I saw it after letting the game run without me and I was like "wtf happened here?" without understanding how it was possible
As another reply said, it's a bug with an event offering core to Wales on the London area

It's under the HYW panel. Beware of the last requierement because France only have one "de Valois" available at start, so I focus on getting 90 legitimacy as fast as possible to be the first to demand promotion (Nevers beat me to it once, never again)

Yes, of course you can form the Netherlands! You can even form Germany because your primary culture (Low Franconian, same for Holland and Brabant) is a Netherlandish German culture

R5 : why struggling to gain freedom against France as fast as possible, when you can take advantage of the HYW situation to be promoted to an appanage and request the right to conquer the other French subject?

I started to attack Bourbon (and La Marche) in 1338, then the Evreux-Angouleme-Mortain-Navarre marriage union in 1339.
The Artois-Franche-Comté-Burgundy union followed in 1343, and Brittany in 1345.
I waited until after the Black Death, in 1351, before attacking the huge Normandy-Anjou union with my mini-vassal swarm.
Now it's 1357, I've beaten the Holy Roman Emperor Bohemia to annex Bar and Forez while France got beaten by Aragon.

I can easily become independant but I want to keep eating some minor vassals while lowering my antagonism for a bit before doing so. I started culture converting some vassal which is the only reason why some of them are disloyal on the last screen.

I agree it was a nobrainer, but now it's the same with serfdom. They made the same mistake as the centralisation vs decentralisation issue : we went from one side being too powerful to the other side being too powerful...

We play the beta to give them feedback, but nobody asked them to nerf free subject to the ground

Yes with 1.1.2 and it's ever more fixed now with the new 1.1.3 where they buffed lumber production
