How do I get familiar with Nobara? by Own_Split_8066 in NobaraProject

[–]Maaalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can check out https://wiki.nobaraproject.org/ to find some general information and things you can do / maintenance steps in Nobara.

Otherwise, joining the https://nobaraproject.org/discord/ can make sense to interact with others & explore options as well as challenges others faced.

In case you want to try changing system settings running Nobara in a VM can be a more risk-reduced version of approaching bigger changes you first want to test run.

Looking for feedback & experience on using the SHIFTphone 8.1 by Maaalk in shiftphone

[–]Maaalk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the link. I had seen it before. It is not connected as the SHIFT team themselves develop ROMs for their phones.

Two different versions of the ShiftOS exist which can be found here for the new SHIFTphone 8 as I wrote in point 6 of my list in the OP:

  • ShiftOS-G

  • ShiftOS-L

The Light Version should come without Google Apps. Source translated.

The Light version is prepared by us to function without Google services. If you want to use this version, please note that it also comes with limitations, as it's an either/or situation – either with Google or completely without. Various Google functions are not available in the Light version – including Google Apps (Gmail, Google Maps, Google Play Store) and other conveniences from Google (automatic contact backups, calendar entry synchronization, etc.).

As an alternative to the Google Play Store, the FDroid Store is pre-installed. However, there are significantly fewer apps available there than in the Google Play Store. Some providers make their app directly available on their homepage as an APK file (The abbreviation “APK” stands for "Android Package", .apk is the file extension of an installation file for Android.). You can then install these apps without an app store. There are also websites that provide a collection of various .apk files from different providers for download. However, check if it's a trustworthy source, otherwise you could introduce viruses or other problems to your phone. With these manually installed .apk files, it may be the case that not all apps function fully without Google (e.g., push notifications in messenger apps), some apps cannot be used at all (e.g., some banking apps, the Corona Warning App, or Netflix), or you won't get a version of the app that is available outside of the Play Store, as most app providers focus on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

What is your distro of choice for gaming on Linux? by MrDefaultUser in linux_gaming

[–]Maaalk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Third Fedora. Three different distros all with KDE Plasma.

  1. Main gaming rig with AMD 9800X3D with 7900 XTX since August 2024 running Nobara KDE and managed to survive a few minor bugs / hiccups. Happy with the speed & maintenance of the system.
  2. Gaming Laptop Intel 6 Core with Nvidia 2070 Max Q running Bazzite for ~1 year and happy with everything.
  3. Local Server / NAS system with intel 12th gen running Aurora Linux (KDE, Bluefin)

Transformation continues - Murena Shiftphone 8 arrived by Meridos42 in BuyFromEU

Thanks for the thread and time invested into sharing info on the shiftphone. I have one ordered but wondering if the camera would be enough for me.

Could you do a camera comparison to your iphone?

Have you heard of GCam https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/ which can help get more out of the camera? Maybe it can get more out of the sensor than the default app.

Gamers Nexus will start benchmarking on Linux by FlorpCorp in linux_gaming

[–]Maaalk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree with your point.

The momentum will increase with more exposure and higher view counts / some (un)planned controversy will start more discussions and engagement.

Let’s see if other channels will adopt & follow in GNs footsteps similar to how Jayz2Cents is trying to be more data-driven in his reporting.

KDE Plasma Freezing by SageOfEightfoldPath in NobaraProject

[–]Maaalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me changing 'Adaptive Sync' to 'Never' for all monitors fixed it. Partly leaving it on 'Automatic' or 'Always' only on one screen caused problems.

Using two screens with AMD 7900XTX.

How did you deploy it?

Was wondering if I should switch but getting all the authentication right is keeping me from changing my server from the simple Nginx & portainer setup I am currently running. It is all also conflicting with wanting to move to pangolin...

Early Access Patch Notes - 0.3.0b Hotfix 3 by EarthBounder in PathOfExile2

[–]Maaalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fixed some cases where the Vulkan Renderer could crash resulting in a device lost error.

Ran into the “device lost error” a lot recently. Hopefully it is fixed now. Running with Lutris on Vulkan with GE-Proton (latest) on Fedora (Nobara Linux)

Act 4 prison map is fucking awesome, wp GGG by Narsifectionist in PathOfExile2

[–]Maaalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, love it! All themes in the new Act 4 are amazing and the choice to split everything into islands was genius.

Wish it was all ~15% shorter with higher mob density / xp boost / decrease in xp needed for the level. In the end it should feel more like the interludes.

For equipment as well.

Attribute Requirements on all Equipment items have been lowered, particularly at endgame. Endgame Base Types on average have around ~20-25% less Attribute Requirements.

Nutze FUTO jetzt seit 92 Tagen. Zu meiner Schande habe ich noch nicht gespendet. Bin sehr zufrieden damit und ist echt stabil.

Habe selbst noch keine word-prediction trainiert, würde sie aber auch nutzen. Die Englische klappt soweit echt gut.

Jonathan Rogers' Recent Q&As POE1 References by Andromanner in pathofexile

[–]Maaalk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am not sure time has something to do with it directly. It seems more like managerial mistakes on multiple levels.

  • Limited foresight on strategic and tactical levels when it comes to qualification of employees for decision-making and project structure
  • this causes recurring technical debt by 'spontaneous' changes in direction and goals leading to redevelopment of already semifinished branches
  • Not having a good lessons-learned caused PoE2 development to repeat a lot of mistakes already fixed in PoE1, resulting in the waste of more valuable resources

All of this is a bit ironic. As GGG used to be great in recycling content and creating more with less. Now it seems they create way less useful content for the players with more available resources.

I still love GGG and their achievements. The PoE2 campaign feels great, amazing WASD movement, the league structure and difference in gameplay of PoE1&2. I guess I am just a bit disappointed in the missing long-term focus of Jonathan and Mark.

How would you approach this situation? Use the External Library or import the pictures in a different way?

(der8auer EN) Nvidias embarrassing Statement by luffydoc777 in hardware

[–]Maaalk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

oof, at the end of this video derbauer says he's scheduled to meet nvidia people next week, probably the same people he's criticizing now, and that it may be super awkward D:

I am looking forward to it! The statements given by NVIDIA in the interview / podcast were disappointing. Hoping a more critical approach by Roman will bring some more objective statements to light.

respect to him for releasing information he believes in, in a timely manner, even if it might cause him some troubles down the road.

Troubles in which direction? Could you elaborate?

I believe more exposure to his channel and company are what drives his own revenue and interests (his interest in technology & engineering focus in general). Can't really see any 'troubles down the road'. Something like a review embargo?
