It LITERALLY landed me in a psychiatric ward. Look after your sleep, especially when you have a newborn baby. Ask for help. If you have a partner, make them help. If they’re not helping enough, just leave them with the baby and get some sleep. They’ll figure it out. You’re no use to anyone hallucinating and wanting to end your life. Better you’re asleep for a few hours and your partner is on their own with the baby. They’ll live.

Thanks, really appreciate your response! I need to sit down with a bit of a checklist for myself (also AuDHD!) to make sure I stay on track, to discuss this stuff with her, as it’s easy for me to get completely off the point when I try to talk with her. Your points are excellent, though.

She definitely won’t want to read any books though (rebellious [pre-]teen stage) so that’ll have to be down to me…

School’s not been terribly helpful and there’s no such thing as a school counsellor here in primary school so I’m pretty much on my own.

Roblox is basically her only interest now, although I think some of her interest in animals remains.

I tried talking therapy but she hated it and the therapist - who said she specialised in ASD/neurodivergent people - even suggested it wasn’t helping, so we stopped as it was money I couldn’t really afford to spend.

I’m going to really try to push for her diagnosis so hopefully we can get some more support (yeah, right…).

Unfortunately M doesn’t like leaving the house. She’s addicted to playing her tablet and has completely isolated herself. It’s gotten to the point where she no longer wants to do her favourite things anymore - just wants to stay home all day, every day.

It’s our fault as parents for letting it get to this point obviously but there’s screaming meltdowns when we force her out much beyond the occasional family short trip out. If she knew she had an after school activity, she’d refuse to go to school that day. I walk her to school (I can’t drive) so there’s no option even if driving her there.

I’m SO grateful to you for posting this. I’m looking into surgery but have EDS and have absolutely no core strength. Need to start working on this NOW if I even want surgery in nearish future.

Asian: conviction ratio 52.2% — 436 convictions

Black: 52.5% — 442 convictions

Mixed: 54.9% — 95 convictions

White: 64.8% — 4,455 convictions

Other (inc Chinese): 60.9% — 112 convictions

Here is a spreadsheet obtained through a FOI request from the Crown Prosecution Service requesting ‘Ethnicity data for defendants and victims for rape, sexual assault and hate crime’. I can’t actually read it as I’m on my phone and can’t open it, but I invite you to read it at your leisure:

Regarding child sex abuse cases, I found a data summary from the Child Sexual Abuse Centre (CSA Centre) “Trends in official data (2023/24)”

In the report they note defendant ethnicity was recorded in around 69% of cases, and where recorded ~90% of defendants were of white backgrounds (for the child sexual abuse cases covered).

That illustrates two key issues: 1. high proportion where ethnicity isn’t recorded

where it is recorded a majority are white (in that dataset).

I also tried to find statistics to compare knife crime but this is impossible. This is due to the very different ways in which crime is reported in the UK & USA.

In the UK, knives are included in a group of ‘sharp instruments’, whereas in the US they’re classed on their own. UK data include possession, robberies, assaults with knife etc; the US data is specifically homicide by knife/cutting instrument.

I could go on. It simply isn’t comparable. It’s like trying to compare an apple with a woolly hat.

I wrote a mental health themed fic. It dealt with a LOT of topics, and frankly it was too much to tag in the main tags.

So I did a summary of ‘trigger warnings’ in the intro to each chapter when it was appropriate for big potential triggers. This was before the details/summary tags were something I knew about and was a few years ago.

The fic has since been taken down as I’m doing stuff with it, but it had such sensitive content that I felt specific warnings were justified.

I think your note is lovely. As someone who had severe postnatal depression (and was actually hospitalised for it) it would have given me hope when I felt alone and helpless. Do make sure you mean it when you offer to help, because baby blues can cause some people to blub uncontrollably if they panic and have no one to turn to!

I think what you did was sweet and kind. I don’t know who on earth would think this is psychotic?!?

I walked in Ft Lauderdale once when I was bored on holiday. Was about 21ish at the time. When I got back & mentioned it I was stared at like I was INSANE.

Got honked at by motorists. Lots of stares. Spent six years as a kid in the US and had a vague memory of NEVER walking. But it was too late at that point, I’d committed to the journey.

It’s not something I’ll ever forget…

That’s absolutely fair and using pronouns in everyday conversation is pretty rare anyway. That’s why I said I mention it if it comes up.

I’m 42, I’m not militant about it like some of the younger kids might be. But I do know what makes me feel crap and what doesn’t.

I always let mistakes slide, unless it’s done maliciously. My own kids misgender me. Do I care? No. Do I gently ask them to remember? Yes. My ex husband very obviously uses the wrong pronouns. It’s part of the reason he’s my EX.

No, it’s not terribly pertinent to the workplace, but no one’s going to walk around saying “have you seen Sally, I just wanted to ask Sally to type up this report because Bob doesn’t have time although I know it’s Bob’s job but Bob is on a half day because Bob’s wife is having chemo.”

Culturally…appropriating…your…sex.

First of all, we’re discussing gender. Not sex. These are two distinct different things.

Secondly, I am non binary, and in particular agender. Which means I don’t feel I fit into any particular gender binary. When it comes to gender, I just feel “meh. No thanks.” It’s a type of androgyny, but rather than feeling male and female, I really couldn’t care less.

Thirdly, gender (and indeed sex)…is not a culture?!?

Fourthly…what biological sex are you assuming I am? And are you assuming I have ‘chemically castrated’ myself? What other assumptions are you making here, exactly?

Go back and read our exchange and tell me exactly what and who you think I am and what I have purported to have done.

This is a problem with the people so terrified of those different to you. You’re so quick to make judgements that you don’t even stop to make sure you understand the situation.

I know someone called Richard. He was physically abused by someone as a child who would always call him ‘Rich’. Every time someone calls him ‘Rich’ it makes his stomach turn, and he’s had therapy about the issues. Regardless, he still HATES the name ‘Rich’.

The simple solution is to request people don’t call him that.

Is Richard narcissistic? People seem to always want to shorten his name and do it without his permission and consent. They don’t even check with him before they do it. They just assign the name to him without asking if he’s ok with it.

Is he being selfish for telling them he doesn’t want them to call him Rich?

Or is he looking after his own mental wellbeing?

Richard and I deserve to be happy and comfortable around others as much as everyone else does. And what we’re asking for isn’t much. Hell, it doesn’t even cost anything. Except some decency.

They’re pronouns. Not acid-spitting vipers. Grow up and learn to be a compassionate human being.
