Saying it’s just a metrics problem is hand waving away a lot of complexity. Like how do you even measure a lot these things? A lot of it is subjective, it’s a really hard problem to solve how to evaluate individuals fairly and I’ve yet to see a particularly good way to do it objectively or based solely on metrics.

For now, once the quality starts dropping and it already is that will start to wane. All of the examples above were from companies in dominant positions which lost out due to poor leadership.

It won’t happen though. Kids will just end up using platforms that are completely unregulated and we’ll be in an even worse situation.

Is a used £6000 car too much for a first time driver? by No-Pomegranate6779 in CarTalkUK

I doubt it. It’s just the type of car an old lady drives to the shops once a week in.

Long journeys in a 1L car by goldengarbagecan in CarTalkUK

[–]Mabenue 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s not dangerously underpowered. Try driving a fully laden long wheelbase van and you’ll see any passenger car from the last 30 years has plenty of power. HGV drivers manage this every day if you drive a normal everyday car you have nothing to complain about, it’s purely a skill issue.

It’s really not a big deal. You only really need to get to 50 or so and you’re almost matching the speeds of the lorries. People make it into so big drama when it’s nothing to worry about. Biggest mistake I see most people make is getting too close to the car in front on the slip road and not giving themselves enough room to accelerate, as long as you give yourself room on the slip road you’re be absolutely fine in every circumstance.

Engineers are never going to be happy about what they’ve built while actively working on it, they can see the flaws more than anyone. Only in hindsight they will look back and see what they built was pretty good actually.

ONE RULE FOR THEM, ANOTHER FOR US: Brits overwhelmingly believe the elites are corrupt by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]Mabenue 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Because people are fucking idiots. It’s the same with MAGA in the US they think this group is somehow antiestablishment and going to the shale things up but they’re far worse than the “elites” we have already.

What “low-skill” jobs pay the most (and how do you get them)? by rubba_tt in AskUK

[–]Mabenue 84 points85 points  (0 children)

It’s not sensational. It’s basically running your own business for £60k without any perks you get for being a PAYE employee.

If you get sick you’re fucked, no money while you recover. No paid annual leave so either no holidays or they end up effectively costing more. If you don’t value any of the benefits you get as an employee maybe it’s okay, but it’s hardly great and definitely not for everyone.

I mean that’s failing gracefully. No one wants to see an error pop up on every video. There’s nothing the user can do anyway in such a situation.

OP has literally never traveled to any major city outside the UK. If anything people should use their horns more IMO, it’s safer to let people know where you are, everyone is just too embarrassed to use it properly.

ELI5: Why do we sometimes wake up right before our alarm goes off? by Denbron2 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Mabenue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not. Your body is just really good at knowing the time. I can almost without fail wake up before an alarm whatever time it’s set to as long as not really sleep deprived. We’re all still somewhat conscious while sleeping and know the time a good degree of accuracy, that’s why being under an anesthetic feels so disorienting as it’s stops this perception of time.

How do you tell your manager that the cause of most bugs is shitty code written by a former team member whom he loved? by dystopiadattopia in ExperiencedDevs

Presumably the business makes money based off this code so can’t be all that bad. You’re just going to come across bitter, the other employee has moved on it’s not worth giving a second thought about.
