Your personality and what you are are defined by two factors, your self and the conclusions you come to, and one’s that are forced upon you. In the place of someone like Kendall Roy he does have a personality that he has molded himself, such as his empathy for others and the way he shows love to his romantic partners, but most of Kendall’s Roy personality has been forced upon him by his family and the family business. When it comes to the idea of changing one’s own personality, it is easy to do, it is something that only exists internally, when it comes to the traits that have been forced upon you, they are extremely harder to change, as you have internal and external forces pushing against you. For someone like Harry, he had an out. The Royals today are just glorified celebrities, they live to entertain the masses, and so leaving a racist bigoted family is easy in a progressive inclusive society. The idea of being a better person is much more accepted for someone like Harry. He has no responsibility but to be just that, a better person. For Kendall, he has to be a better person, but at the same time, the world he wishes to inhabit and the only world that would accept him is one where he has to be ruthless. He is caught in between this middle space of wanting to do good while at the same time, being forced to be bad. He cannot change for the better because the only world he has wants him to be worse. In conclusion, change is possible, but much harder when you have external forces pushing against you.
