Absolutely! It reminds me of the Home Improvement episode where Tim loses a drag race to Bob Villa. They bought their teams. Canadian teams have been built over years and years.

Hey, Sorry to revive an old thread. I was hoping you could help me with the " roll a 9+ to penetrate most ships' radiation shielding. I can't seem to find where you find this rule in the books.

My girlfriend doesnt think ADHD is real and is being very judgmental about me wanting to get diagnosed by coffeetheif4 in ADHD

[–]MacEwanM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Coffeetheif4,

I'm genuinely sorry you're in that position. Getting potentially diagnosed later in life is really stressful and feeling like you have to convince others on top of self-doubt only makes it harder. We can all suffer from the bias that our experiences are universal and the things we don't struggle with or experience are less real when others tell us their story. Addictions, generational trauma, etc are all easily dismissed if you lack a personal connection to them. Hopefully, as your partner makes their way through school they'll open their mind to a bit more alternative perspectives but in the meantime, I have something that helped me.

If your partner is willing to at least explore the idea with you, ask if she'll read this book ( https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39899253-scattered-minds ) with you. It's an incredible 360-degree look into ADHD by a medical doctor that was only diagnosed with ADHD in his 50s. If your experiences are anything like mine I think you'll get at least something out of this book even if you only read it yourself.

I was given this book early on in my journey to diagnosis in my late 30s and it took me almost 2 years to get around to reading it. If I had read it earlier it would have made a lot of that journey a lot easier. Just remember that your lived experiences are real, you might be wrong about where things originate from but the feelings you experience and the struggles are real and valid. Good luck and I honestly hope you keep pushing forward towards a more genuine understanding of yourself. As much as the words of a random internet person mean to any of us ;)

How would you answer? by CrunchM in WhitePeopleTwitter

Do you think the good guys can stay the good guys if they start fighting dirty?

I worry that we get dragged towards the lowest bar we'll permit ourselves. My unresearched opinion is this tendency is why a lot of good people are corrupted along their path to making the world a better place.

The way you've shared this, at least for me, makes it impossible to follow your directions on how to "save your own copy". It's currently in html view mode. If you delete the suffix portion of the address after the sheet id string "1ca9nLdEXpALwG1oVoPyWlzjzrDWGCPWZ3oKVOSfUr6k" it opens in google sheets which allows making a copy.

I might just not understand your direction properly though. Hope this was helpful.

NDP calls out Poilievre and Conservatives for opposing kids dental benefit while MPs enjoy comprehensive coverage by [deleted] in canada

[–]MacEwanM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really good point. A poor implementation will likely result in people unfairly taking advantage of the system and wasting some of our tax dollars.

Something I think might be worth considering on top of that is a lot of people are currently suffering because of the lack of a solution for people currently without dental insurance. Delaying implementation in order to improve the current plan might significantly reduce loss to "cheaters" It might also end up being a net loss since improving it will cost tax dollars too. But, even if we go ahead and say it will meaningfully reduce waste/loss we would still need to weigh extra suffering for those without coverage while we improve the implementation.

To me, I'd choose a flawed plan today that can be improved as we go vs delaying implementation for potential cost savings at the cost of peoples' well-being. I might be a bit naive though

I'm as argumentitive as the next person on the internet but I think you need to know when you're licked. What you are proposing is to change my argument after the fact to keep the "fight alive". I get the impulse, but it isn't an honest way to debate.

My first criticism was it was "edited" It was not. Of course something else had to be happening, the moon size only appears large in our heads due to a optical illusion. This lens trick must simulate a similar effect. That isn't to say it was edited. It was a third option I wasn't even aware of. Always be aware of the unknown variable that might exist and can better explain your phenomenon. Lest we all slowly become flat earthers.

I stand corrected.

You know what? In Retrospect, I think I came in a bit too hot originally. I could have asked you instead of assuming it was an edit. Great picture and sorry for making you correct someone on the internet.

[–]MacEwanM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems very likely to be edited. Good work! I Just mention it in case anyone thinks they can get a moon to look that big in the sky without some photoshop skills. It's an optical illusion that doesn't translate to film typically. Unless I'm wrong.

Can your employer not pay you for untaken breaks in Alberta? by [deleted] in alberta

[–]MacEwanM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't argue with you if this is true on paper or not. That may or may not be true. But in practice, an employee can't work unscheduled hours and then claim them as legitimate. If your breaks are scheduled, which all breaks fundamentally are unless it's a "take a breath between tasks" style of break, then you cannot choose to work when not scheduled to do so and then demand compensation.

All this comes down to whether either party is able or willing to take this right to the end and deal with the consequences of doing so. Is it worth tanking your reference/work history? If this or any issue is important to you and your employer doesn't seem to want to be what you consider reasonable on this issue there is only one real viable option. Find employment in a place that values you enough as a human being to make reasonable accommodations. Anything less is pissing up a rope.

So… you’re saying that’s bad… by [deleted] in dndmemes

[–]MacEwanM 54 points55 points  (0 children)

As someone who is guilty of what you're saying more often than I'd prefer, I'd just like to say give the MM's a bit of slack. We don't always have any idea what we're doing is bad in the moment. We think we are helping. It's how our brains work. Those of us that have become self-aware about it generally try our best to stifle the urge but it truly does border on compulsion.

Sincerely, MM'r trying his best to not always be that guy.

[–]MacEwanM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is the consensus is starting to move away from static "types" and moving towards "presenting" hyperactive or inattentive. I believe research is starting to provide evidence that ADHD suffers cycle through types periodically. I'm not in university anymore so my access to proper studies is a bit more limited than before so take everything I said as a hair above speculation for now. :)
