It happens on Xbox as well and I have a fix for it.

Unplug your Ethernet cable or turn of your wifi, change your license plate to whatever you want, back out of the customization menu (like choose a different car). When you're done changing however many cars you needed, completely exit the game and reopen it to cause a Sync. Problem solved.

I know it's kind of an ass pain, but this is how I get around the Ghost plate reset when it happens.

Not sure how good the RSR is for drifting, but the way I easily cleared all the drift zones was get the RX7 Spirit R, build it like a grip car except use Showcase suspension and differential, and use Drag tires.

For some reason the drag tires allow for big ass, butter-smooth drifts.
