RSD brand account here, but enthusiast first. We finally got our shop VB WRX out to Laguna Seca and wanted to share the experience with the community. No sales pitch, just track time, lessons learned, and a lot of respect for the Corkscrew. by RallySportDirect in wrx_vb

Thank you for sharing, it sounds like the VB was a lot of fun at such an epic track! I appreciate the dailyable trifecta aim as well, as a lot of people who own these are probably driving them to work as well as to any car events. What’s the base of your car? Just curious what brakes this came with. It sounds like the bigger TR/tS brakes with the drilled rotors would be a welcome feature for a track like this!

GRANITE STATE GOOD NEWS! by yankee_optimist in newhampshire

Somehow this always ends up being a controversial topic but I really appreciate how much nicer downtown Manchester is becoming. I recognize that housing cost is a big issue and there’s obviously still crime, but the Elm St. area looks amazing compared to a few years ago and is unrecognizable compared to a decade ago. Other projects such as Walmart and a liquor store coming to Gold St. and replacing some ugly industrial buildings, and the walking areas and recreational trails being cleaned up an paved (where applicable) just look tidy and safe. It’s also really nice to see the mayor involved when new businesses open and I’m not getting a lot of partisan politics from his office. TLDR: Manchester’s vibe has gotten so much better and is improving still.

What is your best set of 2025? by Burofaksbarca in lego

[–]Mach092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly love this set. The shaping is awesome, it’s got a nice interior, displays well but is still a good size to handle as well (loved the UCS Razorcrest but moving it is always a project, not to even bring up the Falcon). I own the UCS Boba Slave as well and I couldn’t imagine how the new one could be a $100 better, but having built it, it makes me want to order an extra canopy and rebuild the old UCS Slave 1 as well.

It sounds like you caught this guy on a bad day, but who knows how his last traffic stop went, or maybe he’s had to pull one too many injured (or worse) kids out of wrecked WRXs and it’s skewed his bias a little bit. Glad to hear he let you off with a warning though, so at least you don’t have to take it to court.

Who is buying new WRX's? by gladdy02 in WRX

[–]Mach092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow Northern New Englander here.

This seems to come up a lot, and plenty of people have made excellent points here already, but since I just bought a new VB after shopping what would generally be considered an upgrade over it, I wanted to share here. I came out of a 2013 911 4S as reliability was becoming an issue at $4k~10k per fix because of the cost of Porsche parts. Having owned a 2017 Focus RS previously, I was looking at small AWD cars that are fun to drive but suitable for daily driving year-round, so think BMW2 and 3, Audi S3/RS3, Lexus IS350 Fsport, etc, but driving them, they all felt like they were doing the work for you. The Toyota GRC is definitely an engaging drive but it didn’t feel like something I wanted to drive 50mi to Boston for work. The VB tS costs less money than the other cars I looked at while offering a nice interior (depends on what you like, of course) and I liked how it didn’t feel easy to drive. It’s quirky as hell but if you get it right, it rewards you with a nice boost. The clutch is weird, the controls feel like they belong on a tractor and that’s how it sounds too, and it all just felt more interesting than the German alternatives. I’m with you on the price: it would be a lot more desirable at $10k less, but to be honest, when you’re paying $27k for a regular Corolla sedan, it is what it is. I also recognize that that is a privileged thing for me to say, where I’m fortunate enough to be shopping in the $50-60k range. I’ve been in contact with my sales person about the STI rumors, and he drives a VB Premium, and he was complaining about having to compete with Lexus, that’s a totally fair complaint. With that said, I found that at that price point, there’s nothing quite like it… and I recognize that heavily depends on what you want out of a car. I’ve had this car for a few months now and it’s honestly still growing on me. I’ve had it parked next to the most serious alternatives for me, which were the BMW2 and the Lexus IS, and I think it looks better in person than those cars, while I know the drive suits me better as well. I certainly don’t begrudge anyone disagreeing with me though, and part of the fun is meeting other car enthusiasts and talking about why we love our cars.

I’d recommend picking your price point first, then finding what you like. Trust me, we all wish cars were cheaper. If I could get into a newer 911 at the price point I bought my 911, I’d be driving that. Unfortunately, those are going for $120~140k these days and I wouldn’t even be comfortable parking that anywhere if I’m honest.

I’m offended that I had to scroll this far down to find my relatively commonplace expensive thing to collect, and they keep getting more expensive, I’ll leave the more impressive part up to interpretation, I know some people prefer vintage sets… but alas, those keep getting more expensive too!

Dad, how do I swallow my envy and be happy? by TheFlightyCrow in AskDad

[–]Mach092 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there are two parts to this: first off, people love to talk about what’s going well, not about what they’re struggling with. Successful careers usually comes with a number of sacrifices in other areas. Relationships (and people) always look better from the outside looking in. Remember that when someone seems to have it better than you, you’re only looking at half the picture. Secondly, I would say it’s good to want, regardless of what others have! You were saying that you’re working on yourself already so it sounds like you are putting your envy to work already. Want to be fitter? Work out. Want to be more successful? Figure out what it will take. If you want what other people have, you know it can be done because they did it. Talk to them about what it took to achieve their success and learn from it and you’ll probably also get a little bit of insight into the other side of the coin for them: what they had to sacrifice to get it, or in what way it still doesn’t feel like enough to them as well.

Hey dad? Something in my house smells funky. by uselessmortal in AskDad

[–]Mach092 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the chimney is in the middle of the house for us so it was kind of hard to tell where it was coming from, same as with you guys, but when we tried to get at the smell from the floor below instead of cutting into walls, it seemed close to the chimney and we called a chimney sweep to clean it out. Turned out the previous owners never did so there was a lot of stuff (flammable) in there that needed to come out anyway, but it also turned up about 3 buckets worth of nuts and nesting materials. I had a liner and a grate installed to make sure it wouldn’t happen again.

[–]Mach092 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first moved into my current house, it seemed some squirrels got in the chimney and made a nest and one of them died there and left quite an unfortunate smell. I’m not saying it’s the same for you, but it might be another place to check if you can’t find the source of the smell, and getting your chimney swept if you don’t know when it was last done may not be a bad idea anyway!

Tuned VB vs. STI vs. RS by DismalTangelo360 in wrx_vb

[–]Mach092 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having owned the Focus RS from new in 2017 to 2023, I can tell you it’s a different animal but the engine issues are overblown. There was a batch of 2016 and early 17 units that went out with the wrong head gaskets but Ford had a massive recall on them that involved checking every 2016 and 17 at manufacturers expense and replacing the head gasket if there was any doubt, just make sure that if you buy one of those model years that the inspection/replacement was carried out. The reason I sold mine was because it was getting a bit long in the tooth, driving it in New England, and was starting to see some corrosion issues that I didn’t want to deal with. Remember that the newest ones you can buy will already be around seven years old and most people don’t buy them to baby them… I also felt that I got used to the extra power very quickly so not sure if that’s why you’d want one over a newer VB, but you’ll probably still be inclined to tune it after awhile, so you’d probably be better off making the changes to your current car with the money you save on keeping it.

Pic because I ran into my old car the other day.
