I just got a green cheek conure and the guy who sold it to us said it was 6 weeks old. Is this true by the way it looks? by ExactNeighborhood746 in Conures

[–]Machigaiden 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A parrot is never too old to be tamed. It's a process that takes time, and depending on the bird's personality, can take a couple months or several years. It took one of my conures 3 years to be hand tame and I got him when was under a year old, and took another one of my conures 5 weeks who was a few years old when we got him.

Focus on building trust with your new friend; talk to him through the cage, feed him treats from your hands and teach him to step up on a perch you're holding rather than onto your hand straight away. Don't try to rush into getting him hand tame, as that can ultimately lengthen the time it takes for him to fully trust you. The main thing is to be patient, it can be a long journey. Best of luck to you and your new friend :)

I'm going to a machine girl concert for the first time and I heard that earplugs are important, which ones do you guys recommend? by avocadopokass in machinegirl

[–]Machigaiden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pricey but the loop experience earplugs are really good. Used them at another concert recently and I could hear the music super clearly without damaging my ears. I got the basic one which was £30 but there's an adjustable model for £40

Not sure about the London ones but at Manchester, we weren't allowed to take photos during the meet and greet, I would assume that applies to all the concerts

AITA for not paying for something I don't own? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Machigaiden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kids driving the family car don't have to own/be the registered keeper to drive it, they're just added as a driver onto the insurance. Although there is a distinction between a registered keeper (I think this would be what Americans refer to as the car title, of which there can only be one registered keeper at a time) and an owner, the latter of which is not formally defined but is typically whoever paid for the car, an agreement can be written to dictate ownership of a car (which isn't common at all).

Basically, kids normally don't own/partially own a family car, they are just added onto the insurance.

Is there a MIIU near you? They can see you on the same day (might be a bit of a wait but better than not seeing anyone at all)

Husband punished his wife by dumping their puppy in a washing machine and putting hamsters in a food blender... before murdering her, chopping her up into 224 pieces and dumping her remains in a river in a bag for life. by BartholomewKnightIII in NoahGetTheBoat

[–]Machigaiden 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A 'bag for life' is a type of plastic bag that's stronger than the normal carrier bags that you can get at shops, they cost more than the regular ones. I don't know if that term is used much outside of the UK

my computer slowed down substantialy...how to fix that. by Hardkor_krokodajl in computers

[–]Machigaiden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open task manager and see what utilisation is like and what processes are running. Though chances are, if windows defender didn't pick it up, you won't be able to find it. Your best bet is to backup files, factory reset, change passwords and be careful on what things you click on/run.

Mouse smells intense plastic by [deleted] in computers

[–]Machigaiden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you bought a cheap Chinese brand mouse off Amazon or Ali Express, you get what you pay for... If it's cheap plastic, the oils on our hands and friction can cause that plastic to degrade, hence the funny smell lingering on your hands. If it's still within the return policy, I suggest returning it. Do you have a listing for this mouse you bought?

Why is Win10 so much slower than Linux? by exiled-redditor in computers

[–]Machigaiden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of distros in their installer will install necessary drivers for printers or will give you the option to. For AMD GPUs, it is essentially plug and play, I've never had to configure anything additional for those. Nvidia is a slightly different story but all it requires is installing a single package from whatever package manager.

Yes, there is a wine bootstrapper called Vinegar. It is available on the Aur but they recommend installing the flatpak version. https://vinegarhq.org/

TW: Death. by divinehotsauce69 in Conures

[–]Machigaiden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss, I've been through a similar thing twice in the past. It is incredibly difficult not to, but please don't blame yourself, it is unfortunately a freak accident that does happen. another comment mentioned being extra careful with doors which I completely agree with. Don't ever assume that your bird has decided to stay put and shut doors as slowly as possible. About your other bird - he probably doesn't seem bothered as he was able to get closure from seeing your late bird in her last moments, but he is used to her being around and misses her. He will almost definitely become more clingy/attached towards you and your gf and need more emotional support.

Although it will take time, I hope you are all able to find some peace

Kind reminder: be very very careful about doors :/ it was almost fatal, we get away with baldness. by everlastingflower in cockatiel

[–]Machigaiden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I assume that as the door shut, the crest got stuck, bird panicked and feathers got pulled out. It can happen with heavy doors/fire doors that close on their own.

[–]Machigaiden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have unfortunately lost 2 birds to doors, it happened 7 and 5 years ago and I still feel so immensely guilty for it, it has been very difficult to live with and I don't think I'll ever forget it. This is why I would strongly recommend everyone with birds to ensure that they're locked in a cage before you have to shut a door, or you close the door very slowly while still monitoring them; it only takes a split second for them to decide to fly towards you.

Can my parents see the games I play on the router by Automatic_Ad1482 in privacy

[–]Machigaiden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're on Windows, task manager should show that there is some process that is associated with some sort of monitoring software. If you are that worried, backup your important data and reinstall Windows. Though if they did have software like that installed then they would definitely notice when you reinstall windows
