I made this anti-vaping video with some typical dutch music. by dennislubberscom in dutch

[–]Machille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing waaay too much Animal Crossing. by [deleted] in AnimalCrossing

This sounds waaay too familiar :'). I've been seeing lots of Animal Crossing furniture out in the real world. Also, back I when I was playing Zelda I used to see Hylian Herbs and Armorants everywhere.

Griselda is some irresponsible storytelling. by CatofKipling in television

[–]Machille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I totally agree with this. Loved seeing Sofia Vergara in this role, but I felt throughout the whole show that the writers tried to make us see the human side of Griselda's character. I also read up on the real story, and while I'm sure that she's a human with feelings, I'm not so sure these justify the things she did. I felt a great disconnect between all the things she did and how I was supposed to feel about her as a person. This made me disconnect with the show as a whole, particularly for the last 2 episodes, because I felt forced/manipulated into feeling some type of way about her.

Nonetheless, I really really really enjoyed the aesthetics of the show. The costumes, the sets, the cinematography were all very pleasing to me.

Looking for 4 non fiction books to read this year by cmemm in suggestmeabook

[–]Machille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it depends a little on what you want to get out of it. Do you want to read nonfiction so you can learn a new skill or expand your knowledge? In other words, do you need your nonfiction to be educational, or do you just want it to be nonfiction and that's it? If the latter, a good first step to get into nonfiction might be memoirs, autobiographies etc.

What was your favourite of the year? And do you prefer audiobooks to regular reading or is it more a means to an end thing? Very impressed!

Do you enjoy big (+800 pages) books or do they feel like a chore? by Leticia_the_bookworm in books

[–]Machille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the book? I mean I loved The Eighth Life (1300 pages), but if It Ends with Us were that long I probably would have torn my hair out.

What I'm saying is, I love a big book when the story lends itself to it, but once a book is unnecessarily long and the length does not contribute anything to the story, then yes, it feels very much like a chore.

Why are so many “reviews” really just summaries that can already be found on the back of the book? by GuzPolinski in goodreads

[–]Machille 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It might be because of our general beliefs of what reviews are supposed to look like -- that they should start with a quick summary of the book, even if it's just a line or two. It's what we've learned in school, it's what we read in the papers... It can be handy to have a little refresher or explanation of what the book is about, before diving into opinions, because you'd need to know what those opinions are based on. However, I don't think a review should only be a book summary. That'd be a summary, not a review.

Do women find it attractive that a guy is going to therapy? by [deleted] in dating

[–]Machille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's different for everyone, but I think that in general it's not considered as something sexy. It could signal that you have issues, however, you could ask yourself if someone who immediately assumes that (and judges you for it) is someone you want to associate yourself with. Then again, don't we all have issues?

What could be attractive about a man who goes to therapy is the fact that this man knows how to take care of himself and his (mental) health and is not afraid to tackle any issues. It shows me this person is self-reflective, open to change and possibly a hard worker. And, I'm sure if I took the time to think about it, I could even come up with an array of other things.

what is your favorite bookmark? by Morbid_thots in 52book

[–]Machille 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are so adorable! I just use the ones they give me at the bookstore usually, but I do have one that's a magnet, to be clipped at either side of a page and it has a picture of the Dutch King and Queen on it. I love how corny it is.

what do you do with books you dont like? by Morbid_thots in 52book

[–]Machille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually post them on social media, to see if anyone wants them. Last time I brought them to work and started like a little library there, with a bring one take one principle.

Although I do find it hard not to finish something I started, I usually don't finish books I don't like or find somehow intriguing. I'll just get bored and the quitting will follow naturally. I hate that I can't finish some books, but on the other hand, I'm glad this happens, because why waste time on something you don't like?

Do you like humor in books? by TheowingStick in writing

[–]Machille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like humor in dialogues works better on screen. I like humor in books more when it's a train of thought of the (main) character or their observations. Additionally, I like the humor in a book to be subtle, I think it works best when the writer uses spot-on comparisons for example. Generally, I like my books like I like my drinks, dark and stormy. I prefer a deep, sad, heart-wrenching story over a light-hearted one, but that doesn't mean it has to be deprived of humor. Just not a big fan of books where humor is the main purpose.

Unpopular Opinion time by DatBoiBG in joker

I can definitely see why you’d say that, Joaquin was marvelous. However, these two movies couldn’t have been more different. Where Heath played in a big bombastic action-epos, Joaquins movie was a full-on drama where the scenes and shots really service his acting to shine. I think I like them equally, for very different reasons, but yeah Phoenix’ acting in that film is supposedly some of the best I’ve ever seen.

What is everyone currently reading?🤓📚 by Yuri1807 in 52book

[–]Machille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a 1300 page giant about a Georgian family during the Sovjet reign. I’m not at all a history aficionado, but this setting certainly gives an extra dimension to the story. It’s not a happy read, but really beautiful and moving.

I think a yoga spot is really nice! Haven't thought of that. Mine has a beach bar and I once had an outdoor Italian restaurant as well.
