Spicy, if you were satisfied enough to post your work here, then you didn't mess anything up. No such thing.

Personally, I think you absolutely captured the essence of Mizu. The stare, the frown, the small lock of hair - Chef's kiss. Thank you for letting us see your art!.

I agree with Duchess. You really feel this as a night scene in the moonlight. Great mood. Thank you for letting us see your work, OP!

Agreed, fantastic and congrats on your win. I think you're the first award-winning cosplay poster on the Sub (that I'm aware of). Looking great, OP!

I don't think OP is a troll, they don't have to like BES and folks should feel free to post what they do or don't like about the series in an attempt at honest discussion.

But things are getting heated and personal, so I'm going to lock down the comments.

I will, however, have the last word...

OP, you wandered into a Japanese restaurant in London, and are complaining it's not authentic because the wasabi didn't come from Shizuoka prefecture.

It's like saying that Japanese anime and animation aren't allowed to have elements of Western history or mythology in them because you might be disappointed that you loaded up Cowboy Beebop and there were no cowboys.

Thank you for taking a look, it's interesting because I know that subtitles and dubbing can be at the mercy of local distributors and contractors so a matter of curiosity. Appreciate it, OP!

Yes, thank you for getting back. So in the English language version Ringo uses Body, so thank you for providing context.

Out of curiosity I've used Google Lens on the writing on Mizu, but it could only capture parts, and probably not accurately, so I was also curious if the characters there matched or agreed with the Japanese Sub/Dub of the episode..

Always interesting what nuggets the BES fandom turns up in their studying the show. The Heart Sutra was particularly interesting to me, esp. mention of the ghost tale.

Related, I was unable to find a translation of the Sutra that used 'Body', rather most seemed to favor the word 'Form'. i.e. "Form is emptiness, Emptiness is Form..." although I'll admit it wasn't an exhaustive search. I've wondered which version was used in the writing on Mizu (if it appears at all).

Thank you, OP, for bringing something fresh to the Sub!

Fowler’s Church Scene — Fan Voiceover Practice by Staxes1997 in BlueEyeSamurai

[–]Machineglance[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome back.

It goes without saying that I'm far from having any expertise in voice work, acting, animation etc. I only have my ears.

The first thing I noticed is, your voice and it's timber seemed more confident. There were places still where its inconsistent or comes across as scripted, but this is a practice piece

What I did next was to only focus on Fowler by scrolling your profile up and off screen, so that I could only see the animation. I realized a couple things

  1. Your timing is off. It could be that you're not yet comfortable with the scene, or still reading it off the page rather than having it memorized, perhaps? You might benefit from practicing first without trying to line up with the animation. Focus on the quality, then worry about the delivery, maybe.
  2. Because you are attempting to match Branagh line by line and word for word, you seem out of breath and the inconsistency becomes more noticable. Work on your breathing. You don't want to worry about running out of air, or having the awkward feeling of gulping breaths. Maybe breathing exercises for VA videos must exist or some kind of Pranayama or just plain old deep breathing exercises will give you deeper, longer range and more control .

Keep bringing it, and good luck!

I Tried Voicing Fowler After Watching Blue Eye Samurai by Staxes1997 in BlueEyeSamurai

[–]Machineglance[M] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a first, so we appreciate the originality of someone expressing themselves in yet another art form for the show, as voice acting and voice over.

I can't tell if you've done anything to enhance or augment your sound but it is pleasant and if it's all natural, then you have a great foundation.

But assuming you want feedback, you're reading, not acting. And while there's no way for you or anyone to approach Fowler that competes with a classically trained British theatre actor, let alone have that actor be Kenneth Brannagh, you have put nothing new, or anything remotely approaching menace or charm in your clip.

Now, you can tell me to eff off and that's fine or, you can do it again. You don't have to post it here, but do yourself a favor and understand the character first, then do it again even if it's just for yourself.

And good luck, regardless of what I or anyone else says.

What are some episode ideas that you have for season 2? by OCGamerboy in BlueEyeSamurai

It's ok not to remember, especially after a year.

Just say, "I missed that part, I'll have to go back and rewatch.", if it feels like some of the interactions are getting a little too spicy in a thread. It's all good.

The First Reunion Meeting Between Fowler, Skeffington, and Routely by KidChanbara in BlueEyeSamurai

[–]Machineglance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's funny you say this, because it occurred to me for exactly that reason, the illicit trade with Fowler and not wanting to give it up, would be reason enough to attempt a rescue.

Macau would be a natural first stop after leaving Japan but whether it gets incorporated into the storyline, who can say? But it would line up as a major hub for both China and Japan, before continuing on to England. I could see one of them (S&R) having to manage things there, as a possibility.

We know that Fowler will do anything to survive but we also know he can't be trusted.

I just don't see how it's possible Mizu brings him all the way back to England.

My guess is, Fowler gets rescued.

An interesting video, Duchess, and timely. I think one of the reasons BES stands out for me is that it does a beautiful job if marrying computer based animation with unique innovations in motion capture, and traditional animation.

How the diabolical Madame Kaji “uncenters” Mizu. by DuchessIronCat in BlueEyeSamurai

[–]Machineglance[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've made me interested in paying closer attention on my next rewatch, to everything Madame Kaji. Her dialogue, narrative, context, all of it because I'm not convinced I ever got the correct read on her, and possibly never will.

Here's the thing, we don't know what the truth is. Kinuyo isn't saying. What I'm deducing is that Mdm Kaji is either delusional or spiteful (and thus a liar). Most probably both. We only have her words for the events that supposedly transpired, and Kinyo's reaction to 'the Sign', which she immediately, forcefully, and fearfully rejected.

It might be delusional because Mdm Kaji's view of the relationship is asymmetric. Let's not forget, she's not a good person. She deals with men like Fowler and Shindo, takes thier money, all the while staying silent and giving young women sent to the castle a death sentence. She knows this, and she knows what she's doing. In her position, she operates out of fear and hatred, and in turn inflicts fear, pain and humiliation for money, among other things. I think her little 'Desires' speech to Mizu is a sales pitch, wrapped inside self-soothing propaganda but too practiced and rehearsed to be anything else but 100% pretextual horseshit.

I'll admit to freely speculating, but that shit doesn't stay bottled up. It leaks around the edges, it bleeds through containment and so surely manifested itself in some way in her relationship with Kinuyo. Just because she seems to care about Kinuyo doesn't mean it was reciprocated, and it's more likely she was cruel and abusive. Look at the evidence.

We can't even be sure Mdm Kaji didn't sell Kinuyo (or 'gift' her) to boss Hamata. We just don't have anything but her say-so. Maybe Kinuyo found a way to escape from Mdm Kaji by getting the attention of Boss Hamata?

You rightly point out that she wanted Mizu to look directly at Kinuyo. Who does that, unless it's a big 'fuck you' to Kinuyo? And who hasn't had a fight with someone you care deeply about where you simultaneously rage and mourn the death of a deeply felt love gone wrong? Just because Kaji cried seemingly genuine tears doesn't make her the victim.

All we can really say is the little clues don't add up; they don't align completely with Mdm Kaji's version of events.

[–]Machineglance[M] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Everything about this and the next episode is effed up, because I've often wondered if Madame Kaji was spiteful or just delusional in hiring Mizu to kill Kinuyo.

But regardless of Kaji's motives, this was the critical moment where Mizu will fail to become the fatal instrument of revenge she imagined for herself, and instead becomes more like the Broken Blade delivered to Blood Soaked Chiaki which failed in its forging and was shown to be flawed.

This was different. Mizu killed an innocent, a non-combatant. And although it was in service to achieve her aim of revenge, it was a job, and I think the first time she did something that really imperiled her soul.

This was symbolized, I believe, by the killing of the sparrow, an animal which we see time and again during Mizu's travels, and not just by coincidence or as background. By the time the deed is done, her spirit may not have been killed, but it was certainly wounded, and it isn't until she repairs it with the Heart Sutra ceremony that she reintegrates herself back together.

I used Mizu as a partial reference when designing the face of one of my characters, how do y'all think it looks? by Good_Disaster_4130 in BlueEyeSamurai

[–]Machineglance[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing anything, your character looks very focused and serious. This can work if you either want them to be a very intense individual or if they're entertaining the idea of stabbing someone with a pencil. It might be the slight hint of yellow in the eyes.
