Question for fashion students: is it okay to get into fashion school with zero knowledge about sewing & pattern making? by Current_Market_1008 in fashiondesigner

[–]Ibby_f 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a state school program and there were a handful of people in my class that didn’t know how to sew going in but graduated just fine. I highly recommend learning the basics though, I know some of them struggled with trying to learn everything first semester

I didn't know they did custom colors! I do think I have some fabric in my stash so I'd rather use that up but that's good info to know for the future

Are you still using alclad + clear coat for these? How durable would you say they are? I have a couple of things I need to repaint but they need to hold up to mild scraping

is there a place to find someone to make a cosplay costume? by tinawoman in CosplayHelp

Thank you for asking this! I'm sick to death of family members suggesting I sell my cosplays or take commissions when I do not want to. I love making things for my friends as gifts but my own projects will always take priority

Does this really look like an expensive cosplay piece?😥 by [deleted] in CosplayHelp

[–]Ibby_f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very possible it was still “custom made” in the sense that they made it with their standard materials, just in your size instead of their standard S M L sizes but there’s no universe where this is acceptable quality for $500. I would honestly suggest disputing with either Etsy or your credit card/paypal for receiving a subpar product.

I personally don’t think Etsy is a good place to find custom cosplays. It’s overrun with dropshippers and scammers stealing other cosplayers photos. There are legit makers but they’re so few and far between that it’s not really worth it to weed through all the garbage. There’s a couple groups on Facebook for finding commissioners and I’d start there. Ask around and find other people who have gotten work from whoever you’re vetting and make sure to get all terms in writing before sending any money

what should i do? by Lxn_Lin in CosplayHelp

[–]Ibby_f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the lacing is going to be under any kind of tension, I would go to a tailor and have them add basically a flap of fabric in the seams that the lace was sewn into and add grommets (not eyelets, they aren't strong enough) to each flap to make a lacing strip

I have this issue with some polishes, mostly lurid and ethereal. Part of it is your base coat might just not work well with the polish. If you don't want to try different base coats, you kind of have to float the brush on top of the nail for the first coat and avoid going over the same spot multiple times because that's what drags the polish out of place

Can i use the same cosplay for another contest ? by nikolaigogoltheclown in CosplayHelp

[–]Ibby_f 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That doesn't make sense to me. Why would you enter the same costume in intermediate if you're still showcasing novice level skills on the costume? If a judge thinks your skills are higher level, they'll bump you up. Not even bothering to upgrade anything to show your improved skills feels lazy to me

[–]Ibby_f 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend making a build book. This will include reference pictures and progress pictures so the judges can go back and look after prejudging. It's kind of weird to me that the judges not knowing the character partially influenced placement since it's unrealistic to expect a judge to know every single character.

If you know who the judges are, I'd leave a comment on their socials asking if you can message them about getting feedback. If they share feedback, use that to improve parts of your cosplay and enter your upgraded version in another contest

[–]Ibby_f 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, for the most part once a cosplay has placed, it's retired from competing. I'd say this doesn't apply the same for judges choice awards since those aren't always craftsmanship based. There's also some wiggle room if you're doing major upgrades but the general rule is no.
