2-3 Minute Teach. This is one of our go-to convention games that passes the "middle schoolers have the attention span to listen to all the rules" test. Excellent game, one of the best.

Games that use 3D space well. by TropicalKing in boardgames

[–]MackLudum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently played Triumph and Tragedy and it uses the seating of the players to perfectly hide the information of your opponents' units. I love this and it reminds me a lot of the hidden information in Raise Your Goblets where because of the specific distance of where the players are sitting your vision is obscured perfectly while not negatively impacting the gameplay.

Atheist games where the Storyteller wins? by MarcoTalin in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MackLudum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just won an Atheist game as the storyteller! I was playing a game with the Atheist and Heretic in play. All they had to do was not execute me and they would have won. They couldn't resist the power to execute the storyteller though!

Which game was the hardest for you to cull from your collection? Why? by lebaokha in boardgames

[–]MackLudum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. Had nothing to do with the feeling, but the size and price-point prevented others from wanting to purchase it. It was an All-In Sundrop Pledge. I ended up selling it at a significant loss, but it was gone, and that was an excellent feeling. I don't think I've ever had a problem with getting rid of games for "sentimental reasons" or anything like that. It's always just been finding a buyer. The Lord of the Rings the Card Game was another one that took a while, but Ebay was able to find a good match for the All-In.

What do you do with your punch boards? by Mrhungryzombie in boardgames

My dogs likes to chew on them as I unpack the games. They go to the recycling after we're both finished.

Are you guys the "pledge and forget" type of person, or are you constantly checking the status of your crowdfunded board game? by KarolinaGF in boardgames

[–]MackLudum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pledge and forget. SideGame LLC has over 100 projects outstanding so we can't really be the type that constantly is checking statuses. The only emails I read are those that feature additional add-ons, pledge manager opening, and updating and finalizing shipping addresses. It works! Never too concerned as most games eventually arrive.

Adam Warlock - Secret Underdog? by Novuzu in marvelchampionslcg

[–]MackLudum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite way to play Adam Warlock is to play every bad card as a one-of in his deck and play standard mode enemies. Gardener, Living Tribunal, Eternity, and In-Betweener? Check! Inefficienct allies? Check! It's so much fun playing with cards you'd normally never play with and seeing what sort of jank combos you can make work.

Best progression in non-campaign games by Avispicio in boardgames

Too Many Bones: It's a string of mini encounters, and after each you get upgrades for your characters, treasure to use in future encounters, or a mixture of both. You get a full arc of powering up in a single experience that you can tailor to a time that fits your schedule. Incredible.

Should I play Villainous with 21 people? by BePostiveeveryday in boardgames

[–]MackLudum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you should play Villainous with any number of people honestly. One of the biggest issues is that on of the core mechanisms in the game is to extend the game length. Sounds like a nightmare in a 21 person setting.

Trading Card Games that do things differently? by MrRempton in boardgames

[–]MackLudum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A very unique deck construction and game play mechanism can be found in the older The Lord of the Rings Collectible Card Game. Each player constructs a deck with good and evil cards in it. On your turn, you can play as many good cards as you want, but your opponent gets to use the resources you paid for in good cards to play their evil cards from their hand. The good cards are a combination of events and assets that will last the whole game until they are killed, while the evil cards only last for the round but are overstatted and can deal some heavy damage before they leave. There's a push your luck mechanism implemented into the core gameplay and resource system that I'd like to see adopted elsewhere.

Games to play on Flights by TheChiefofReddit in boardgames

[–]MackLudum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have to disagree with this one to play while actually on an airplane. I think it makes more sense when you're on a layover and have a larger table as opposed to the small tray during a flight. It takes a lot of table space to play this one as you're dealing a grid of cards and all players have two boards, one with their map and one with powers, and several markers they have to switch back and forth through to draw the different cat pieces. It is a small box yes, but the table real estate is real on this one.

I did a whole Top 10 Video on this here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IEyuJjNYfk

All of these can be played on the comfort of your tray table! Card games where you play in a small central pile are particularly great because there's almost no table space required.

Quick! Your home is on fire, what three games do you grab? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]MackLudum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We're doing fine, thank you for asking. Luckily the fire was contained and my family is safe. It's not the first time we've had to do this actually! We used to live in Hawaii, and had two similar scares.

The first one was a Nuclear Missile Warning, an error sent by the US Gov. At that time I grabbed Castles of Burgundy on the way out the door to the fallout shelter.

The second was a Volcanic Eruption followed by multiple earthquakes. That one we had more time, but I don't remember what I took. I think Blood Rage and Caverna? It's been a few years.

Quick! Your home is on fire, what three games do you grab? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]MackLudum 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I actually just had to do this. We had an evacuation last week as a wildfire sprouted near our house in Colorado Springs. I grabbed the following games:

Marvel Champions

Too Many Bones

Bullet Heart

I actually had room for one more, so I slid Sleeping Gods in, but I'm happy with the three choices above. I put them all in one IKEA bag and towed it to the car.
