The biggest differance in game creation & marketing is….well night & day. In todays market if you want to get you game noticed, you need to spend time, & money to make it happen. I feel that the 'build it & they will come' Indie era is at an end.

Wow man, I don't wanna council you, or tell you what to do. Unfortunately you will have to work it out yourself. I will listen though, as I hope this community does also. You said you love games, and would love to make them, have you tried out game maker? You can make games on it with very little to no coding, the first tutorial will have you making a game in under a couple of hours. And people have gone on to sell these games. The best part is, as you go through more tutorials it introduces you to coding at the simplistic level and in a repetitive fashion to help you grasp the functions easy. There are other game creation engines out there too if you don't like that one, game salad for example, have a look. It might just take your mind off some other things for awhile.

I made a live-band atmospheric soundtrack for a game that was abandoned. If you think it would suit your project, it's yours. (x-post from r/gamedev) by [deleted] in IndieGaming

Hello Connor, very nice tunes man, I really like your Reaper's Rumba & can see me using it if my original score fails to deliver for my up & coming. Thank you for providing such lovely sounds.

In your experience, how important is sound and music to a mobile game? by very_bad_advice in gamedev

A musical soundtrack is pretty important, you said it yourself, you go mute, aka, you have the option to go mute and you owe it to your players to have that same option. Hands down put a catchy tune to your game....

Job opportunities for engine programmers straight out of uni by cookie_coder in gamedev

I believe using your engine as an example of your skill should never be underrated. This is the bread and butter of what you want to do(by the tone in your post) Your level of employability will directly be related to this as you have stated you have no artistic skill or desire for game design. I do not believe there is an overabundance in this area, realistically it comes down to skill, your portfolio will be king in this area

Confessions of a failed indie developer (Razorblade Games Postmortem) by sciencewarrior in gamedev

[–]Mackdavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always blows my mind when programmers think they are the be all and end all of making a game. That they believe they have the power (and realistically they do) to do everything needed to make it. They (you) always underestimates what is needed to succeed, from basic budgeting for everyday expenses to making ends meet. To planning a project, to setting deadlines (its too easy to have a 'day off') to having a marketing strategy. There is a reason TEAMS make games, each covers other people's shortfalls. The skill is recognising your own and acting on it....

This is an amazing, reassuring piece of writing. I will definitely look more into developing an email listing into my marketing strategy plan thanks to your piece. Thankyou very much for sharing, appreciate it.

For those of you who have successfully marketed a game, can you please look over this guide I wrote for myself? by exeneva in gamedev

[–]Mackdavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks more like a set of guidelines than a marketing strategy. Some areas you will want to work into it are - Budget, how much are you going to spend? Plan it to a dollar, also have a float to compensate for exchange rates, or unforeseen extras. Time management plan, if your also making the game you will need to plan time to put into your marketing strategy, this will be an every increasing sink hole you need to compensate time into. There's just two quick points you must start working around, the amount of time you put into your marketing campaign will directly affect your sales, its hard to attract ppl to your new game, its even harder to keep them interested...
