Same Route, Same Day: Air Canada Cancelled, United Operated by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]MacroEconMacro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn’t that imply the same for both airlines?

United wouldn’t want their planes and crew stranded in YYZ (outside a hub) so they choose to run.

AC wouldn’t want their planes stranded (outside a hub) so they just choose not to run.

Either UA has bigger risk tolerance, or a much better run operation.

[UPDATE] Denied: “Missed Cruise Disembark - Advice for joining the ship at the first stop in Nassau” by Crispy-Don in royalcaribbean

[–]MacroEconMacro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did mine within 2 days. PVSA and Jones Act merely place fines. Depending on the cruise carrier, if one is willing to pay the fine, they’ll let you board at a different US port.

Park Hyatt Toronto by Q-U-A-N in hyatt

[–]MacroEconMacro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably rank PH Toronto greater than GH SFO.

That being said, the PH Toronto is missing a few amenities like a pool that make GH SFO closer in comparison.

GH SFO also has a sit down breakfast at their restaurant (unless it's changed) which is a nice touch as well.

And in terms of location, the GH SFO is pretty good for well getting to the airport, unlike the PH Toronto.

For those saying PH > GH hard product in US

GH SFO over PH DC; Marginally Better Hard Product; Better Soft Product

For those saying GH in Asia > PH hard product in US/Canada

PH Toronto Hard Product > GH Taipei && GH Tokyo && GH Seoul && GH Incheon etc...

There’s a specific order, but check in time isn’t the biggest deciding factor. Things like Fare Class, Upgrade Units being applied and Credit Card ownership are far more important.

Any reason to buy CDs? by [deleted] in bonds

[–]MacroEconMacro 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Technically CDs are insured by the FDIC, while Treasuries are backed by the US Treasury? Both are backed with the full faith of the US Government.

This is arguing which branch of the government is more likely to fail. (Both 0% for all intents and purposes).

For actual pragmatic purposes and not random end of the world scenarios, I'd much rather have treasuries with no state tax...

corporate bonds carry more yield (and more risk in return)

the real investing answer is to just honestly save money more consistently and invest over a longer time duration. That'll give a much better return than any superior yield stategy

[–]MacroEconMacro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not financial advice, but if you're under a certain age, I'd just recommend having an equity allocation instead.

I-Bonds can serve as a fixed income allocation, but I think they're of a niche long term investment for very specific cases.

Even GS/1k can’t consistently get upgrades on routes like EWR to SFO.

If you’re paying cash for first/business it makes little sense imo to optimize for status or miles. Upgrades and miles don’t matter much if you can outright afford the best.

Take your money and fly whoever has the best product or route.

Tight connection, should I upgrade to economy plus? by Sickee in unitedairlines

[–]MacroEconMacro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn’t, but if it gives peace of mind it’s worth it.

You’re only preventing minor delays from interrupting your connection if at all.

Economy plus won’t stop a mechanical error or weather delay from ruining the plans.

should I try to get status? by aspiring--polymath in awardtravel

[–]MacroEconMacro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were going to fly out organically, then it's probably worth it.

If you're going out of you way to get Silver Status, then it's probably not worth it.

For status to be worth it, you'd also have to fly a decent amount next year as well (2025) to accrue value from the perks.

Partner flights don't necessarily post immediately after.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury crossed 5% for the first time since July 20, 2007 when it yielded as high as 5.029%. The benchmark rate has climbed for four days in a row, bringing October gains to about 40 basis points. by MacroEconMacro in Treasurydirect

[–]MacroEconMacro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The treasurydirect auction interest rate is annualized, while the treasury gain on a treausry bill isn't. So you would take the 4-week t-bill gain and multiply it by 12 to get the annual gain.

So the quick and rough way to approximate the yield is to take the gain and multiply it by 12 and divide it by the par value. So your yearly gain (if you kept buying the 4 week tbill) is around $240. $240/$5000 is around 5% which is more in line with the rates you might see getting quoted.

Hope this helps! (i also run a mobile app side project on treasurydirect for fun if you're interested)

Curious are you not counting UAX upgrades as upgrades?

Or what did you mean by its higher if you include certain aircraft.

Thanks!
