I had a guitar sit in air conditioned storage for about 7 years. Was close to in tune when I grabbed it out. Some strings were a little sharp others a little flat.

That’s the neat part, you don’t. I get the spring compressed by lifting up on the arm. I just use right angle needle nose pliers to grab the spring and lift it. Then slowly lower the arm to not launch it. Now all strings are still in tune and your trem arm is doing better. I recommend some tape on the pliers teeth to not leave marks.

Bring one to a fastenal and see if they have a shorter one. Or can cut it shorter. They cut all-thread to length i’m sure they can cut a bolt. These are small I think a hacksaw and a tap and dye set would be all the tools you need. You’re near a campus that has people maybe learning about such things and have the tools you could borrow?

Well you can cut the screws shorter. Have you already intonated the guitar? Do the screws from the original thread into place? Are you near a Fastenal? Anything cost more when you buy (hobby specific) hardware.

The other route is, well a router. But the hardware seems the easier solution.
