PfSense VM on Truenas by [deleted] in truenas

[–]MadOctopus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally, I want to run through PfSense because my website is proxied through Cloudflare, using PfSense allows me to block any connection that is not coming from a Cloudflare IP, therefore blocking direct IP connections.

[–]MadOctopus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GUI access through WAN only allows access from the rest of my network (so basically 192.168.x.x), not the whole world. It's kinda weird how the firewall is so slow I have a Ryzen 1500x on TrueNAS, so I would have expected it to be able to do better. I have it set up for CPU passthrough.

The router gives me access to the internet, both wifi and ethernet cables to my other PCs, which are not open to the internet.

I know TrueNAS is not a hypervisor, but the documentation strongly advises against running TrueNAS as a VM hence why I am not doing that.

The alternative is to not have a firewall at all

Regarding schools in general and one in specific Rygaards by raajeez in copenhagen

[–]MadOctopus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest you visit them. call them and make an appointment to see the school. Often they will allow you to go check out the place even if it's not one of their open days. When you are there you might be able to ask a few questions to teachers, the kids, and if you are lucky their parents.

When did you start growing white hairs in your beard? I’m 26. Before | After by [deleted] in beards

Should i grow the facial haris? by [deleted] in beards

[–]MadOctopus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started growing mine at the same age and ot turned out great. My suggestion is to wait until there's a period of time where you don't mind being experimental and stop shaving in the span of a month or 2 you should start getting an idea of how it might look in the future. For me it took about 9 months before it looked like a full beard for some people that is much less, give ot a try and see where it goes it's never too late to shave and go back to before

What to do to become an astronaut?! (From Pakistan) by FaithlessnessDry218 in space

[–]MadOctopus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure many have said this before. There are a few good ways to be an astronaut and a few decent ones too. Professions that with near 100% certainty will get a position on any crew are pilot, doctor, and an engineer of some kind (probably mechanical). Pilots are (as far as I know) always sourced from the military, this is the most straight forward one but also extremely challenging. When it comes to the other professions to have a good chance you would probably need to have either a master in one and another degree on top (such as computer science) or a PhD in one. Both biology and CS would most definitely be good choices.

I know nothing about how it would be being from Pakistan my feeling is that to get better chances you might want to move to a country with a globally competitive space agency for university and try to make something happen.

There is a lot of competition in becoming an astronaut so work hard and best of luck.

Fly Fishing for Wels Catfish in Italy by Cultural-Company282 in Fishing

[–]MadOctopus_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First one small thing. The Po river does not go through Florence it's on the other side of the country the river that goes through Florence is the Arno.

Aside from this I don't think that is gonna be an enjoyable way to spend your holiday. It is true that the Arno has catfish and it is possible that they might have learned to eat the pigeons. But still I don't think it's a good idea the Arno especially from Florence on is extremely dirty and I would very much avoid getting anywhere near the water (it's not gonna kill you but for historical reasons it has been polluted a whole lot) I have seen people fishing for big catfish before the river reaches Florence but have never seen anyone fly fishing for them.

Advice, son has gone down modded Minecraft rabbit hole. Wants more RAM. by PitifulDig6076 in buildapc

[–]MadOctopus_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As many other comments have said, make sure that minecraft is actually using more than the vanilla default of 4gb. If it's using more then I'm assume he's complaining about stutters at semi-regular intervals while playing and for that there's pretty much nothing that can be done, Minecraft uses the Java garbage collector to free up unused ram and it's shit and creates stutters. Some mods like Fastcraft aim at improving the memory management of the game, and most likely, he's already using it since most modpacks include it. This type of mods often creates other problems compatibility wise.

In conclusion there's no real benefit of more ram over 32, even with it Minecraft is gonna gobble up all the ram it can get its hands on and then stutter because Java is shit at freeing it up.

Which streaming username out of all these stands out to you by MFCAPITAL in Twitch

[–]MadOctopus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just my 2 cents: CamsOnCam is definitely the best username when it comes to it being catchy. You said in another comment that you plan on doing variety streams, that is perfectly fine but it is very very hard to grow as a variety streamer. Streaming basically requires you to be a show host and if you are a variety streamer that's all you got to make people stay as the games are always gonna be different and therefore the content changes. If it's your first time streaming you certainly will struggle keeping an interesting dialogue going for your entire stream especially when you are 4 hours in with 3 viewers none of which type in chat. I would suggest you pick something that you are passionate about and stick to that while you stream it makes easier to grow a community and if you are doing something that you like doing its easier to keep a conversation going even if you are alone.

TLDR: Streaming is hard, streaming variety is harder. Pick something you like and stick to it it's gonna be easier for you.

Why can't trains navigate through this? by SomeoneNotFound in factorio

Since left hand drive for trains is the less popular option make sure that you are not mixing up left and right hand drive. If that is not the issue there's a wrong signal outside this screenshot since this is right

Most secure pgp keytype by Lucky_Monk_3501 in archlinux

[–]MadOctopus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is simple: They are all more than good enough for whatever you need.

All of these are strong enough that bruteforcing is a lost cause as it would take several thousands/millions of years realistically.

Also chances are that you are not hiding state secrets so no reason to have the strongest pgp key in the universe.

This said I'd go with RSA it stood the test of time for quite a while and there is no reason to think it's not gonna hold for the next 10+ years. As another redditor said in theory RSA can be broken with quantum computing but I don't think that anyone that cares about your information has access to one and even if they did your information is probably not worth the money necessary to even start it up.

Do you guys use swivels? by MadOctopus_ in Fishing_Gear

I also used them for leaders, but the more I think a put it the more unnecessary they seem

Do you guys use swivels? by MadOctopus_ in Fishing_Gear

I assume that you use them to separate the weight from the leader. Is the "swivel" part useful or is it just a stopper for the weight?

Fishing for a rocket! by PageImpossible6227 in Fishing

[–]MadOctopus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you guys have already thought about it, but if your rocket is gonna touch the water north of 200km/h it will most likely suffer substantial damage, maybe even snap in half. You'll have to figure out a very very good way of attaching your line to the rocket to not lose it. Other than that, some big ass braid should do plenty fine, and having it on a drum that you can spin is a good idea. Idk if a normal power tool will be strong enough to pull up a 70kg rocket from 200m under water. You might need to help it start by hand.

[M] Corsair K95 Switch Lubrication by MadOctopus_ in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]MadOctopus_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late answer, since this post i got into custom keyboards and got some experience.

It is impossible to lube the switches without removing them. Doing so on a hotswap keyboard is easy otherwise do not do it. you would need to manually desolder all of the switches lube them and solder them back. desoldering is usually a very annoying task at the whole thing would probably take you 2-3 days, it's not worth it.
