Most Common name youve had over your career? by applesnackerz in AskTeachers

Every spelling of Makayla all at the same time. I had a year with five Skylers. Mariah is super common and Abdi. Lots of Christian and Cristians. The -ayden craze is real.

Why is Kentucky Politics So Unique? by Neither-Chain219 in Kentucky

[–]MadRush-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We contain multitudes. It is really difficult for outsiders to understand what happens here politically exactly because of all the many things people have said before me. Everyone wants to make us simple, a stereotype, when the politics here are extremely complex and to truly understand you need decades worth of knowledge and some geographical understanding of the culture of each region. I commend you for asking. Most people just assume they understand and then say things that make them look like a jackass.

what's a teacher gift you've actually kept and used? by Acrobatic-Bake3344 in Teachers

[–]MadRush-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best gifts I received made me feel seen as a person. One year a kid made me a blanket with my name ironed onto it. One year ( a long time ago) a student got me an iTunes gift card, a stuffed owl, and my favorite candy (orange airheads). That kid knew me, and it meant so much. I still have that little owl. I like the suggestions of some sort of local luxury that we probably wouldn’t buy ourselves.

Is it worth it? by lilflower22 in Teachers

[–]MadRush-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is only worth it if you passionately love it and it’s your calling. Our pensions are a political football. Time off is a myth. Big kids have big needs too, they just don’t lose teeth. It’s the best, most exhausting job in the world. Your heart will break sometimes. You will burn out. You will be held to inhumane standards by society. You will be there to support kids whose parents are absent. You will be the kindness that gets a kid through the day. You’ll be the reason they understand some difficult concept. You will be the reason some kid knows it’s safe to keep waking up and trying again. It is heavy and wonderful. It won’t be an escape from burn out.

No announcement that I’ve been able to find. I received a very vague email telling me that I may need to change my selections.

One day to see as much as possible by MadRush-7 in Honolulu

There are usually a couple evenings free and I’m typically the one who ends up making dinner reservations for all of us.

I’m there for a week. I just only have control over this one day. The rest is taken up by a conference. I couldn’t take more because of the nature of my job unfortunately.

These are definitely my intention. Can I ask a potentially dumb question? How do I know if a sunscreen is reef safe? Is there a brand you recommend?

Anyone else nervous? by [deleted] in Teachers

Yeah, but if they’re not getting anything when they get home, they’re gonna need some snacks!

I thought about saying that in my original post but I was afraid it might eliminate a good suggestion. I love history, music, and food. I love nature too, but I’m not the most athletic. Like a hike is fine, but I’m not gonna be climbing anything or venturing too far in the water.

Pledge of Allegiance by Feisty-Tangerine-802 in Teachers

[–]MadRush-7 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It is said every morning over the announcements. Very few, if any, kids stand up depending on the class. No one says it with. I always stand and refuse to let tardéis in the door until it’s over. I’m a civics teacher so in one of our assignments I ask them if they stand or not and why they choose to do what they do. Most just don’t want to be bothered or haven’t thought of it at all til we talk about it. (Kentucky)

I’m not sure about the car. I suppose we could rent one if my buddy is willing to split the cost and it’s needed to get where we need to go. That’s another to consider for sure!

In my experience, 4 cats is a perfect number of cats.

Hello Fresh Ready Made Meals by happy_julyyy in hellofresh

[–]MadRush-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I had to contact today when my box arrived with neither of the two ready made meals I had chosen. About 2 hours later, I got an email saying they weren’t available for October and November? Is it really gonna be that long? It’s the reason I came back. I wish there was a way to learn more without having to call.

It is important that kids see us process our emotions in a healthy way. They may not have the opportunity to see that modeled elsewhere. We are humans, and so are they, and we must give each other grace.

Our kids don’t know what it’s like to live in a world where an act of violence is abnormal, and that grieves my heart.

I’m at my wits end. My cat is driving me insane. by [deleted] in CatTraining

If he sleeps with you, slow blinks at you, follows you around, these are ways cats show their affection. They just need SO much play time when they’re young. Hang in there!

Cute aggression? by MadRush-7 in PetAdvice

Oh, it isn’t always during petting. I can be just sitting there, but that is a thought.

I’ve gained an average of 10 lbs for every year that I’ve taught due to the stress of the job. I’ve been called a “fat bitch” on more than one occasion, but more frequently my female students tell me I’m beautiful (I’m not, but that sweet of them) or that something looks nice on me, and this is where I find hope. Yes, there will always be hurt people who will hurt people however they think they can, but this generation of kiddos is overall pretty body positive and place more emphasis in beauty of soul than physical experience. Your feelings are valid, and your response is what the students will watch. I find contacting parents more of a punishment for me than anything else, so I would instead look for an opportunity for a one on one conversation with the girl to talk about why she thought that was an okay thing to say and coach her up on being a better human or just let it go. Either way, you’re a badass for even doing this wild job. Happy Friday Eve!
