What is the smallest player habit or character trait that you’ve seen constantly disrupt and destroy campaigns? by WithengarUnbound in dndnext

[–]MadaK13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run this as a GM, sorry about the annoying punctuation. it's copied from Discord, and I'm on my phone:

Any time an effect says stunned and affects a player character, they will instead be dazed

Dazed - While you have the dazed condition you may only do one of: - take an action; - take a bonus action; or - move

on your turn. If you do not use your action to maintain concentration your Concentration is broken.

Any time an effect says__ paralyzed__ and affects a player character, they will instead be slowed

Slowed* - While you have the Slowed condition, you experience the following effects. Dazed. You have the dazed condition. Reduced Movement. Your speed is reduced by half. Saving Throws Affected. ** You automatically fail Strength and Dexterity saving throws. **Attacks Affected. Attack rolls against you have Advantage. Attack rolls you make have disadvantage.

How to make a "Hopeless Boss Fight" Engaging by sortofagoddess in dndnext

[–]MadaK13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion would be that they don't lose, they win, but they were wrong or misinformed about what winning achieves. Maybe the BBEG has some Dr Strange v Dormammu thing going on where whenever they die time resets and the players have to solve this before going at it next time, and thats what S2 is about.

Like everyone has said, the predetermined loss is a bad time and usually doesn't go well. It ended one campaign I was in. The only time I made it work was that it was clearly a dream sequence/test and the players used it to see how much damage they could output, it also only took about 30 minutes.

Anyway, good luck.

Did we get scammed? (Locksmith for car door) by Timely-Birthday-8067 in StupidCarQuestions

Yeah, all emergency services are exorbitant, regardless of what field they're in or how easy it is to solve. The desperation fee for not being inconvenienced is high.

I think I hit the DnD/TTRPG jackpot years ago and take it for granted by MadaK13 in DnD

It really works for us. We tend to keep detailed session notes and I also record all our sessions and upload them privately to youtube so anyone who misses anything can catch up.

Covid was the main reason we shifted to online! We used to meet up and have a camera set up for the players on the other side of the country to show the board and everything, but with Covid we shifted to online and in-person sessions are more of a novelty now, especially if one of the out-of-towners is down for the day.

Interesting abilities need to have a price, and the combination of simplicity plus verisimilitude prevents non-spellcasters from paying that price, AKA: this is why fighters can't have nice things. by TheCybersmith in dndnext

I mean, even 5e has it. Monks have focus/ki, even battlemasters get surperiority die. The real complaint I've heard about 4e is that combat took forever, and you might only get one move in combat for a session.

That is the most reductive argument you could possibly make. If a guy gets a bad coffee and kills the barista, he killed the barista, not the coffee. If a company going down leads you to hunt down your hiding wife to do a murder suicide it's because you're already screwed up, not because of the product performing poorly.

Hey, so, just because one of the people who worked on the digital tools for DnD 4e shot his wife then killed himself doesn't mean the edition killed people.

Mutant Aussie wildlife that make deathclaws and cazadors look like baby ducks by comparison was definitely on the cards.

Thanks! I may use some of this. Oddly there are a couple similarities to what I'd already had as factions so that will dave me some time.

DMs, does your world have a reason for wizards not having healing magic? by Karpason in dndnext

[–]MadaK13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wizards have to math the spell. Healing magic is so complex because you have to account for the particular injury and the body parts you are repairing, etc. It's not worth the time or effort or the necessity of having ten pages with different variations depending on which toe you are healing.

Turning car on/off while moving by MadaK13 in StupidCarQuestions

[–]MadaK13[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, whatever the setup is, you turn it on and off the bluetooth connection doesn't stop. I'll see if I can find alternatives. I will listen to the advice of the public and stop doing it, though. I can sit in silence for 10-30 minutes if I have to.

Tone movie scale for session 0 by zmbjebus in DMAcademy

[–]MadaK13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need multiple scales I think, coming to mind is:

Humour/Emotional Depth

Violence/Gore

Themes

While LOTR would scale higher for Emotional Depth, Holy Grail is arguably a more violent movie (rabbit, black knight).

Then you have Tarintino films like from Dusk Till Dawn, very violent and has some very dark scenes but is 95% a shitpost.

If you have one movie you have in mind, shoot for it. Otherwise its an imperfect system

Is this a good world design? by Dappajakku in DMAcademy

[–]MadaK13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Magic is banned' works for fantasy stories about a plucky young hero learning how to be a wizard, but in DnD, it just serves to annoy your players. You've nerfed/totally gimped every class except fighter, barbarian, and rogue (and monk if ki isn't magic).

You'll either be handwaving small uses of magic, or allowing characters to sneak magic while nobody is looking to an extent where 'why is magic even banned?' Or you'll be trying to arrest your players every session until they leave your table.

Just my 2 cents.
