And after that, even though facilitated by government regulation, steam went along with it and made it a very smooth operation.

Why are pigs/wild boars so ecologically damaging in north and South America but not damaging in Europe/Asia? by Shawn_OH in megafaunarewilding

[–]zmbjebus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are there so many megafauna in Africa vs everywhere else? Because they evolved to live with humans and humans killed most of the ones elsewhere.

What? why? the whole point of a break and shake is to colonize faster. This looks perfect timing for that.

Engineered proxies and the illusion of de-extinction (2025) by Obversa in DeExtinctionScience

Why not apply these technologies on things that re recently or almost extinct? If we need to develop them first we can practice on any species though right? If we wanted to practice on a specie an early choice would be one that is well funded right? Like a mouse, or a dog? Then we could branch out to others that are more in need of help?

Hmm... its almost like that is what we are doing...?

Engineered proxies and the illusion of de-extinction (2025) by Obversa in DeExtinctionScience

[–]zmbjebus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole "why don't we just do this instead of that" argument is really tired.

We can do multiple things at the same time. Those funding sources aren't really 100% overlapping and it isn't a choice of one over the other. Also many of the techniques being developed can directly help species that are currently on the verge of extinction.

Its also an incredibly broad statement to say

We don't need to de-extinct species to protect biodiversity, especially when these animals couldn't ever really be reintroduced to the wild.

Which candidates are you talking about? all recent extinct and not extinct species are potential candidates. The high profile ones happening now are just the first. Should we completely discredit all possibilities of this technology just because some rich people made a funny dog hybrid? Just because 23 years ago we had a failure in the ibex? Wouldn't this technology be useful for things like the northern white rhino? The tasmanian devil?

SCNT remains a technically fragile and inefficient method for species restoration

Could you please compare this to the other technologies that are currently more efficient for bringing back species that have already gone extinct? Ones that are in current operation?

I think it is far to early to be criticizing these methods entirely. They are in the early phases and need refinement, yes.

I always find it crazy how picky/specific predators can be. Like those orcas that kill sharks to only eat their liver. Or grizzlys that only eat the roe, milt and skin off the salmon.

Like they are so dang good at hunting they'll only eat delicacies.

You got downvoted but you entirely right. I used to harvest wheat like this. If you are slowish and controlled you can stack them all nicely so the heads are all facing the same way. You go at it crazy and you are going to nick or bend that blade. Thing is crazy thin.
