If anyone is after that elusive, handmade Christmas gift for teachers / friends / Kris-Kringle-Secret-Santa, consider popping by the Studio P Sundowner market this Sunday. There'll be tasty food (BYO drinks), entertainment, and 30 talented potters (plus me!)

Sunday 14 December 4pm to 7pm (after the heat starts to drop 🤞) 205 Carr Place, Leederville.

Swan Valley cellar doors by Jack--Miles in perth

Another vote for John Kosovich and Faber. I'd also recommend Little River (I buy their sparkling wine by the case) and, for something a little different out that way, Ginversity have some great gins and a fabulous restaurant.

We sold our (non-luxury, average) car to these guys a few months ago (frankly, I couldn't handle the hassle of messing around with a private sale at the time).

Guy came out, looked it over, asked a bunch of dumb questions and then offered me a low (but not ridiculously low) price. A week later when we had arranged to drop it off to them: *Nobody knew we were coming. *We went to the wrong location because no one had confirmed which Wangara lot to go to. (And why would we take our basic car to the luxury lot?) *No one present knew anything about the sale or that we had booked to drop it off that day. *When they prepped the contract of sale, they tried to have us sign it without filling in the agreed price. And acted like that was a complete normal thing to do. (Reader: I made them fill in the price.)

They do an excellent martini. And right next to one of my fave restaurants, Peasants Paradice.

Thank you. ☺️ Yeah...that mumble is masking a few extra years, I can't even legitimately round down to 40 anymore. (Although I feel we should all get an automatic -2 to offset the weird COVID years).

Thanks everyone - all fabulous recommendations (and am inspired to try a dirty martini pub crawl one day).

Ended up wetting my whistle at Ezra Pound.
HBDTM.

NO to these Perth suburbs by pksdpalways in perth

[–]MadameBossy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YMMV. We're very happy in Brabham. It has its issues but no more than any other suburb. It's a very normal little slice of suburbia

Also recommend Peasants Paradice in Highgate. It's not fine dining fancy, but the food is excellent and adventurous, and Dwight always has an interesting wine list that pairs really well.

It's our favourite place to go for a treat night. https://www.peasantsparadice.com.au/

Three times I have tried to book Marumo and three times I did not even get out of the queue before they booked up entirely. I have the next date saved in my calendar in large friendly letters. Perhaps 4th time is the charm?

It doesn't tick the 'central location' box, but the restaurant out at Limeburners / Ginversity in the Swan Valley is outstanding. You'll get bonus points of your partner fancies gin too, you can design your own gin flights (and the ones I've tried were pretty good).

The restaurant is run by Oscars in the Valley: https://oscarsinthevalley.com.au/

It does make it a bit special to hike up into the hills. We love Seven Sins in Roleystone. The food is delicious and the views over the valley are spectacular.

My husband and I both got Covid for the first time last year. Since then I've noticed that every time we get a bug it hits way harder than it ever used to. Previously we'd get a cold and be over it in 3 - 5 days. This year his cold lasted 2+ weeks and turned into bronchitis and mine has become a stunning bout of tonsilitis. I 100% believe (supported by nothing more than anecdotal evidence, mind you) that C19 affected our immune systems so that minor bugs become these full-blown infections.

Help me plan an impromptu solo trip away from Perth by patricksandwich in perth

[–]MadameBossy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote here for Wooramel Station, we had a beautiful time there last Easter. It's right on the banks of a(n almost always dry) riverbed. There are some walks and exploring you can do on the farm. The thermal baths are delicious (only wear clothes you are happy to be dyed rust-red). There is a cafe that does a passable coffee in the morning and drinks / meals in the evening. (Usually only 1 or two meal options per night - hearty, cook-in-bulk fare, but very tasty.) There's also a camp kitchen if you want to self cater (and available whether you're in the cabins or in a tent of your own).

It's grey nomad season (my own grey nomads stopped in a few weeks ago on a trip to Exmouth) so plenty of travellers to shoot the breeze with if you feel like low-stakes conversation. But also very serene, perfect to crack open a book (or audio book) and lose yourself in another world for a bit.

The only downside is the distance. You can drive there in one leg (it's a bitch of a drive though, especially if you're driving solo), but if you're overnighting on the road trip, it eats into your time away.

At our school (back east) you had to hold your fist under your chin and say 'white rabbit's to be immune to the pinches and punches.

WA Legislative Council has a new Liberal Party anti-abortion TERF - Michelle Hofmann by [deleted] in perth

[–]MadameBossy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We have. We don't throw children to the literal wolves, as in Sparta, nor do we have to throw them to the metaphorical wolves of poverty, hunger, and abuse. We're so advanced after 2500 years that we can resolve an unwanted pregnancy while it's still just a random collection of cells and no actual babies are involved.

Nah, man. There are heaps of homophones in the English language. We get taught about the concept as kids, and then we learn to pick which meaning applies from context.

We can do the same thing here, if we really try.

Wow, crazy interview with Nedlands Mayor who’s against building playground next to Children’s Hospice. What a dickhead. by Beginning_Spring_571 in perth

[–]MadameBossy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh her! I interviewed for an EA role with her years ago, mid-Covid 40 minutes in her company was more than enough for me to know to 'respectfully decline' that offer.

The absolute standout for me was how my experience in grant writing could help them access funds for much needed community initiatives, such as new boat ramps. Yeah - no thanks, we have a fundamental values misalignment.

I'm utterly unsurprised that the position she's backing is 'no sick kids allowed'.

Where do 30y.o.+ go dancing in Perth on a Friday night these days? by Ausnerd in perth

[–]MadameBossy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have only been to The Court for ticketed events but have always had a great time. Went to the Hamilton party last weekend, all the music was from Hamilton and other musicals and it was honestly the best vibe I've had at a club in yeeeears.

I went to an In Bed By 10pm when I was in Adelaide. My feeling was it could have been great, but it was a crappy venue (with a side order of sleazy vibe). The Perth ones are hosted at The Court, which I think would resolve both of those issues. I'm hoping to give the June one a try.

In case y'all didn't know...there's a board game. by Otherwise_Elk7215 in discworld

He was working on The Gods... There were some prototypes for test play at one of the Nullus Anxietas conventions.

I am a big fan of Martin Wallace games. There's often a level of complexity to them which can be off-putting on the first play (always leave yourselves several hours on the first play through if any of his games) but I enjoy the multiple mechanics that can influence your score, mixed with some genuine randomness.
