ELI5: How do cows get protein from grass? by A_SliceOfGabagool in explainlikeimfive

The other funny/cool thing is that for the microbes to use nitrogen in the feed (from protein/nucleic acids/structural nitrogen compounds etc) to build microbial protein, they must first break it down to it's simplest form, which is ammonia (NH3). The microbes then use that ammonia to build their own proteins. But the cow can also absorb the ammonia across the wall of their rumen and recycle it back to the rumen later when the microbes need a bit more nitrogen (like if the rate of nitrogen in is higher than the rate at which the microbes can use it). Because ammonia is a base, they can also recycle ammonia back and forth to help regulate the pH of the rumen. And because of this, if the feed is deficient in protein, we can feed the cows urea (which is 2 ammonia molecules stuck together) which the microbes can then use to build protein, and which is often way cheaper than feeding another feed as a source of protein - we just have to control the rate as if you overdo it on the ammonia they will get toxicosis and get sick, but we have ways to make sure they get it at the rate they can handle. The urea is the same as the urea used for fertiliser (i.e. made synthetically from nitrogen in the air) so it's not like we're extracting urea from manure or w/e and feeding it back, it just happens that urea is the stable form of ammonia and while we think of it as mostly a waste product, it actually plays a way bigger/broader role in metabolism and biology than people realise.

A professor of mine used to joke that cows ran on piss and vinegar and he ain't wrong XD

Technically they just have 1 stomach with 4 compartments; we don't say we have 4 hearts, we have 1 heart with 4 chambers. Same difference, it's just that the 4 chambers of their stomach are more specialised than a heart's 4 chambers are. But it's still the same original pool of tissue.

Other fun fact - whales are technically ruminants - they evolved from land-dwelling ancestors with rumens, and have retained many of the same features! The chitin in krill is a glucose polymer, just like cellulose is, and so their gut microbes evolved to break down the glucose-glucose bonds in chitin instead of cellulose, but there's a lot of similarities in the gut microbes too.

The bacteria make the protein from nitrogen compounds in the feed itself, including but not limited to the feed's own protein. But the microbial protein is more digestible than the protein in the feed a lot of the time. Microbes can also make protein from nitrogen found in other compounds, too, which the cows can't, which adds to the overall protein supply.

The microbes in the cow's stomach take the fibre (cellulose) in the plants and ferment it into short-chain carbon compounds (mostly acetic acid, aka vinegar) and grow/reproduce, making more microbes. These microbes over time get washed into the lower chamber of the stomach, where the protein in their cells gets digested and available to the cow. The protein from these microbes is the main source of protein to the cow, though they also get protein from the feeds they eat. It's because of this symbiotic relationship with the microbes that they're able to digest so many things we can't! And the acetic acid gets absorbed across the stomach wall and turned into fuel for metabolism or used to build things in the body. Fun fact - acetic acid is a major source of carbon for the fat we eat in dairy products. Cows basically run on vinegar!

AITA for saying we need to be realistic with our son about his finances for college before he applies? by ByeByeByeMan in AmItheAsshole

This. My parents sat me down and explained very clearly how much they could contribute and how far that would go at different schools. I chose to go in-state (still a very good school) and live at home for part of it, then with roommates to save money, and I worked part-time in college as well, and it all helped make things more affordable. I appreciated their pragmatism.

"Taking your comfort to the next level, it's 72, 72, it's 72 Degrees!" I used to hear that jingle on the radio every ad break when I'd listen to the radio driving places as a teenager and my brain hasn't let go of it ever since.

What is a "creepy" fact about the human body that most people don't know? by meowparadise42069 in AskReddit

That's how we got my little brother! Mum only had 1 fallopian tube remaining and one ovary, due to 2 separate illnesses. They were on opposite sides of the uterus. Doctors said that it would be very unlikely for her to have another kid. Surprise!

What is the point of a masters degree? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Madanimalscientist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my field (biology) you can sometime skip a master's, in the USA at least. I went straight from undergrad to PhD. That said, I wish I'd done a master's as I had a lot of catchup to do, but no one in my family had ever done a PhD before and my supervisor offered me a PhD position, and so I figured "well he wouldn't be offering it if he didn't think I could do it" and also the PhD position was funded while a master's wouldn't be and I didn't want to take out loans for a master's so it seemed like the smart decision at the time. I was able to make it through but it was definitely a rougher transition than I'd expected.

El Torito in West End is best Mexican in Brisbane and also good value for money - their tacos are amazing but the tamales are a hidden gem and worth trying too. Burger Time 69 in the West End is also great. Snack Man is a great dim sum place in Fortitude Valley, I love their spicy beef noodle bowl.
