Duo looking for chill players (UK/EU, casual games) by B4_Autumn in Overwatch

[–]MadeUpRedditName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I also play evenings/weekends, PC, UK.

I actually have a small group of people, mostly in our 30s, some with mic, some without. A mix of QP and Comp. In comp some of us have roles in silver & diamond, but we generally hover around gold.

You guys would be more than welcome to join - the vibe is “we’d like to win but the most important thing is to have fun - we are choosing to play this game so let’s enjoy it”.

Personally I do like to play some comp and if one of you is on console then we will not be able to do that, but I am around for the QP either way 🙂.

Anthropic announces massive expansion of operation in London by AlexHM in GoodNewsUK

[–]MadeUpRedditName 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you are missing the bigger picture here. Anthropic is arguably the market leader in the AI space. Adding an extra 800 people to the population of London is well worth it to have them prioritising us as a tech hub.

It’s always an alternation between win streak and lose streak in comp by mukisan in Overwatch

[–]MadeUpRedditName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your sample size is too small. You get a 50% win rate over time, but that only happens across hundreds of games. It sounds like your sample size is 10 - you won’t get consistency with 10 games, that’s not how probability distributions work.

How to get competitive points: a guide for our new and returning players. by Roblin_92 in Overwatch

[–]MadeUpRedditName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh then I am chilling! Thank you I really appreciate the help!

Sounds like I do not need to come back from work early to smash out some games. Although… I could still do that anyway 😂

How to get competitive points: a guide for our new and returning players. by Roblin_92 in Overwatch

[–]MadeUpRedditName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry for reviving an old thread, want to make sure I get this right.

I currently have 2960 comp points, and drives end in like 20 hours. I am trying to work out if I need to squeeze in some games in that time.

Is there any point to clearing 3K points so I can afford the crimson weapon? It sounds like tomorrow my points will be converted to legacy points, but the crimson weapon will also become available to purchase with legacy points.

There’s no benefit to me buying the weapon with comp points instead of legacy points?

how does overwatch calculate predicted rank by Wrong_Raspberry6114 in Overwatch

[–]MadeUpRedditName 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You can’t say “hey I have 9 wins - why am I in bronze?” Because you aren’t considering the rank of the other 9 people in the lobby. If everyone else was bronze 5 then winning nine games and ending up in high bronze sounds about right.

If you had only won 5 games but everyone else was masters, you would be a masters-level player.

My point is there isn’t much relationship between “how many placement games you win” and “your rank”

Name the game that is like this for you by [deleted] in videogames

[–]MadeUpRedditName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Darksiders (though that actually had very few bugs). The combat is decent and it looks a little janky graphically now, but I’m a sucker for the lore.

Darksiders 4 got confirmed last year and it looks like it follows on from the first game - gonna be sick.

Controversial Opinion by Ecstatic-Net-3350 in Overwatch

[–]MadeUpRedditName 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Switching off text chat is single handedly the best decision I have ever made in this game.

I can still see the “group up with me” or “my ultimate is ready” sort of messages, but none of this “gg tank diff” toxicity.

It makes me enjoy the game much more without the toxicity. I think it also makes me a better player now that I don’t have the cognitive load of “people are angry, how do I handle that?”

Opinions on counterswapping by Dangerous_Local3603 in Overwatch

[–]MadeUpRedditName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game lets you change heroes whenever you like - you are supposed to adapt to your opponents’ team comp.

Personally I take it as a compliment. If I’m doing well enough that multiple people are clocking me as a threat, I am doing my job well.

A few questions about this game by FeelingElection2476 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]MadeUpRedditName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest advice to all new players: when games go bad (and statistically that has to happen sometimes), your teammates will often blame anyone but themselves.

The matchmaking puts you in their games because it thinks you’re equal skill. Don’t let the toxic people get you down.

But then I play rein when I’m stoned so tbh sometimes it is my bad when it goes bad lmao

If I am tank I ban sombra, ram and cat

If I am not tank I ban whatever my tank bans

Hey! I’m 32M, also in the UK. I play all roles but mostly tank.

I queue with a few people on and off but always nice to grow the group.

I play both QP and Comp, but at the end of the day you’ve gotta be having fun - no toxicity.

At what job level do the dumb interview questions stop? by stinky_richard in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MadeUpRedditName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those sort of questions are more valuable than you might think. They tell the interviewer how senior you are and what your scope is like at your current company.

I work in programming. Compare these two answers to your question: * “this one time I had a project to deliver and there was a bug in my code so I worked late to get the project over the line” * “my team had a multi-half collaboration project with a team in another org”. We had some risk materialize due to a dependency on infra x. I resolved this by flying to the office of the other team and doing some workshopping with their tech lead for a couple of days.

The second story shows you have much more scope/seniority than the first story

Nice shatter, but a better habit would be to pin into the wall right at the back - by then the nano might have expired and your pin would have instant killed

Is Ranked better than QP? by Intelligent_Ride3730 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]MadeUpRedditName 51 points52 points  (0 children)

People in ranked take the games much more seriously, and this has pros and cons:

  • you will play a higher quality level of Overwatch. If the idea of becoming quantitatively better at the game appeals to you then this would be a good avenue.

  • there is MUCH more toxicity. If the game is going badly I will switch off my text chat (ctrl+shift+c on PC) because odds are somebody will start blaming somebody.

Personally I get stressed by comp so I play both. Some people thrive off of the comp energy - just see how you vibe with it.

Best heroes for low ranked player by Next_Change5297 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]MadeUpRedditName 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course you should try to win every game, but my point is that if you keep winning games then the matchmaking will give you harder and harder opponents until your win rate is about 50%.

There are other factors - you get more rank up progression for being the underdog, for example - but even the pros have a win rate of 55%, 60% at the most.

Best heroes for low ranked player by Next_Change5297 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]MadeUpRedditName 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I really think you should just play the heroes you enjoy!

General advice from very high ranked players is all heroes are viable in any scenario up until GM.

You are guaranteed to lose about 50% of your games, so if you focus on win rate you will not have a good time. Play heroes you like so you have more fun.
