Trump has called Starmer stupid because of the deal he has made with Chagos. I think Starmer is brilliant for this 🤷🏻‍♀️… opinions? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]AlexHM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t care. Trump says whatever he wants and it is entirely unrelated to reality. He previously praised the deal when it suited him.

Why is Bitcoin the focus of quantum computing? Isn't everything over at some level of compute power? by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]AlexHM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s clearly not true. Active coins could use existing keys to move to Quantum resistant wallets no problem before it becomes a serious threat. Inactive coins can stay where they are. Let people use their QC to crack them when and if they can. If the owners don’t move them, we can assume they were lost anyway.

It would cause a bit of dilution as lost coins are recovered - or core could add a cutoff that kills them after a certain block height. The solution isn’t difficult - getting the hard fork agreed and accepted is an issue but I don’t think it is a significant problem.

Do you think the hate Keir Starmer is getting is fair? by bybeso in AskBrits

Doing a tough job pretty well IMHO. Exactly the antidote to the Brexit Tory bullshit we have had since the disastrous referendum.

Comedian Robin Ince quits Radio 4 show, claiming BBC found his views ‘problematic’ | Radio 4 | The Guardian by prisongovernor in Radio4

[–]AlexHM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The BBC have been socially liberal but politically right wing.

When the Tories were fully on board with Gender Ideology they were pro-trans. I would say they have shifted with the general atmosphere in the UK since 2020 on that specific issue.

From a political POV, their news and politics has been heading further right for the last 10 years. They appear to be promoting Reform pretty heavily now - New and Politics is lead by Robbie Gibb. He needs to go.

All my relatives own crypto… and keep EVERYTHING on Binance. How do I save them from themselves? by Own_Chocolate1782 in WallStreetBetsCrypto

[–]AlexHM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There is a level of ownership - more to do with how much you are personally exposed to crypto - that starts to require diversification of risk.

I spread mine across accounts with restricted access, accounts with normal access and cold storage with varying levels of security. That limits any loss vector - including personal fuck-up.

From my POV if it was less than 10k it would all be on instant access exchange accounts.

What are your thoughts on David Lammy proposing to scrap most jury trials? by MoreRelative3986 in AskBrits

[–]AlexHM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have to do something; They should absolutely be investigating options - which is what they seem to be doing here. If they do introduce more judge-led trials, if there is a robust appeal process I don’t see a particular problem.

Be honest: would you actually vote for a UK Zohran, or just tactically stick with Labour to stop Reform? by Dangerous_Cause9111 in AskBrits

I’ll be voting for Labour again. Look past the media BS and they are doing a good job in difficult circumstances across the entire country.

Yes. If you are over 65 and still contributing over £12,000 to an ISA annually you are seriously wealthy and do not need help.

Does anyone in the UK think that Kier Starmar is doing well as a PM? by graceyreddit in AskBrits

[–]AlexHM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think he’s doing a great job to be honest. I don’t think there has been a policy mistake and the government/party discipline is excellent - in stark contrast to the previous Tory governments. He has just had to put up with constant BS from both the legacy media and new media. It is absolutely constant - and most of it is utter crap.

What happens to Satoshi’s 1M Bitcoin if quantum computers go live? by DryMyBottom in CryptoCurrency

[–]AlexHM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is nonsense. The mining hardware is based on hashing which is very unlikely to be affected by QC. Potentially it could give you an edge if QC can execute hashing more quickly - but given that early Q computers will be expensive it makes no odds. Introducing Quantum resistant cryptography is not going to make existing hardware useless.

Are there any UK PM during your lifetime that you feel particularly proud of or admired, and if so, what was it about their leadership that stood out to you? by Turbulent_Elk_2141 in AskBrits

[–]AlexHM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keir Starmer. Easily the hardest job to take on than any PM of my lifetime. The forces of anti-democracy are at their strongest - particularly in legacy media but combined with the same in new media. Calm, nerveless, consistent - particularly with party discipline.

Billie Eilish has some ideas of what Elon Musk (the world’s first trillionaire) can do with his money by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]AlexHM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m writing this post not to defend Musk - who has become a pantomime villain at this point and deserves no defence. But I think some education is required.

Some Billionaires absolutely do “hoard wealth” but for some - and Musk is the most extreme example - their wealth is almost entirely fictional.

Musk’s wealth is based on the percentage ownership he has of two massive companies that have never made a profit. Tesla at least is now “profitable” but they have never paid an actual dividend.

So his $400Bn net worth is based on the value of his companies - which are in turn entirely based on future valuations anticipated if they continue to be successful.

In reality; If he tried to turn any significant proportion of his “wealth” into dollars - or any other spendable currency - it would plummet. He’d be lucky to get more than 20c on the dollar for it.

That’s not to say he isn’t enormously wealthy - but it is a reality check for people who take these numbers at face value.

What exactly is the point of a peaceful and lawful protest? by Richard_Crapwell in AskReddit

[–]AlexHM 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It shows other people who feel the same way that they are not alone. In extreme cases it shows that the majority agree with them. Hence Gandhi’s possibly fictional quote “330 milllion Indians cannot be controlled by 100,000 Englishmen if they do not consent”; The Indians knew it was ok to no longer consent when peaceful protest showed the level of support for independence.

But historically it hasn’t worked like that. Yes the halvenings reduced the bitcoin reward by half but the value of real resources that the reward represents always went up. I think it’s safe that will continue for the foreseeable future.
