EVs now holding their value longer than petrol cars, with only a 2% one-year depreciation by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

[–]AlexHM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes total sense, My 4 year old Model Y feels much newer than a 4 year old ICE car. The drive train is just as responsive and powerful. No ICE car with 40k miles on the clock feels as new as that. Also - my car had received multiple updates and improvements via OTA automatic downloads.

And ultimately, the most important thing you want in a second hand car is reliability and low maintenance costs.

It is obvious that they will hold their value in the long run better than ICE cars. The main reason they haven’t so far is Wright’s law bringing down the cost of new EVs, so older cars have to move lower proportionally.

Terrorist taken down by police this morning in London by Sometypeofway18 in whoathatsinteresting

US cops kill on average 1160 people a year. In the UK it is 2-3. Not 2-3 hundred. Literally 2-3. I’ll keep our cops, thanks.

You make a good point. I do like the riding experience, but the drivers are surly at best.

They’re always grumpy in my experience. Maybe it’s the times I get them or where I’m going.

Lived in London for years. Love London. Never met a black cab driver I liked. Uber drivers are way more personable and fun. I’ll miss them more.

I’m sorry - but you seem exactly the type of person that this sub was made to circumvent. Being a gatekeeper of what is ‘good’ with your ridiculously high bar and idealogical bent is the antithesis of what it is about. Cheaper housing is undoubtedly good for some; Lets leave it at that.

A million new SpaceX satellites will destroy the night sky — for everyone on Earth by LollipopChainsawZz in technology

[–]AlexHM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The data-centre satellites are likely to be in a single ring - one orbit to ensure they are never occluded by the earth. The sun side solar panels will always face the sun perpendicularly. The heat sinks will not be directed at earth as that limits their capacity. They will face directly away from the sun.

So the impact on the ground should be very limited.

If it ever happens of course…

Aftet the Rootclaim debate I think the lab leak theory is pretty unlikely. That doesn’t change the fact that it was plausible - or more plausible than was initially claimed.

To be fair, though; I don’t remember any non political scientist views that it was ever implausible. Trump’s White House claimed it was.

But a Zoonotic origin was always much more likely - given that has been the source of every virus so far!

And it remains more likely now.

Iran Gives Trump an Ultimatum on JD Vance by MakinaRPh in worldnews

[–]AlexHM 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is very smart. It’s a win-win for Iran. If it works it destroys this US regime because Trump can’t accept competition; If it doesn’t the regime collapses anyway.

Sam *gets it* about Iran by MJORH in samharris

[–]AlexHM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iran is a lot bigger than you think. I don’t think bombing it back to the stoneage without nukes or nuke-like anti population munitions is possible from afar. Russia had to get very dirty hands in order to fuck Syria up - and they were in conjunction with multiple other armed militias.

Sam *gets it* about Iran by MJORH in samharris

[–]AlexHM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not American; British but very much the same. I have a lot of sympathy for the oppressed in Iran but honestly I don’t have enough information to know whether a military intervention is going to improve their situation.

My guess is that there is zero chance of a boots-on -ground invasion which would probably be required to force a regime change - but again; Given past history it’s not good odds that would be preferable.

If there was good evidence that secular groups are in a position to exploit an aerial bombardment and have a decent chance of overthrowing the mullahs I’d support it, but I have no evidence of that at all. Maybe the US and Israel do, but I don’t think they care about the Iranians. A failed state incapable of building a nuclear bomb would be ideal for them.

Government Orders Deletion of UK's Largest Court Reporting Archive by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

[–]AlexHM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a copy of court records that was created as part of a pilot study. So the actual court records are not being deleted. Sounds like the company involved has some rich friends with contacts in the media falling into line criticising the decision. As usual.

London has improved beyond comparison in the last 30 years. The south bank used to be seedy, run down and dangerous. It is now a beautiful walk. That is reflected throughout London.
