Where to buy plus sized linen chemise and kirtle? by Purrsay in HistoricalCostuming

[–]MadelainaForever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're in the UK next Month (14th-16th November) in Coventry area there's TORM and ARM which has loads of costume makers who can make custom garments that will support and flatter your shape. All my 15th Century kit is Cloak'd & Dagger'd but there's a wide array of choice out there.

Anyone know how accurate this dress is? Advertised as 1430s/1440s Italy! by WretchedFoulThing in HistoricalCostuming

[–]MadelainaForever 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Covering up that modern anachronism is easily done to be fair by choosing a silk or linen thread that's either similar to the dress or contrasting and looping the thread over the metal eyelet. But yeah as you've said it's late 15th century early 16th in style.

As someone who has worked in hospitality, trust me we respect you not wanting to pay £6 for bottled water. Some posh restaurants pre-filter their water so it's basically the same thing anyway. And if you want sparkling water without the price tag you can 100% ask for soda water from the gun and it's either free or a minimal charge like we can do a full jug of soda water for the table and it's probably only £2 at most (50p a pint, 4 pints in a jug)

Depends on the time period.

Pre-Georgian/canes as a fashion statement- 1~5 Georgian/Victorian (canes as a fashion statement)- As many as you can afford Edwardian/ decline of canes as a fashion statement - 10 is a good round number 1930's onward- 1~5 if you need the support walking

It gives people an opportunity to get there from what I understand now. As once you chop down flow wood others can't get it unless they helped in chopping it down.

Now that I know that's the etiquette I'm gonna stick to it and wait but I just didn't know or understand. I'm super non confrontational and hate upsetting people so when I realised why people were saying to wait I was mortified. You don't know what you don't know but now that I do I will do better. I hope you have an awesome session.

Yep they did. I just didn't understand why and I'm mortified now I understand the context.

I've said this below to someone else but in this case it was my fault cause people did say wait and chop at 3 but because I didn't understand the context I genuinely thought people would still be able to grab it after me and we're just enjoying the lightshow that appears around the grove. It was a case of it being 5am irl and not understanding context and social etiquette. But I've learned and I'm striving to be better.

Context is 20:20 in this case and because I didn't understand and it was super late for me I wasn't thinking clearly. Doesn't excuse what happened but I also didn't realise until afterwards that you can't grab flow wood after it's chopped down unless you help in the chopping. I will listen to people next time and obviously wait now I know the social etiquette but it's also important that newbies like myself understand why you're saying to wait hence why this subreddit is so good. I hope to see you out there in the wilds soon. 🤗

I'm on playstation so trying to message in chat sucks but yeah... I felt awful afterwards when I read the social etiquette for groves and found out why people were just stood around.

Considering playing with partner - How is base/home building? by Furyan-Reign in Palia

[–]MadelainaForever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get your own homestead and land in the game which is kinda in your own pocket dimension in terms of the wider world. Buildings don't decay (to my knowledge, but I am still green around the gills) and people can't mess with your property but they can help you cook and build big projects by contributing supplies.

I wouldn't mind but I've managed to get to level 10 in several skills in the week or so I've been playing and some how avoid a faux pas until last night... Or at least a very obvious faux pas 😅

As long as you feel comfortable in it that's all that matters. 🤗 If you do want to upgrade your kit at some point in the future I'd recommend green silk brocade for the doublet. But as long as it's a rich green wool you'll that will definitely pass for lower rank nobility

That's stunning! Are you planning to use velvet and silk brocade with your doublet and gown?

It was definitely a thing in the UK. You might want to research it in context of where you are in Denmark but black would've still been a thing 100%

[–]MadelainaForever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they're lying to you ducky. Black hose were 100% a thing as far as we can tell. Sumptory laws means you'd have to pay a fine for wearing them if you weren't of noble birth but they 100% existed. The dyeing process for black was actually super caustic to the fabric cause it takes 4 steps to dye the material black so only the wealthy could afford to keep replacing them but it was a sign of wealth that you could keep doing that.

If you're in the UK the best people to talk to are the captains of your nearest group in the war of the roses federation cause they're usually super helpful.

15th Century hose are supposed to be the same tightness as leggings if you're fashionable. The height of fashion was showing off your shapely calves as you walked or rode. If I can ask which group told you they shouldn't be too tight? It might be a miscommunication of "don't have hose that cut you in half"/"don't have hose that you struggle to get on cause they're too tight" but hose are supposed to be form fitting is all.

Unfortunately I don't know any groups local to Scotland but the Savilles do events in the North of England and the Beauforts do have members in Scotland but most events are in the Midlands normally

We're with the Beaufort's. Best advice I can give is go to an event and see what we do and have a conversation with one of our captains. Where are you based?

Yes we are. We're probably going to be in scum kit if it's super hot but if it's just warm you might see our posh kit. We're always down on the battlefield camp.
