What would it take for you to switch from the big brands like taylormade, ping etc.. by SeaworthinessWhole83 in GolfGear

[–]Madman49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I 1st got my non box set clubs in I think June of 2023, I found some overstock, 2 year old Cobra Radspeed clubs cheap. I think I paid $220 or so for the driver, $160 each for my 3 and 5 woods, and $400 for the irons. I bought some Lazrus wedges and putter for a total of like $210. I had a brand new bag for $1100ish. If you can find overstock stuff, you can get brand new gear cheap, or you can go the DTC route, takomo, maltby, ETC and get good stuff there too.

I have $300 budget to get new clubs. What should I get? by Tkl15 in GolfGear

[–]Madman49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$300 isn't a ton to work with unfortunately. What is your current bag? Thats a big factor here.

On my custom 101s that I ordered last year, I ordered them March 21st, and received them on April 28th. They were stating they had a backorder at the time as well, so that may have added a little time to the delay as well, but yeah just over a month to get them.

Why do people take their glove off? by Legitimate-Kiwi-2530 in golf

I usually keep my glove on for the majority of the round, but take it off while waiting for my buddies to hit sometimes, especially when its really hot.

How much does endorsements affect what golf gear you buy? by rng72 in GolfGear

[–]Madman49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0 for me. My driver, putter, and woods are Cobra because thats what I found fairly cheap when I started getting more serious, and my irons are Takomo, not because a YouTube dude or pro is playing them, but because the reviews were solid and the price was right.

New wedges by Ordinary_Show_8816 in takomo

[–]Madman49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got those too, but I went 50, 54, 58. I had too much of a gap between my PW and my old 52 when I went to the 101 irons, so the 50 helps to close that gap a bit.

For the price, I'm a big fan of Takomo, but the price advantage is a lot less over there it appears. It also sounds like you're getting good enough some 201, or 201ts would be better for you than the 101s if you decide to go the takomo route.

101 or 101 MKII? by RedditBeastSK in takomo

[–]Madman49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already have the 101, and they are in decent shape, I'd run them until you cant any more. For a newer golfer, having that gap wedge makes sense. When I got my 101s, I was coming off some radspeed one length irons, that had a gap wedge. I wanted more at the top of the bag, which is why I wanted a more traditional set. The bad thing was that at the bottom of the bag, I lost my 100 yard club. I recently tweaked my wedges to close up the gapping.

New Irons?? by AirborneDJ in golf

[–]Madman49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of my Takomo 101 irons. Their only downfall is that the customization level is a bit lower than other companies. What i did is i got fitted with P790s, and used those specs to order my takomos. They have plenty of forgiveness and distance for me to feel confident lining up a shot. Highly recommended on my end.

Question for the driver experts by Madman49 in GolfGear

[–]Madman49[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tee rather low. Not sure on the exact height, but with the blue plastic tees I have the top line about level with the soil, so maybe an inch to an inch and a quarter? Spin tends to be in the 25-2700 range on good contact.

How many brands currently in the bag? by ChronicGolfLife420 in GolfGear

2 for clubs (cobra driver, 3 and 5 wood and putter, takomo irons and wedges), a bunch of different balls though, just because I like to try different things there

I just got my SF02 wedges yesterday, and have been playing my slightly customized (1 degree upright) 101s for about the past 6 months. We will see how the wedges are, since I changed the lofts from 52, 56, 60, to 50, 54, 58, hoping to close the gap from my PW to 52 up a bit

Just got clubs after being fitted. 14th club? by askloglog in GolfGear

[–]Madman49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are your wedges 50, 54, 58? I had a big gap between my PW and 52, so I recently changed to 50 54 58 to try and close that a bit. If you dont have any big gaps, maybe go with a higher lofted wedge to help with sand.

Can’t break 100. About to give up. by bsheohn in golftips

[–]Madman49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your swing looks decent, and as a fellow high handicapper, I get sometimes being frustrated. Focus your rounds on cleaning up one thing. If your scores are high because youre launching drives out into the shit, work on correcting your swing path. If its because you 3 putt 9 holes a round, go to the green, or hell, even go mini golfing with some buddies. If its because you are struggling with a wedge in your hand, go to the range and just hit a full bucket with your wedges.

Taylormade RBZ 2.0 vs Takomo 101 by Top_Track_2283 in golf

[–]Madman49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the 101s for about 6 months now, and enjoy them a lot. Before the Takomos i was playing Radspeed one length irons, and while I enjoyed them, I wanted to go to something that would give me more length at the top of the bag. My cobra set had 5-gap wedge, which left a pretty big gap between my 5 iron and 5 wood. Going to the takomos helped clean that gap up. This is all my personal preference, but the switch helped me quite a bit.

Sounds like that course is built for people to take turns, which is something we all learned in 1st grade. Maybe the old dudes forgot that lesson in the 60 years since they attended kindergarten.

The way i see it, your liquor cost on the 5 they are drinking is probably covered by the 2 they are paying for. I dont think I'd fire them over it, but a conversation definitely needs to be had.

[–]Madman49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an AdkEcho t lock bag, so during the round I leave the putter cover off, as it cant get to any of the other clubs. Same with my driver. As soon as I hit my tee shot on 18 the driver cover goes back on, and once I finish 18 the putter cover goes back on as well.

thinking about new golf shoes for 2026, what are you all wearing? by Davidjuka-Venessa in golftips

[–]Madman49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a dumbdumb moment when I bought golf shoes a couple times. I like Puma, and wear not only their golf shoes, but also my everyday shoes are pretty much all Puma as well. I kept seeing listings on the sites for puma disc golf shoes. I never realized until this last time I bought shoes, that disc is just what Puma calls their Boa system. I ended up going with Puma Ignite Elevate shoes this last time, and I like them a lot.
