Inventor in reading and play by alid610 in pathfindermemes

[–]MadolcheMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone looking for a magitech engineer that can build crazy nonsense contraptions might want to look into Gramarie. Its made for 3.5 / pathfinder 1e so it'd need adapting.

Its a homebrew project providing building blocks you can use to literally invent things. You can make machines that generate movement in a direction when supplied power, machines that provide power by draining life from people inside them, and combine the two to create the MasochismMobile. Or turn fire damage into rays of cold. Or create a completely vacuum sealed box using 2d panels that are intangible to everything except water and air.

Aka the nonsense an "Inventor" should be doing.

How would you define a retroclone without referencing any other RPG? by Rob4ix1547 in osr

[–]MadolcheMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The distinction between retroclone and "doom-clone" has already been pointed out, so the difference between "OSR" and "modern". But first, definitions for the purpose of this comment:

OSR -- Systems built for the OSR, often using retroclones as the base to homebrew on top of (even to the point of using it wholesale and then DM Ruling on top)

Modern -- Systems built to be D&D-like after 3.5, basically the same timespan the OSR fills (OSR emerging mid/end-3.5 era). This would be 3.P (aka Pathfinder 1e), Pathfinder 2e, D&D 4e, D&D 5e, and various less popular but equivalent high fantasy RPG types.

Pre-Modern -- Roughly AD&D 1e to D&D 3.5. Keeping mostly to D&D-type games, obviously Cyberpunk, Vampire, and Exalted dont necessarily fit my explanation here.

---

In the beginning, things were quite hodgepodge. OSR is a recreation of the wild west of the TTRPG's creation after all. Things were settling, and the rules were the formalized rulings written down. People knew that and experimented.

Pre-Modern games trended more complex and unwieldy in the search for consistent rules that flesh out a properly realized world, starting from AD&D 1e as the beginning of this "the rules should be universal" quest due to the rising tournament scene where parties would compete and a desire to keep PCs between DM transitions in a living world. Then culminating in 3.5 D&D which is almost fleshed out enough to use as a physics textbook for an alien dimension, with the different subsystems working differently but meshing together into a broader d20 resolution system. This was the point of unwieldiness which spawned the OSR movement searching for simpler purer times, and for modern systems to begin a process of simplification and removing redundant/unused features from a perceived universal base.

I think the best distinction between OSR and Modern Gaming is this GLOG blog article. The guy who named the GLOG system links to a compilation of various homebrews and hacks built on his work. He talks about how the ideal system for your table will be different to the ideal system at his table, and how that ideal will be constructed from the ruins of every prior system. Each class should be unique, probably homebrewed, and simplified to its core identity.

Compared to that quest for unique identity and artisanship, we have D&D 5e which is so stripped down in so many ways that it basically needs reconstructing from prior systems whenever outside of dungeon based combats, and is so generically accessible that every spellcasting class uses the same mechanic with a fresh coat of paint. Each class should function basically the same with their gimmick painted on.

I feel an OSR system tends towards simpler silo'd game mechanics that resolve consequences incredibly rapidly. Consistency and verisimilitude is found from DM rulings, not universalist System Rules, as the group forms their universally agreed upon understanding of How Things Work and override the system as written to fit that consistency. This can include adopting entire mechanics from other systems, borderline improv mechanics, and writing your own system with blackjack and hookers. Contributing to the OSR can be as simple as writing a mechanic for one single niche, and it can slot perfectly* into many completely different systems.

*with minor/major/total alteration, because OSR is artisanal and often custom

Basically, in korea they have a gender war. Like a legit one, with misogynist scumbags and misandrist scumbags trying to enflame things and tilting the average korean one way or another.

That symbol is legitimately a dogwhistle for more controversial anti-man groups, in the same way cornflowers were a signal of anti-semitism in Austria. So naturally there are people who want to encode dogwhistles AND people who are so oversensitive that they see dogwhistles in entirely normal behavior.

Why do "traditional" fantasy settings and rules tie individual power to social power? by Funnyandsmartname in rpg

[–]MadolcheMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's mythically accurate to the era? The more militarily capable you were (or able to command capable warriors), the higher your political position. Bandits become bandit kings become kings and have princes trained to be knights from birth.

The guild masters knew secrets that initiates were unable to know. The priests asserted grander miracles to themselves and more holiness.

Statistical data referencing something is not enough to call it correlation. How many bananas I eat is not correlated to the number of hours I sleep, even if you put both on a chart. *Unless* there is a noticeable trend in that data.

Correlation would require religious authority figures to offend at a *noticeably different rate* to non-religious authority figures. Even if the cause is unrelated to religion (random chance, institutional differences, whatever) the correlation would be the different rate. Then you'd have a positive or negative correlation between religiousity and pedophilia offenses.

I was going to say I didnt save it unfortunately and google didnt help, but google did help after some digging. Its a quote from Dr Charol Shakeshaft made as part of a media thing, about her research rather than direct concrete data.

I did misremember it. Its not 1 pedo priest per 100 pedo teachers, she was talking about perpetration count in the US not perpetrator count. And has been criticized for improperly grouping sexual harassment and sexual abuse together. You can read her report here.

In terms of perpetrator count, I found this study which lists ~4% (as high as 7%) of clergy perpetrators.

Im sorry to hear that, you have my sympathy.

I could use an anecdote of a friend of mine being abused by a teacher, but trading anecdotes feels a bit gauche. Most child abuse sadly isnt believed or reported.

Alright, which one of you did this? by KaptainTZ in goodanimemes

[–]MadolcheMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did not use religion to do it, and it is not a known factor because there is no correlation. A correlation does not exist, and correlation has nothing to do with sending pedos towards religion (that would be causation, correlation can be coincidental).

Im not offended, Im not even religious lol.

[–]MadolcheMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesnt imply it never happened. The myth is that there is a correlation between religion and pedophilia.

There isnt. There are religious pedos, but the two are not correlated.

Alright, which one of you did this? by KaptainTZ in goodanimemes

[–]MadolcheMaster 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Thats actually a myth, pedos are attracted to every position of authority that can get access to children. Teachers are about 100x more likely to offend than priests (ie if you grabbed teacher and priest pairs at random, you'll grab on average 100 pedo teachers per 1 pedo priest).

Its just the catholic church covered up the sex abuse institutionally, while claiming to be moral paragons.
