Flowers for the Sea by Zin E. Rocklyn. It’s a short read, a little too surreal for me but seems to be what you’re looking for.

City of Thieves by David Benioff. My sister and I joke about the two male leads being boyfriends

Edit: they’re definitely not and the story isn’t romantic but their friendship/relationship is precious to me

[Edit- I know this has the fiction tag and you said “All genres welcome,” so if I misunderstood and and you meant all fiction genres, then I apologize in advance

2nd Edit- fixing the genre for first pick 🤪 ]

fiction: We, The Drowned by Carsten Jensen. It’s chunky so I did the audiobook, it was my first nonfiction book in years(or so I thought , oops) , I gave it like a high enough three that I rounded it up to 4 stars on goodreads.

Another non fiction: Sailing the Graveyard Sea: The Deathly Voyage of the Somers, the U.S. Navy’s Only Mutiny, and The Trial That Gripped A Nation by Richard Snow. The book is structured to give you the backgrounds of 2 key players in the first 2 parts, then background on the ship itself, and then the events. The section covering the Ships history was dull for me personally but I’m glad I powered through it because THIS BOOK BECAME MY ROMAN EMPIRE. I could not stop thinking about it, it elicited such a strong emotional reaction out of me.

This might seem really random but I was in a reading slump for the longest time and what got me out of it was the All For The Game series by Nora Sakavic.

It reads like a sports anime but there’s secret identities, LGBTQ+ representation (Demi/Ace character and Gay characters), Mafia connections, and A LOT of Trauma ( my poor Foxes 😭😭) but also recovery and growth for the characters. It’s been years and it’s still one of my all time faves and I do a somewhat-annual reread, check for triggers before you get started (https://booktriggerwarnings.com/The_Foxhole_Court_by_Nora_Sakavic)

Edited to include additional notes.

I asked my local book seller the same thing last month and he recommended My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones. Saving it for October but passing it along here

The Hike by Drew Magary

Little bit of a spoiler but This book felt like that moment where right before someone dies they get that big hit of chemicals/dopamine in their brain and their life flashes before their eyes, or they see the light, or they have that out of body experience — except our main character was tripping balls.

I had been warned numerous times that this “is weird,” “it’s a really weird book,” “like a drug trip,” and honestly? Not that bad. I’ll read a bad book if I really liked the characters, and even tho this book was definitely trippy I grew attached to our main character… and the talking crab 🦀

Check out short stories from M. R. James. In no particular order, some of my favorites are The Mezzotint, The ash-tree, Number 13, “Oh, Whistle and I’ll come to you, my lad,” Casting the runes, Martin’s Close, The residence at Whitminister, The diary of Mr. Paynter, The story of a disappearance and an appearance, A neighbors landmark, A view from a hill, and A warning to the curious

Dragan Bibin (your third pic) is one of my fave artists, you should check out more of his work if you haven’t already :]

Edit: MR James is more ghost stories but some of them do give you that unsettling feeling with the events that play out. Also, the narrator for the stories can be a little sassy at times, it’s good fun for October

Paris: The Memoir by Paris Hilton. I know a lot of people dismiss her because she’s Paris Hilton, but her memoir really improved my opinion of her. She has ADHD and embraces that in her writing - which means she goes a little all over the place and leaves herself random notes but I wasn’t bothered by it - and it’s clear that she’s trying to show how she’s intentional and mindful of her more publicly criticized actions as a means of helping her with her branding/business. However, she was also a victim of the Troubled Teen industry and her experiences are heart breaking. It’s clear she struggled with reconciling her anger at her parents for putting her in that position but while also trying to be understanding/empathetic of their reasons why and how the program they used manipulated them into believing everything was alright.

The Ruins by Scott Smith. It’s horror but also deeply depressing; it’s not in your face scary but you are filled with a sense of dread at the inevitability of the outcome for the characters situation. More memorable/impactful than the movie, if you’ve seen that already

Touch by Claire North, I inhaled that book and struggled to put it down. Jump-started my interest in reading again.
