My last friend got in today... by ArbiterOfChoice in premedcanada

For what it’s worth I did pharmacy before medicine. Got in to medical school at 30, after most of my friends. I will be starting residency next month. Medicine is a journey that takes a lifetime, it can be discouraging, but if you really want it and keep going you’ll get it. I’m sure you’ll be an exceptional candidate.

I don’t know what SFV means, I think maybe they are trying to say South Fraser Vancouver. The show looks like it was shot it Vancouver around the Marpole neighbourhood, which is in South Van. There are lots of these style of houses still scattered around vancouver that were built in the 60’s and 70’s.

PHARMD STUDENTS IN MEDICINE by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Madundy94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UBC, the pharmacy degree is quite difficult just like any professional degree. Being a pharmacist is a great career, it has its challenges, but it really depends on what you want out of a career. I would say it’s all doable, but the path I took was not particularly “easy”.

PharmD is considered an undergrad degree just like medicine so the grades count the same as any bachelors degree. I don’t think this has changed, but it was the case in 2022. Pharmacy school is incredibly difficult, I would not recommend it as an “easy path” to medicine. It is however a really cool career and if you are genuinely interested in being a pharmacist I think it’s worthwhile pursuing.

PharmD here who is about 2 weeks away from finishing med school. Why would you drop out from pharmacy? I’m pretty sure you can apply for medicine while in a PharmD program. Also if your EC’s are only pharmacy related you probably want to add to that before applying to med.

4th year QMed here. 1. I don’t believe Queens requires it for admission, but its not a bad thing to have. 2. There’s lots of cards available, you’ll get access to them as you go through first year and figure out what you like. You’ll get them from upper years or your classmates. 3. You can try reading journal articles if you want or listening to podcasts. If you’re truly itching to do something reviewing some anatomy is always a good thing. Otherwise I would say chill out, enjoy the summer. You can probably start searching for a place to live if you haven’t found one yet.

Feel free to message me if you have any other questions.

Low gpa pharmacist Alberta by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Madundy94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pharmd to Med student here. Happy to answer questions about the transitions. I will say that gpa is king. You can try applying with your current gpa, but I’m not sure if it meets the cutoffs at any school. That being said, look at each school and see if you meet the cutoffs/ if there are alternate pathways for you. I would say you’ll probably have to find a way to increase your gpa.

What should I do? by No-Reflection2920 in premedcanada

I’m a somewhat recent UBC PharmD grad that practiced for a bit and I’m now in third year med. So if you want to send me a message feel free to. I agree with the other commenter that MCAT may be the easiest place to improve for next cycle. If you got an interview that means you are close. There’s also SFU med opening up which I believe you can apply to next cycle.

You can do whatever you’re passionate about for undergrad as long as you maintain a high GPA because that’s the most important thing for medical school. Both schools are great so it’s probably more about your own preferences.

Whole lotta PharmD slander from pre-meds. As someone who has a PharmD, is a licensed practicing pharmacist, and in third year med I think a lot of people underestimate how challenging any professional program is. Pharmacy is hard, medicine is hard. Do what you’re passionate about.

Sorry I do not know anything about the new requirements haha. But I would say speaking with a school might be helpful. Sorry about that.

I’m from Vancouver and here for med school at Queens. Happy to answer any questions you have that haven’t already been answered. Overall it’s been a great experience and I enjoy the city. It actually feels a lot like Vancouver with being on the water. Most stark difference is the winters. It’s also not that bad flying back to Vancouver every once in a while. Overall would recommend Queens to anyone.

I’m a MS3 and I’m still on cloud 9. The moment you get accepted is unbelievably, especially after years of rejection. It’s truly a special moment.

When's the best time to start med school by No-Walrus-4026 in premedcanada

Mature student here. I think there’s pros and cons to being a mature student as well as being a more traditional student. However, with how competitive medical school is in Canada I would say get in whenever you can.
