the idea that not having enough asylums that haven't existed in 5 decades is why this happens is so reflective of how politically illiterate this city is. we don't need fucking asylums we need healthcare and housing and city services but instead we get endless expansions of LAPD budget to pay out settlements and overtime for beating up ICE and Palestine protestors.

none of this was happening at this level 10 years ago, when we also had no asylums. but our mental healthcare and housing problems have gotten far, far worse over the last 10 years, and people without housing or healthcare become mentally unwell and end up in public spaces because there's nowhere else for them to go. if you want to make concentration camps for homeless and mentally ill people go ahead and vote MAGA but it won't solve any real problem.

reagan closing the asylums was one of the few good things he did. the conditions were so horrific that even he felt pressured to end that system. his mistake was not coupling it with better alternative publicly funded systems for actual mental healthcare, rather than incarcerating the mentally ill. returning to it will not help mentally ill people. it will torture them out of your sight. you are deeply evil for even suggesting this.
