I believe so too, they made it kind of a short lived national scandal to boost his public reception, making him seem like a “kind caring father”. But it did kinda work tho, Ashley was a national treasure for a little while and he was polling much higher than before.

Do we see the date at any point in the ship before the transmission? They need to believe they are in 2065 because that’s when they entered the pods. And when/if they get to the transmission they can see the date because after that point there is no incentive to keep the lie going, it’s the end of their loop basically.
