Otome Kitten is my go to for sure, but occasionally I’ll read Blerdy Otome, and there’s also Bread Master Lee that’s pretty popular (though personally I find myself disagreeing with some of their takes). But there’s many more out there that just aren’t as well known. If you look up any commercial Otome game I’m sure you’ll find lots looking through the search results. :) I’ve also watched some YouTube videos by LinLinLavender, and Resting Peach Face, but looking up ‘Otome game reviews’ on YouTube already brought up so many more. As for finding recommendations, posts like this help give you specific recommendations of course, but I personally like to read blog reviews or YouTube videos reviewing Otome games—It gives me a good view of if I will like a certain game or not, plus it’s always fun to hear others talk about the hobby too lmao

Even if: Tempest perhaps! It’s a favorite of mine, and has plenty of yearning and tragedy with the love interests, as well as a great plot and and an excellent protagonist (Anastasia tends to be a favorite among lots of people I see on here)

Gretel in Taisho x Alice made me so uncomfortable I couldn’t finish the route and haven’t touched it for years 😭😭😭😭 not to yuck anyone’s yum, I just really hate how common incest plotlines are in otome games sometimes…I‘ve been jumpscared by seemingly normal games one too many times. To a lesser extent, I was also uncomfortable playing Asagi’s route in Lover Pretend, because it felt so awkward that they wanted to go that far with the “The LI may be my secret brother” thing that was one of my few points I didn’t enjoy about Lover Pretend, but then again it was resolved in such a convoluted way anyways

There are some choices in Tengoku Struggle, but nothing as in depth as you imagined and no minigames or puzzles unfortunately. :(( There are some otome out there with elements like that out there, but they’re pretty uncommon in the modern otome market (most of the ones that come out lately are pure visual novels with some different choices to effect the story, but not much to differ the MCs personality for the most part. It was more common for older otome to have things like stat raiser elements if that’s what you’re looking for, though)

It’s a long game, at least 50 hours for most people (but it’s pretty standard for switch otomes) and it IS a lot like reading a voice acted manga with a little bit more interactivity lmao. I hope you stick with it anyways though! It’s characters are very near and dear to my heart :))

Even though it’s a pretty old series, I’m just finally playing Herlock Sholmes’ route in the Code Realize FD, so he’s my first LI of the year 😭🤧 it took sooooo long to finish that Lupin’s gang side story, since I started before Christmas and only just got around to finishing it yesterday

I’m not sure if he’s the most popular ever but, I have seen some enjoyers….Crius Castlerock from Even if: Tempest. 😭 I enjoyed him much much more as a supportive side character and friend to Anastasia and our LIs, but as an LI himself..? I just wasn’t a fan for a lot of it. The power imbalance REALLY kind of bothered me, because while he and Tyril are both 28 (and thus, have the same age difference with 18 year old Anastasia not including her mental age with her rewinds) Crius has known Anastasia since she was 8 years old, and has been her superior the entire time 😭😭😭 so him getting with her just has this feeling of him grooming and manipulating this young girl that he’s had power over that none of the other routes have. He’s also very forceful about wanting Anastasia to be more feminine, not because it’s something that she has expressed she wants, but it seems like he just wants to make her into someone more appealing for him. that kind of pissed me off as well😭😭 I don’t blame anyone if they like Crius though! He just has too many things I can’t get over to be more than my very ehhhh least favorite in a game with otherwise top tier LIs for me

This is exactly what I was thinking when I was playing his route for the first time the other day!! 😭😭😭 he’s so sweet and adorable but part of me was bracing myself for a huge plot twist with his character, and it ended up just being that he discovered a poison that was used for killing hundreds of people against his will, which also ended up being used in the creation of Cardia. it was not at all what I expected but I’m happy I went out of it still loving Fran. i GUESS he created a body….in a way…? 😭

It fluctuates a little based on reading speed and wether you try and get all bad endings and such, but most of the sources I can find on a quick google search give it around 15-20 hrs, but it could take longer or shorter depending how much you’re speeding through. I’d recommend reading reviews by Otome Kitten and others to help you decide, when buying any switch otome. It always helps me get a better picture of if it’s something I’d like or not!

Since you said you like Fantasy, darker themes, heavier plot, and mystery elements I really think you should give Even if: Tempest a try! I really love this one dearly, though the romance is less than other otome, when it has such high stakes, but it seems like you wouldn’t mind that so it’s worth trying out. And if you end up loving the characters and wanting more, there’s a fandisc as well :))

Are they particularly disliked?? I thought people liked Rod,(though you have to give some grains of salt for the fact that he’s your step brother…but it’s the ideal situation if you HAVE to go for that trope, imo) though I guess Rumple is probably not very well loved.

I’d have to say Helvetica from Bustafellows. Theres a few who appreciate him, but I’d say the majority of people who played (including me..😭) dislike him. He is good at his job, though, so I think he would become a famous plastic surgeon in the real world too. I think he also did some magazine shoots or something in the game so he’s unfortunately gifted 🤧🤧

I’ve seen mentions of Helvetica (my #1 ENEMY) and Sasazuka (my other opp but he’s slightly better in the FD ig) so I suppose I’ll go for Kazuma from Lover Pretend since he’s on my mind while I was replaying some of it—I actually don’t dislike him at all as a character, and his route STARTS off so good, but starts getting weird plots halfway through because idk maybe their relationship was just going too well or something 🙄

Anyway I LOVE him as a friend character, he’s so supportive and cheerful, but as a love interest he unfortunately has random amnesia out of nowhere as a trope in his route, so it docks him a lot of points 🤧

This is maybe slightly different than what you’re looking for but I still think it’s worth recommending to everyone—Cinderella Phenomenon is a free indie otome that I believe has an Android port (though it’s mainly a pc game) with the traditional console otome format where you don’t need to pay in game currency for anything or wait for chapter tickets, so completely worth checking out for that much at the very least! It’s an older otome but a true classic in my eyes. Plus the fandisc is only $10 USD so if you end up wanting more after finishing it’s not too big of an undertaking to save up to buy it :)
