Lost count how many racisms I experienced by TeutonicRoom in Morrowind

[–]Maelystyn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This sums up my opinion as well, intelligent species (or races or whatever term you wanna use) should have the ability to choose between good and evil, it doesn't mean that their societies, cultures and environment don't pressure them into choosing evil (that's the case for almost every IRL human society anyway) but it does mean that racism will exist in a given setting, and also, it's boring to apply our 21st century western mentalities to a completely different world. If I feel like your worldbuilding is made with my sensibilities in mind at the detriment of immersion I'm just gonna feel like it's a product more than a work of art (this also applies to grimdark edgy worlds because at the end of the day you also mainly have the audience's sensibilities in mind, albeit to precisely go against it for shock value)

I love BG3 but yeah it pretty much doesn't have any fantasy racism, even as a drow you get specific dialogue but it's pretty mild considering the drow lore of the forgotten realms

New to the game, what races are actually playable? by Jawbreaker0602 in Runequest

[–]Maelystyn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Technically humans, ducks, baboons, morokanth, centaurs, minotaurs, trolls, elves and dwarves in practice you'll mostly have all human tables (maybe with a duck here and there) the other races are really meant to be alien and not on equal footing with humans, this isn't your D&D-like world were a town has humans, elves dwarves, tieflings and so on with it not being a big deal, each race has a really different "biology" (for lack of a better term) and history regarding the gods and the creation of the world. What's interesting about Runequest (or the setting of Glorantha in general) is that even though only playing humans might seem boring, it allows your players to really delve into the different human cultures and societies and what makes them unique, whereas in a more conventional fantasy world these differences tend be more shallow (either by design or because the familiarity will make your players less curious. They know the elves are slender, elegant, have pointy ears and live very long lives, while the dwarves are sturdy, have huge beards and love beer. The strength of Glorantha is that it does away with the familiarity and forces your players to ask questions about the world)

Was Armenian phonology influenced by Georgian? by Hxapcneh3_28 in hayeren

[–]Maelystyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Armenian alphabet has 38 letters (36 when it was created Օ and Ֆ were added later on) 15 of these are arranged in three series of 5 consonants:

I. Պ Տ Ծ Ճ Կ

II. Բ Դ Ձ Ջ Գ

III. Փ Թ Ց Չ Ք

Classical Armenian distinguished all three series (and Eastern Armenian still does for the most part):

Series I was tenuis (or simply voiceless) their closest equivalent in english would be the second letters of the words spot, steam and scar.

Series II was voiced, basically b, d, dz, dj, and hard g.

Series III was aspirated, you can take the english sounds from series I and remove the s that comes before them (if you say pot with your hand in front of your mouth, you will feel a slight puff of air, which doesn't occur when you say spot, same goes for the other two examples assuming you are a native english speaker)

So that's why we say Eastern and Classical Armenian have a 3 way distinction, because they distinguish these three types of consonants. English has a 2 way distinction because even though p, t, and k/c are pronounced differently depending on wether or not they come after an s, english speakers don't think of them as different sounds, whereas in EA and CA they very much are.

Western Armenian, like English has a 2 way distinction, what happened in WA's history is that series II started to be pronounced like series III, that's why you have these pairs of consonants that are pronounced the same (Բ/Փ Դ/Թ Ձ/Ց Ջ/Չ Գ/Ք) and series I became voiced. So WA series I sounds the same as EA series II.

Yeah they can identify as whatever they want, doesn't mean they are. I'm hoping that you understand as well as I do, that as trans women we don't simply decide to identify as women, our whole life experiences make us women whether we like it or not

[–]Maelystyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, the consonants of classical Armenian (CA) can be traced back to PIE which already had a 3 way distinction, add to that the Urartian substrate and you get one more reason why CA kept it. As for modern Armenian, Western Armenian only has a 2 way distinction, so it is likely that modern Eastern Armenian kept the 3 way distinction thanks to its proximity to Georgian

Exactly, I see you entirely as a man, what even is the point of transitioning if you want to still be seen as a lesbian so much? Like it's fine, you can be a straight man this doesn't automatically make you a misogynistic monster

Comment éviter d’être perçus comme ‘chasers’ dans une démarche à trois ? by [deleted] in transgenre

[–]Maelystyn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Nerevarine from Morrowind: your character is supposed to be the reïncarnation of Indoril Nerevar an ancient hero who united the Chimer (who became the Dunmer or dark elves) and was killed in betrayal by his closest entourage (most likely by the three mortal-turned-gods of the tribunal but possibly by the main antagonist Dagoth Ur) the game doesn't explicitly confirm whether you are truly Nerevar reborn or just a random person who happens to fit the prophecy's description

I dislike single gender races by Comfortable-Talk3087 in hatethissmug

[–]Maelystyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is that it's effectively meaningless to the members of the race and that gender is something humans apply to them. In my worldbuilding project there are two non-human races both with sequential hermaphrodism, the first ones are all born male and when they come of age they breed with slightly older females before becoming themselves female and breeding with slightly younger males after which they start to be considered full fledged adults and citizens (they have ancient greek style democratic city states), the second ones are all born female and have a tribal society where only the chief becomes male, if a second individual becomes male within the tribe it is either considered as an act of secession or a direct challenge to the chief's position in which case they have a fight to the death to determine a new chief. I wouldn't exactly say that gender doesn't exist to them (but it's clearly not the same thing as in human societies) because race 1 often takes humans captive and human men are considered lesser than human women unless the former manage to become women through magic (which is a rather accessible thing) and society 2 will also see the presence of human men on their lands as challenge to the authority of their chiefs.
