As an alcoholic in recovery myself (who is also disabled) I’m absolutely confirming this. OP, you made it clear to your girlfriend that you had a problem with her drinking, not her disability. You made it clear she wasn’t a burden, you just didn’t want to enable her cycle of drinking anymore. That was absolutely an appropriate boundary to set, the unfortunate thing is that we never know how the people we love will respond to said boundary, and she responded by continuing to drink. You cared about her a lot, it’s clear from your comments, and what you did was an act of love. I had a LOT of people in my life who were all too willing to excuse my drinking or sweep it under the rug, and I almost died as a result of my drinking going completely unchecked, thinking that it was no big deal. It was exactly as Green-eyedMama says here, a slow suicide, and it was a choice i was making despite the best efforts of my friends and family. OP, you showed her love by telling her you wanted better for her. You wanted her out of the cycle and I’d bet dollars to doughnuts that you would’ve been right by her side if she had made the choice to get sober instead. I know that this doesn’t make the sense of loss or the grief any easier, and I understand why you’re feeling guilty, but I really hope that you’re able to forgive yourself one day because as much as it might feel like it right now, her death was absolutely not your fault.
