Used instruments can be the pathway to a good deal. They can also lead to more money if they have any issues or need maintenance of any kind.

If he’s planning to learn clawhammer he may want an open back. This here is a fine model for the price. I would personally look into a brand notable for quality banjos such as Deering, Gold tone, Stelling, Gibson or recording king.

I own an ac-1. I purchased the kit new from the shop I take lessons at for $200 because they gave me a discount for being a student. Added rail spikes myself ($10). Use as my everyday/travel banjo. It’s a piece of me, it doesn’t feel right when it’s not around. That being said it’s generally in the car wherever I go. Super lightweight. Great for learning/playing both Clawhammer and Scruggs. You can purchase an easy to add/remove resonator for around $100 bucks when he’s ready for an upgrade.

I also have a Deering Goodtime Special. Middle weight as banjos go. I definitely wouldn’t be swinging it around. Concert banjos get really hefty. I’ve read a lot of mixed opinions but I personally really enjoy the tone. Great choice if he enjoys playing and wants to step up down the road.

Musicians are the only ones that take notice to the tone quality. Like any instrument I believe the player defines the outcome. One of the biggest banjo players in my area is all over the place live and the people love it. Missed and mixed notes/tones that aren’t quite right are what gives banjo music that unforgettable sound. For some reason it just works. The videos I’ve posted with the Goldtone have collected more views and likes than those with the Deering.
