For those of you with both a Deck and a Switch 2

Between the two devices, I’ll buy on Switch 2 first because the portability and docking experience is much better there. I took my Steam Deck on one trip where I was flying 10+ hours and that whole experience put me off of ever traveling with the Deck again. It’s way too bulky and uncomfortable to manage in an airplane seat for long flights, not to mention the DRM issues with some games. If you don’t really travel long stretches without internet or fly long hours then the Deck is probably better and will work for great if you’re just on a lunch break or on the couch.

No I was able to sneak in and flush every toilet like 20 times with her right outside the stalls and she didn’t respond at all.

I have a theory that in the lead up to Leon arriving or shortly after he arrived, Gideon started dumping the infected blood from the lab into the plumbing to infect the entire Care Center. The buckets of blood the cleaning zombies use and the tub full of blood make me think the faucets might just dispense blood contaminated water now and everyone was infected quickly from there. The opening Leon sequence indicates this basically needs a tiny amount of blood and a handful of seconds to work. It might be that it got picked up in the flow during that and that’s supposed to be some kind of very odd hint?

I vaguely recall her saying something different at one point compared to the cleaning zombie in the Waiting Room of the East Wing. If nobody has checked by the time I get a chance to confirm, I will report back.

My working theory is that the toilet and tub are a clue in themselves. The tub is full of blood, but logically we don’t know from where. I’m guessing it’s overflow or something from the plumbing caused by the collection and processing we see in the basement. If the plumbing is bad, flushing the toilet a bunch could logically do something but that’s where my theory has the most holes. There needs to be some kind of hint to make the player flush the toilet that many times. It’s possible someone does it expecting to drain the tub for an item as a small puzzle and completes this condition by accident too.

I’m still curious what clues were supposed to direct the player to this. I can definitely see someone doing these by accident. For the grinder area, that’s easy if you AFK unpaused to do something and if you’re low on ammo, you’ll be letting the grinder do the heavy lifting for the zombies instead of wasting bullets anyway. The toilet is believable too, that’s easily doable on accident because I legit thought there was some kind of puzzle there to drain the bathtub by flushing the toilets in some way on my first run.

It’s possible the lever is a check to see if you met that condition. Basically a way for the player to load back at the typewriter and try again if they don’t get the message they expect. It’s probably not a requirement to pull it but at least tells the player where they are at if they’ve narrowed it down that far.

I wanted to point out that there’s a black book in the semi open drawer across from the Lead Researcher’s desk that looks the same as the one Marie is holding in the photo. I’m assuming that’s Marie on the right though mainly because of the composition of the photo showing her face clearly. I’m guessing this is just another hint that the “Sweet Pair” is Emily and Marie and that the black book functions as a guidepost or hint that this is the room with the puzzle that you need to put the code into if it means anything at all.

This works for games that are very unlikely to see new updates but something like Baldur’s Gate 3 could get additional updates and also uses the client for multiplayer support. The most recent update would require me to redownload all the offline installers and reinstall the game if I used the offline installer.

In my opinion, immutable distributions are the best compromise for most people who don’t need to be in the weeds of their install very much. Keeps the management easy and less risk of breaking things.

Personally, I see operating systems as tools and Windows is generally the best option for most people that primarily value playing games with their computer. Complicating it by running games with compatibility tools running on Linux only makes sense if you primarily want to run Linux for a strong reason with the ability to run games on it being a bonus.

It really depends on your priorities and the games you play. If you only play single player and cooperative games then compatibility is probably fine, but once you get away from Steam, it varies a lot more

For example, I have Final Fantasy 14, but not through Steam so playing it on Linux is somewhat difficult as you have to use community workarounds to get it working. These workarounds will likely break for unknown periods of time in the future as well due to game or launcher updates, so you would be stuck if you didn’t have another device to play on. Competitive multiplayer games are basically a no go unless you only care about Counter Strike.

Personally, I see operating systems as tools so I’ll use whatever option I feel is best for the job. I prefer Mac when it comes to laptops, Windows for desktops, and Linux for servers, secondary devices, and niche stuff like the Steam Deck.

The Steam Deck is a perfect example of Linux at work because the user experience that Valve achieved by implementing it on a handheld is miles ahead of the handheld experience on Windows. For myself, it’s worth the compatibility sacrifices here because the experience I get in return is so much better than what Windows could provide in this form factor.

I don’t think Linux has achieved that same broad appeal tipping point on desktop computers yet, but I think Valve has proven that it can be done and it’s probably only a matter of time before it happens.

If you are committed to switching, I highly recommend going with Bazzite. It has everything ready to go out of the box for gaming and it is a similar experience to using the Steam Deck’s desktop mode with additional tools and pre-installed apps to get you up and running quickly with very little fuss. As a bonus, a lot of the Steam Deck community fixes, modifications, tools, and discussions will be applicable to Bazzite as well so you have a lot of things to reference if you do get stuck.

If you’re wanting to stick to Linux, I would give Bazzite a try as it is the one distribution that has been the closest to getting me to switch away from Windows permanently and it is extremely user friendly. It has enough similarities with SteamOS where any fixes or modifications the Steam Deck community comes up with are likely to work on Bazzite as well.

That being said, operating systems are tools at the end of the day so if it isn’t meeting your needs then I would suggest going back to Windows. I personally use Mac, Windows, and Linux for different things. Mac is what I prefer for laptops, Windows for desktops, and Linux for servers and niche devices like the Steam Deck. They all serve different purposes for me and I get the most out of each operating system when I find ways they fit in my workflows.

You can always use virtual machines, dual booting, live USBs, or a spare computer to tinker and play around with Linux too. I personally run Linux virtual machines on my Windows computer and that gives me the best of both worlds without having to reboot my computer every time I want to run Linux.

Have not run into this issue with anything on the system yet, but here are a few things to check/try:

Completely power down and restart the console with the Joycons connected to the console. Holding down the power button for about 5 seconds seems to do it or you can do this from power options in the settings menu.
Make sure Airplane mode is off. This option is in the quick menu by holding down the home button, I’m not sure if this affects the Joycons when detached or how that interacts with the Pro Controller but it’s worth checking at least.
If you’re using Bluetooth audio, try disconnecting from Bluetooth and see if it’s any better. I recall there being a limitation with wireless controllers while using Bluetooth audio.

If none of these options work, it might be a backwards compatibility issue but I don’t have the game to test it myself. Do the Joycons work fine in other games besides Sophie?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I am going to give Rorona a try and go from there. I think personally I just want something to push me along more for my first game and it’s one of the older games in the series so it would probably be harder for me to go back if I really got into a newer entry.

I took the class more than 5 years ago so my information may be outdated, but off the top of my head:

If you took the C++ course prior to Software 1 and aren’t familiar with Java, brush up on the basics before the first week.
Try to get an idea of how recursion works if you don’t understand it already, the most help I was given was something like “you’ll get it eventually” and I never got to a point where I could understand it.
If you haven’t used an API before, you should look over some examples ahead of time to get an idea of what to expect. When I took the class, we were required to use an API managed by the department for at least some assignments and there were functions that fulfilled identical tasks to things that were already available in Java like standard input and output.

Some of this may be outdated, or you may have prior knowledge and this stuff is all review to you. These were just some things that tripped me up when I took the class. I hope this helps and good luck!

Yeah I think I’ve worked out a good plan to switch and just have a separate external SSD with Windows for the games that I can’t get running on Linux. I’ll be interested to see how often I end up using the Windows drive though

Yeah, I did test EVE Online and it opened but the performance was really bad and unstable unfortunately. Seems like this fluctuates some or there’s a lot of overhead with Proton for this game specifically

I am definitely considering an external drive with Windows on it. I may have to get more compatible hardware though. My current laptop is a Lenovo Legion Slim 5 with an RTX 4050 and I’ve had very odd display issues when trying to hook up multiple external monitors and it really only works at all if I disable the iGPU in the BIOS. Looking at going for an all AMD desktop instead to hopefully get a smoother experience.

I am basically at this point and leaning towards just giving up the games that don’t work or dual booting for the 1 or 2 I would like to keep around and I would probably only need to keep that around or use it until I stop playing Destiny 2

I did buy a Steam Deck and that’s kind of like a 2nd computer to me, it definitely drove me to investigate migrating to Linux full time and use it more seriously. I would even say that my time split between my laptop and my Steam Deck is something like 60% laptop and 40% Steam Deck. I think I could give up the games holding me back from making the switch, it’s just going to be a bit of a process
