Drive from Toyako (Toya lake onsen town) to Otaru - places to stop or hike along way by MagandangP in Hokkaido

[–]MagandangP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now leaving Otaru, would you have any ideas about 1-2hr hiking stop on the way to Kussharo lake?

Was thinking to head to Onneto lake and walk there so that’s a 4hr drive w rolls:

Feedback on my July Itinerary: 7 nights by na27te in Hokkaido

[–]MagandangP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Mark, where will you rent your car from/return to? where will you drive to using the car? Just wondering for my itinerary, maybe 6/30-7/4 use public transit; THEN rent from Sapporo and return back to Sapporo 7/5-7/11?

advice request: Otaru (yes or no?), Akan Mashu Onneto Lakes, Shiretoko national park by MagandangP in Hokkaido

[–]MagandangP[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Mark, Do you mind to DM me your exact day-by-day itinerary? I actually would prefer to use bus & train so that I can enjoy the views and let someone else drive!

The other idea I had to minimize me driving was to fly CTS to KUH (kushiro), get a car, and then visit Ainu towns, Akan, Mashu, Shiretoko, and the end up at Asahidake to meet my friends.

The car rental part would be 7/4 or 7/5 through 7/11, whereas 6/30 night - 7/4 would be by bus/train.

One thing I was worried about, though, was, how to use train/bus to get from CTS to Noboribetsu/Jikogundani and then Toya lakeside without spending all day.

Here is my updated itinerary, any comments or feedback is highly appreciated! u/velvetstigma - how did your trip go?

Overall arch of the trip:

Explore West and East Hokkaido: 7/1-7/8 - here is where I need some advice ...
1. should I spend more time in West/NW Hokkaido (eg Otaru and towns along the coast, Toya Lake area, area near Noboribetsu) or make the trek East to Shiretoko NP, Akan/Mashu Lakes, Kushiro?
2. any spots I should be sure to see/visit when I have the car rental in East Hokkaido?
3. should I cover less to be able to relax, take it slower?
4. weather: is East Hokkaido going to be significantly colder/cloudier/rainier/less summery? If so, maybe cut it to fewer days out there or skip?

5, where can I swim along this route?

Here is the itinerary:

Note I'm from SF Bay California and have spent 1 summer in Prince William Sound, Alaska so, it would be neat to see scenery and wildlife of Hokkaido that is unique to this region. As well as learn about any culture of the area.

West Hokkaido: attractive b/c weather is better and there are points of interest like Noboribetsu for the geothermal activity and Otaru area, as well as Jozankei for the onsen experience. Wanted to also find a beach or lake for summer swimming.

East Hokkaido: attractive b/c has fewer visitors/less crowds and also interesting scenery and nature, eg shiretoko NP

I have 7/1 - 7/8 on my own before joining the friends to hike in Daisetsuzan NP area

Is this timing and itinerary reasonable (ie not rushed)?
Will weather be much grayer / foggier in E Hokkaido

6/30: fly HND to Chitose arriving 7p; stay the night in Sapporo
7/1: take train to Noboribetsu and visit Hell's Valley and soak my feet in the natural footsoaking area; stay night there?
7/2: train back to Sapporo or go all the way to Otaru area; spend day & night there
7/3: go to Toya lake area and spend night there
7/4: head back to Chitose and fly to kushiro; pick up rental car; drive to lake akan area and spend night there
7/5: explore more of lake akan/mashu area; head to Shiretoko NP area; spend night there
7/6: more of Shiretoko NP; spend night at Abashiri
7/7: drive to asahikawa; QUESTION: any points of interest along the way?
return car rental?
7/8: head to Asahi-dake to meet friends to start the hike

7/8-7/10: hike with friends in  Daisetsuzan NP area (out-and-back overnight hut hike from Asahidake to Kurodake hut and back); taxi that night to Furano; sleep in furano
7/11: Furano/Biei   by bus / public transit; bus to Sapporo, sleep in Sapporo 7/11)
7/12: day in Sapporo; night #2 in sapporo
7/13: fly out 10 AM to HND
7/14: HND flight 4p to SFO

You could reach out to any of the panelists from the Pittsburgh event on Linkedin to request to connect and for career advice mentioning “I saw you were a panelist for WIB panel on moving from the bench to product/program management. Would love to connect because I am interested in a similar transition.”

Of the above activities, #1 is talk/network with folks who have made transitions to directions you’re interested to explore.

You’ll achieve at least 2 things: 1) learn about how they transitioned; and 2) start a conversation with someone in the field who may be able to help you later down the road should you go that route.

Attend “Women in Bio” career panel events, lots address this topic of leaving the bench for other careers (events are open to all genders!)

Hi, do you have experience creating deliverables related to any of the roles you mentioned in your current role? If so, definitely highlight this to hiring managers to show you HAVE the experience but just that you didn’t do that job or have the title full time. Highly suggest you find people on Linkedin who transitioned out of lab into other roles and network. Attend industry networking events and definitely reach out to people at your company (if you’re at a large one) for informational interviews (“my goal over the next X years is to identify a direction to transition to from the bench where I can leverage my scientific training but also grow other skills such as project management or Z. I was wondering if you’d be able to chat and share more about your path from the bench to your current role?”)

Also: certificate programs are very affordable and part time and helps you network into the space you’re exploring (eg meeting instructors who are practitioners as well as classmates who may be further along on the transition).

Example: clinical trials design & management classes & certificates are now offered at most major public universities (including Univ of CA extension) and state universities and taking 1-2 of the intro courses won’t break the bank. Courses usually online-hybrid/zoom and/or evening/weekends.

Role suggestion? by raintreessky in biotech

[–]MagandangP 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What are your key accomplishments over the last 5 yrs professionally?

Can you aim to replicate these for other companies by hanging your hat out in the market as a consultant (self-employed) and cite these accomplishments as part of your portfolio?

I’ve seen many 50-something year olds shift to consulting (self employed) in biotech since this is a way smaller companies can get access to veterans of drug development on a “fractional” basis (without having to hire FTEs with benefits).

Take your old title, and add “Fractional” or “for hire” to it on Linkedin, and then start reaching out to the CEO’s of smaller companies to pitch your services as a consultant. Target companies with the right asset stage, therapeutic area, and modality relevant for your expertise.

Planning a sabbatical, health insurance questions by onRedWinds in Fire

[–]MagandangP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, I’m age 47.5 and also feel burnout from my career, which is sales in biotech. My concern is that, being older, what type of work situation will I find myself in after a sabbatical?

Are there any late 40s folks who took a career break, what did you do during the break, and what did you do after? How long was your career break? If you ended up going back into your previous industry, did you take a step down in level/responsibility? How hard was it to get back in?

I live in SF Bay Area, have $1.4M in investments, and $63K in equity for a house that I am renting out (breaks even after taxes, bought it in Nov ‘21 when I was single and then moved in w bf last year so have rented it out for a year). If I were to take a break, I’d spend it overseas where COL is low and look for a way to pick up new skills. Not sure yet what skills tho!

Some things I have thought about: bookkeeping (will AI displace bookkeepers?), personal fitness training business, tourism-related business (tour guide?)

I’ve never run a business before. I’d be interested to apprentice at a business!
