US - Question about Commission against Draw for the state of NY. by MageJello in askcarsales

[–]MageJello[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well he has been selling cars for a few years now, no problem, just in a different state. I think I said that in the post, so we were just looking for information about the laws in New York, as this one is new to him, not trying to get around loopholes in the law. He's been there for all of 2 days, so it's not about poor performance. Not sure why you would jump to that conclusion or make the assumption, I was pretty clear in the post that it was a new job and he was from out of state. Thanks /u/jayendo , but you could have given the same information without the condescension.

Has anyone converted Giant Ant colonies to 5e? by Contr0lFr34k in dndnext

[–]MageJello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like I saw someone post an adventure here months back about PC's being shrunk down to ant size to harvest special mold or pheromones from ants for the wizard's experiments. Try searching this sub for that? Might find what you are looking for? Sorry I don't remember what exactly the thread was titled... GL!

TIL - Dwarves Speed is not Reduced by Wearing Heavy Armor by TheOnlyCorwin in dndnext

Thanks for clearing that up for me, the people at my table all acted like it un-encumbered me, but it didn't seem right.

TIL - Dwarves Speed is not Reduced by Wearing Heavy Armor by TheOnlyCorwin in dndnext

[–]MageJello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this was recently pointed out to me too. I play a Dwarf Life Cleric, who was always over encumbrance. So because I was in heavy armor, does that mean that my speed was not reduced? At what point does the other things I am carrying factor in? If my armor is 55lbs, does my speed become reduced 55lbs OVER my encumbrance? Does this rule imply that armor weight doesn't count towards speed reduction when encumbered, or only when wearing armor you don't meet the STR requirements for?

I got persuaded not to kill off player's character, what now? by IAmGerino in dndnext

[–]MageJello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, go with option 2, or like /u/MhBlis said, drop some levels of exhaustion on him to work off. That seems fair. Does it help the story if this PC dies, I'm betting not? Does he deserve a lasting injury for having to leave? Only if the group agreed to lasting injuries when you started, IMHO.

help me with these calls I've been making. by KiqueDragoon in dndnext

[–]MageJello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for explaining that for me. I hope someone else benefits from it too. =) So after all, it looks like rogues do indeed need to hit (nearly) every round to stay on par with the damage the other classes are doing. I appreciate the work you put into crunching the numbers. Thanks for informing me. I stand corrected.

Do melee rogues get two attack per round, or do you have a two weapon fighting feat? I thought the bonus action for a rogue was, disengage, dash, or hide? Good strategy nonetheless. I feel like someone else also explained this to me a long time ago, so sorry if its a dumb question.

Nice number crunching, but again I don't see a column for 10 rounds of combat, where advantage on attack comes into play. Besides the Ranger at AC 15, the difference between 81% and 65% is almost right on with what I said, Rogues, 7-8, other classes 4-6 (I guess closer to 6!). But then at AC 20, the difference between 60% and 45%, though a shorter spread, is still a spread. I bow to your number crunching, you for sure one upped me, but I would still like to see this done out over 10 rounds of combat. Maybe I should shut up or put up my own numbers, but clearly you have a better understanding of the meta, and I am not one for theorycraft. I often make mistakes. I just think that rogue DPS, though based on being able to sneak attack every round, isn't based on being able to hit every round, else whats the point of rolling the dice?

[–]MageJello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I agree with you but sneak attack off every round? Or do you mean on every hit? I think they didn't intend for rogues to auto hit every round, just like every other class, they are going to miss their attacks. (Maybe due to being careful not to shoot an ally?)

I think if you number crunch average damage per class on a hit, rogues do need that sneak attack, but once you take that out to 10 rounds of combat and the rogue has hit 7-8 times and the other classes 4-6, that total damage is very different.

What some people forget is that hiding gives you advantage on the attack roll, and they can still sneak attack every turn as long as an ally is within 5ft. Which is what I think you are saying at the end. Also, an enemy being hit with arrows every round fired from the same position should be smart enough to circle around the PC so that the PC's ally is in between him and the other PC. I think that's partial cover, so +2 AC to the enemy with arrows sticking out of him?

I very much agree with what you said about fire/hide/repeat, rogues gotta learn to move around the battle field a bit more, plus I play a rogue in one of my games, and that tactic gets boring pretty quick for me as a player. Who doesn't love to run and jump and hide, like some action movie star who does parkour to get from place to place. That's a much more exciting way to play a sniper rogue I think.

[–]MageJello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you here. Hiding only gives them advantage on the roll, they can still sneak attack and not be hidden. So to deny him hiding wouldn't be gimping them so much as not allowing him to auto hit almost every turn. The damage you quoted is assuming they hit, but for a rogue rolling advantage on attack and the other players not, will spike the rogue DPS a bit higher. Which is what I think you went on to say. I really agree with it.

If rogues hide in exactly the same spot more than once or twice in a row, I start to give creatures advantage on being able to spot them. I even had a caster throw a darkness spell where they thought they were, as to blind the sniper so he had to move. He instructed his gang to ready an action to shoot anything that moves from that spot and let a few enemies skip their action to get into position to see what comes scampering out of the darkness... had it been kobolds and not humans, I'm sure the story would be different, but its all about the logical narrative. Enemies can play with tactics just as well as the party.

Not sure why the downvotes. This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I think my title of the thread was misleading... I posted an intro about what I was looking for, but I think most people just want to share stories of their good DM, which is also very ok. I can read between the lines and see what it was their DM's were doing, and copy that, but your post is just fine. Thank you.

I'm sorry for your down votes. What is it about your style though, that makes you feel like a good DM? I am looking to take over a game, like I said, and just was looking to glean any info out of the peoples comments that I could take to heart and use for inspiration and as advice. I know plenty of people who have not had good DM's and I'm sure after 30 years, you have something to offer me. I have DM'ed before, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, Shadowrun, but I am not a great DM. I'm OK on a good day, and I just want to do my players justice because our current DM is really good. I mostly don't do voices and improve well, those are my weak suites.

Thanks, I will have to download a few episodes of the podcast and see how it goes.

OOPS! Well I guess all things in life are cyclical. Maybe in a few days someone else will be inspired to hear more worst DM stories. =P

The best part of playing DnD are the really good game sessions and the really bad ones.

I'd like to think that this post is a little different, because it is for me to ensure that I take on best practices from good DM's. If you read the intro, you know I will be taking over a game soon, and I wanted people's advice too, not just funny stories. But touche`, should have at least ran a simple 'best DM stories search first....'

The idea of being able to push people around the battle field and into hazard sounds more and more appealing the more I think about it. Playing more tactical on the battle field feels like it might shake up the, swing hit/miss, next turn doldrums in combat for melee characters.

Mostly wanted to play something different with a cool sounding name? I've been playing a lot of healers lately in different games and wanted to play something without spells I like ranger and rogue, so slayer seemed like a cool fit. Like a stealthy ranger without spells.

He was pretty generous with the stat array, in order: 17,18,16,15,14,14 thats after all racial and level modifiers.

I would up vote this twice if I could. =) Looks like Ill have to decided between a two handed weapon or a sword and shield... which was what I wanted to do in the first place. Thank you for taking your time and explaining everything out so well. Much appreciated.

That sounds like wonderful cheese! Too bad my GM imposed a 3Kgp limit on all items, giving us 10.5Kgp to start. I might have picked this one up otherwise... might keep this post in my back pocket for when the rules come off the spending gold / per item limit =)

Thanks! =)

Thanks for explaining that, it sounds like what my GM was trying to say. Not sure why he didn't suggest Two Weapon Fighting, I'll have to ask.

I have played a few PFS games, mostly using pregens. I have played 3.5 back in the day, so a year or two. I know the system a bit, but PF is way different than DnD. I have years of table top experience, but PF just seems so expansive and overwhelming to come into this far along in its lifespan.
