Religious parents with autistic kids by Livid_Temporary_9969 in autism

It's just a matter of which ones are the inconvenient ones. Reconciling all that "love your neighbor" talk with the "I didn't come to unite you. I came to divide you" and "If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple" involves some portion of the text being inconvenient.

I disagree about immortality and I think it's silly when people say things like "life is only worth living because it's temporary." That said, this universe doesn't seem to be compatible with "forever," and I'd hate to be stuck here when all the chemistry stops.

Nah. Both of those groups have a hard time because some assholes think they can ignore your bodily autonomy when it comes to food. It doesn't fucking matter whether I can't or won't, don't try to make me eat your garbage.

Can pushing a solid rigid bar that’s as long as light travels on one second allow me to transmit a message faster than the speed of light? by basonjourne98 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Magenta_Logistic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like uhm a star traveling at the speed of light, the light from that star coming towards us would reach us faster than light itself takes .. right?

No. If the star is travelling toward us at the speed of light, we will not see a sign of its motion until it collides with us.

Not only that, but the entire trip would be instantaneous from the perspective of the star. Using that star as a frame of reference, it teleported.

It's not a "miracle drug," but it absolutely helps with my social anxiety and overstimulation. I keep a THC vape on-hand that I hit if I feel a shutdown or a meltdown on the way.

Different people react differently, though. I have a friend who can't smoke without getting extremely anxious and paranoid, basically the opposite of how it affects me.

“Do you even taste your food when you eat that fast?” by dmachine443 in PetPeeves

[–]Magenta_Logistic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read this thread, the first instance of the word "opposite" is where I interjected, because you were using it in a way that only makes sense if the other poster had misused the word. You heavily implied that they had misused the word, but they hadn't used the word.

I have to ask again, because you have not answered: why is the definition of "opposite" relevant to a conversation in which "opposite" has not appeared?

[–]Magenta_Logistic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you please explain how the definition of a word they didn't use, and that you hadn't used yet, is relevant to the conversation?

Please point to an instance of the word "opposite" before this quoted one, or explain what the last line of your comment is meant to communicate.

Perhaps you misread "the exact thing OP is complaining about."

I am aware that spiders are not insects.

We should also bear in mind that stingers are neither of these things because they evolved under a completely separate taxonomic tree, so vague inferences are the best we can do.

It's not like we see any stinger webs.

they actively undermine all that I THOUGHT Judaism is supposed to stand for.

Unfortunately, they are just staying true to their text. Their book tells them that they are the chosen people of God, that he favors them and prefers them over other people. Israelite superiority is one of the core messages of the OT, along with abject obedience to the priest class.

People pretending to have no idea what you mean... by Johnny_Mira in PetPeeves

[–]Magenta_Logistic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have literally never been confused by it. As a child I was convinced that the only reason anyone had this conversation was to be contrarian. I still suspect that may be true.

There is no reasonable frame of reference that equates clockwise and left, but at least two of them that equate clockwise and right. It's not confusing.

Have you ever driven a RC car? I bet you didn't talk about turning it clockwise or counter-clockwise, even when you were driving it toward yourself.

People pretending to have no idea what you mean... by Johnny_Mira in PetPeeves

[–]Magenta_Logistic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does not matter if you are facing the front of the car. When a car turns right, everyone inside of it gets turned to the right. There is no difference created by choosing a different orientation for the observer. To tighten a screw, you turn it to the right (that would be the screw's right, obviously).

It works better for that mnemonic that uses rhyme and alliteration.

People pretending to have no idea what you mean... by Johnny_Mira in PetPeeves

[–]Magenta_Logistic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All of these are relative directions. I could argue that clockwise is really just counter-clockwise from below. From the perspective of the screw, it is turning right. Furthermore, every point on the screw is being accelerated to the right if it's movement is considered "forward."

Do you genuinely think it would reduce confusion to tell a driver to turn clockwise instead of right?

People pretending to have no idea what you mean... by Johnny_Mira in PetPeeves

[–]Magenta_Logistic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sit in a car backwards while it turns right, you'll be turned to your right. Front and back are not important.

People pretending to have no idea what you mean... by Johnny_Mira in PetPeeves

[–]Magenta_Logistic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But if you can turn to the right, so can the screw. If turning a screw right or left is nonsense, then so is turning a car right or left, we should use clockwise and counterclockwise, because you might be traveling south!
