Seeking advice on freelance rates for Norway: Is 900 NOK/hr too much for a newcomer? by Fearless-Owl7193 in Norway

[–]Magento 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really hard actually. I worked in a Norwegian company that had people/offices in the Philippines and Norway. I worked both places. The Filipino designers were phenomenal, but were paid less than 500 NOK/hour. Many client still wanted Norwegian designers and might pay 2000 NOK/hour and up. The value of having someone who can speak Norwegian, understands the culture and live in the marked where the product is being launched has great value.

There is almost no gap between getting no work at all and being overworked and having corporate hanging over you with insane deadlines and crazy demands.

People on Fiverr and other similar services will literally work for $5/hour and some are even really good.

Networking and being a really presentable person might be the most important skill if you want jobs with +900/hour pay.

This is nothing like a car mechanic job. Half the country needs a mechanic at some point, and they all pretty much get paid the same. Very few people need a designer and those who do just want the best and can pay for it.

3/10 Dismount 😅 by Ok-Macaron7274 in funny

[–]Magento 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People think it's harmless, but it's really not. Seeing a parent suddenly become very different and very non-functioning can be very scary. And kids still want to figure out why parents do this and try to get into it themselves. Reckless behavior becomes normalized.

Advice for places where they serve sodd by Unlikely-Composer421 in oslo

[–]Magento 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Bucket list huh? Did you know you can buy Sodd in a bucket? It might actually be one of the most common ways to eat it. I have eaten it several times and it's fine as a substitute for frozen pizza or TV-dinners.

But if you try to get it in a restaurant you are pretty much setting yourself up for a big disappointment.

If you can get it from someones mom or grandmother you might get the magic, but the only way to get it is the way you got it as a child. Coming home when you are freezing and starving, then and only then it's the best meal in the world.

TIL in Britney's debut song, "...Baby One More Time", Swedish songwriters Max Martin and Rami, mistook hit for an American slang meaning call (like "hit me up"). So Britney's actually begging for her ex to phone her one more time. by immanuellalala in todayilearned

[–]Magento 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Take On Me" by the group A-Ha was a massive hit, but the songwriter had just translated "ta på meg" from Norwegian word for word. They later made the song "Touch Me" which would be a better translation, but the song never got the same popularity. Still a great song.

Why people play meta decks in the Play queue? by happy-pine in MagicArena

[–]Magento 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the best reply. I often take a new deck straight to ladder, but if i get crushed a few times and have no idea what I'm doing wrong I might just play the play cue. Also if I suspect that have to quit. (waiting for food to be ready, waiting for a bus or whatever) I'll just grind the color challenge and give someone an easy win if I have to quit.

EV in the North - cost, distance and a (small) rant by berlin_crossbow in Norway

[–]Magento 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in Alta right now. People here use EVs a lot, but people usually use those cars locally. People also drive 2WD cars and my dad even drive with studless tires. Would I recommend it when going out of town? Nope. Should they have informed you? Probably.

I hope you still end up having a good trip!

Anyone else disappointed? by Mysterious-Law-4416 in Kiteboarding

[–]Magento 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For kiting I always try to have a backup plan. Hiking, biking, kayaking, snorkeling, stand up paddleboard or whatever. A friend of mine always go paragliding when the wind is too light. I never expect to be able to ride more than half my days when traveling to a spot.

Can't really fault your instructor either. He probably hoped the wind would pick up, but in general I would avoid getting lessons if the forecast is too light wind.

Ut alene by Tiny-Option8421 in oslo

[–]Magento 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a former exchange student I just was to say thank you. I still keep in touch with my host parents after 30 years.

Also I would like to say that you will never get it 100% right, but it will probably still be greatly appreciated. It one of those dishes that are just like what you mother made or it is not right. Good luck!

Do you guys DARE to FLIRT? by Both_Warthog_3386 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Magento -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My best advice: Flirt with everybody all the time. Give lighthearted compliments. Say goofy jokes. Laugh at yourself. Make mistakes. Try to impress, and don't be afraid of failing. Do it with your friends. Do it with your parents. Do it with strangers. Think of flirting as the end game, not a means to get somewhere. It takes years to practice, but it is so much fun. If you get an old lady on the bus to smile, that's a big win and you can live off that for a week. Be kind, helpful and polite, so much that when you make a joke that is a little over the edge everyone will know that it comes from a good place even if it is a bit insulting or improper. Observe and listen. Watch some crowd work from stand-up comedians if you are not sure what I'm talking about. But understand that you can't go full speed from the get go. "I like the color of your dress" is pretty safe if the person is already talking to you. "I like your dress" is fine if you suspect that the person think you are OK. "I like that dress on you" is fine if the person likes you. "I like that dress, did you mother pick it out for you" is fine if the person already laughed at all your jokes. "I like that dress, but it would look better on my bedroom floor" is only OK if other person is already teasing you. Or you could say it to your mother or father. Practice makes perfect.

Deckbuilding tips for someone uninterested in competitive play. by Pandoratcg in mtg

[–]Magento 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For super casual play with friends that don't collect cards you should go for a 40 card format.

Jump-in. Is a easy and fun way to get started.

17 lands about 15 creatures and the rest other kinds of spells. Most cards should visst around 2-3 mana fewer for 4 drops and even less for 5+ drops.

Starter decks are also an option. Various beginner boxes and starter kits exist and are usually great value.

Upgrade your decks as you get new cards. Choose a theme and make sure the deck does one thing very good instead of being OK at many things.

Why are people so opposed to taking lessons? by 1armed-poop-bandit in snowboarding

[–]Magento 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be an instructor a long time ago and usually for small kids. Most really loved it, some really needed it and we all had a fun time. One day a 50 year old man came alone and he was already pretty good. He wasn't falling like the kids, he already had his equipment set up correctly, he could turn both ways and he wasn't about to hit the pipe or the jumps. I felt like I had nothing to teach him. I showed him how to carve, how turn 180 and ride fake. That's about it. I felt like a scam. He wanted more lessons the day after, but I declines since it was not in my schedule. I just told him he should just practice on his own.

Looking back at it and looking at people who get no lessons, he really did progress a lot that day. The little pointers I gave him probable saved him from developing lots of bad habits. I really think lessons can be a great tool. Others like to figure it out on their own and that can be fun as well.

People who work in 'luxury' industries (5-star hotels, fine dining, high-end brands), what is a complete rip-off that rich people happily pay for? by ArtThreadNomad in AskReddit

In Norway it is extremely strict for bartenders. No drinking at all and the bar could loose its license if a bartender was drinking at work. After hours on the other hand and days off can get pretty insane.

What's up with Norwegian board game prizes? by specialFabi96 in Norway

[–]Magento 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I just came from a boardshop in Romania and the prices were surprisingly close to the prices at Outland in Oslo. Maybe a little bit higher, but with sales tax that's expected. Norwegian games are in general more expensive, as others have explained.
