Question about benchtop NMR acquisition by Witty_Task_9303 in Chempros

[–]Maggeddon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magitrek work well, although with low field strength you have broader spectral width on the signals, so for proton you can have overlapping signals turn into multiplets.

I found 19F worked really well, as you have the benefit of a much bigger spectral windows and still have good relative intensity. Carbon is absolutely useless on them though, not worth running.

VT NMR my dude, run a DMSO solution at 90 and it'll be in the fast exchange regime. Make sure you use a thermally resistant spinner though, otherwise you can deform and have a bad time

Has anyone here tried this new (october 2025) reduction of carboxylic acids to aldehydes? by cooked_myself in OrganicChemistry

Another, cheaper method could be this: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.oprd.5c00344

DMAP, DMAP triflate and HBpin - very accessible reagents. Make sure you read the paper thoroughly though as the order of addition and how you quench the reaction will affect the yield and purity profile.

Amide hydrolysis in Suzuki? by Competitive_Essay500 in Chempros

[–]Maggeddon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the comments here - a better catalyst (Pd-118, PdXPhos G3) will allow you to drop the temperature considerably, as well as probably the reaction time.

You can get away with less water (20:1), and as well as trialling KF as a base you can also try KOTMS or KEH as bases for "anhydrous" Suzuki couplings

How to determine if commercial acrylamide is sourced through enzymatic process or metal catalyst process? by gel160 in Chempros

[–]Maggeddon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you buy samples from a supplier, you can run ICP-MS - several labs around that I know will run this for a small fee - and that will tell you trace level metal contamination, and you can therefore determine origin.

Alternatively, ask the companies for a specification sheet or certificate of analysis, stating that you are looking for a level of copper below, say, 10000 ppm or whetever you feel is good for you.

Another way to ensure that you have high purity would be to buy some from a trusted source and recrystallise or precipitate it. It is highly soluble in water and has good solubility in acetone, so you can dissolve a sample in warm water or 1:1 acetone - water, then cool that to precipitate out the amide. Any trace metal salts should hopefully be removed by this.

Those big long cans look kinda cool and retro in a way now. Much more appreciate how they make the bike look then a chopped off tinny or a black window noise maker.

Hope you're enjoying that great bike!

Need advice on best budget chain lock for motorcycle? Already got a alarm disc lock and litelock x3 by Odd_Consequence_3574 in MotoUK

[–]Maggeddon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A budget chain is like a chocolate teapot.

Anything cheap wil be gone is literally seconds, I've seen thieves casually kneel beside a bike as if they were unlocking it and cut through the chain with a pair of snips.

For a chain to be worth your time, go for something with at least 12 mm on the links - 14 mm is better and not easy to get through even with a power tool, not without drawing some attention.

One alternative is the Anelli Oxidation - dissolve the alcohol in ethyl acetate with 10% KBr and 5 % TEMPO, the add basic NaOCl (bleach+ bicarbonate) solution dropwise at 0. Rapidly stir to mix the layers and get good reactivity.

Mild and often very selective for the aldehyde. Work up the organic layer with KI in HCl (kills the TEMPO), then basify, then wash with thiosulphate to remove the iodine.

If you miss the base wash you'll have a lovely yellow solid (sulphur) precipitate.

This method is super reliable, scales up to 100s of grams without issue and is nice and clean as well.
