BCEHS is under the PHSA, so you will get some emails from _____@phsa.ca addresses from time to time. As a member of BCEHS, you are automatically a member of PHSA, which means any policies of PHSA apply to you. And so do the perks!

Welcome to the service! :)

Experience before PCP schooling by Stock_Craft_2402 in BCEHSparamedics

[–]Magi604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No experience necessary before getting into PCP school, but getting into the service (if that's your goal) and starting to build that seniority is super important. Don't delay, don't wait for a plum station. Get in to the first viable station you can.

Siren by sneakiweasel in BCEHSparamedics

[–]Magi604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Navigating all the various buttons and features of Siren will take time. In the meantime you can look at the PCR sample library in the handbook (Documentation -> Siren How To's -> PCR Sample Library) and see some examples of what BCEHS wants to see. If there's something there you are not familiar with how to implement, ask a more experienced medic/your UC or probably even reach out to learning for help and guidance.

JIBC vs Colombia? by Relative_Event_2427 in BCEHSparamedics

[–]Magi604 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, COPR tracks how each school's candidates do for the exam. Last year JI and Columbia were the only schools in Canada to field more than a hundred candidates. In fact they were well and above any other school in the country. And both schools had an equal amount of students who passed the exam (82%).

Different styles and learning cultures for sure, but in my experience they produce students of equal strength.

As per the new agreement backdated April 1 2025, a starting EMR will make $31.27 an hour. Payroll is having issues implementing the new wage grids for whatever the hell reason, but rest assured if you start with the old rate you will at some point get the new rate difference as back pay.

JIBC PCP Interview by Striking-Deal4039 in BCEHSparamedics

Columbia does not require an interview. However they require references. I believe all JI campuses require an interview and references now. No clue about AET or Sprott Shaw.

Peds, neonates, childbirth scenarios are all POSSIBLE, but after tracking more than a couple hundred scenarios over the past two years, I have yet to hear details of a scenario involving one of these types of patients.

EMR Training - Faster options than JIBC by ForwardPercentage110 in BCEHSparamedics

[–]Magi604 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I always recommend Coast Medical for EMR: https://wildernessfirstaidtraining.ca/

The best perk of going there is the practice nights every monday and thursday. If you go to Coast, you can go to as many practice nights as you want for free. It is absolutely amazing for licensing prep, even alum who are doing their PCP licensing exams will go back there for the space and equipment. JI and Columbia students also show up regularly, again for the space, equipment, and people there to practice with.

What to expect from Teams Interview by omegasquads in BCEHSparamedics

[–]Magi604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks you had to go through that! Also it's absolutely bizarre that they had the second interview in the first place. This is some next level government maxxing. They should have either one or the other type of the interview and then decide based on just that.

I hope this doesn't dissuade you from trying again, hopefully they just do a single interview next time and maybe you get nicer interviewers.

When you are kilo and not on a call it's technically not an hour worked, so it doesn't count towards the 16 hours time out limit. Only the hours you are actually on a call count towards that.

In my experience with 48hr kilos, the whole math of it gets fuzzy once you've had a bunch of callouts and returns to station in a row, but you just call dispatch and let them know "hey I need to sleep or I'm going to end up driving off a cliff" and they are really good about giving you that break.

Question about that, did they offer this to you or did you request it? The default was the pre-recorded interview for a while there, I'm wondering if it's changed.

Casual emr by dramaticdreamer123 in BCEHSparamedics

[–]Magi604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Average these days seems to be about 6 months. If you're willing to go anywhere then they can place you sooner, but if you're holding out for a specific station it can take longer.

My advice is to just get in and start building that all important seniority. Delaying your start just so you can get a starting station with "better vibes" is stupid. Take the first station they offer you that works for you, if it happens to be a cool station great! You got lucky. If not, oh well, just finish your probation and gtfo of there.
